    The filter thread is 77mm

That just about clears it up for me. There is no way I will buy a normal prime with that big a filter thread.

Even my 50/1.2 AiS has only a 52mm filter thread.

the MTF chart looks really good!!
it surely much better than Nikon 50/1.4 Af-D which i sold it a year ago...
I only used Nikon 50/1.4 AF-D for 3 months, during that period, I never been happy with it performance.
Now I'm waiting for the new Nikon 50/1.4 or 1.2 AF-S Nano Coating + the new Nikon 85/1.4 or 1.2 AF-S Nano Coating

The large front thread seems to be a good thing... this lens has been designed for uniform lightness and uniform bokeh wide open - something hard to find find in a f/1.4 (or f/1.2) lens with a 52 or 58 mm front thread.

This is a very interesting addition to the market - modern optical design with fewer compromises than the competition.

The question mark that remains for me is build quality - with such a heavy optical assembly, how well will it take a beating in the field? Smaller designs like the 50/1.8 AiS are almost indestructible, this Sigma is heavier than the Nikkor 85/1.4D and has a plastic barrel.

Looks very nice once down a stop or so. Be interesting to see what the sample variation, and as Lars mentioned, the build quality is like.

    Re: Sigma 50mm f1.4 review

I was looking at this review, but I agree with Vivek -- 77mm for a 50/1.4 is pretty unacceptable. I use the 50/1.4 AF and it is passable. But looking at the sigma review it seems like all that glass does not really give you all that much performance. It's certainly good for 500 dollars, but 1% barrel distortion on full frame, chromatic aberration, very large size and double the cost of the manufacturer's lenses does not seem to me to be a recipe for success. It really makes me miss the 50mm f/1.4 Summilux E60 that I was using in the R system. Using Nikon really makes you appreciate those R lenses...too bad they can't deliver the whole package like Nikon can (full frame, fantastic pro body, af etc etc). I hope Nikon just updates their primes like many have been predicting. They know how to make a killer 50/1.4 (look at the S3 2000), so let's hope they just do it in F mount with an AFS motor.

    Re: Sigma 50mm f1.4 review

Both the Canon and Nikon 50/1.4 lenses have much better performance across the frame beyond f/4. The Sigma is a promising specialist lens, but it would seem not to be a great general use 50.
