Nikon D800/E Diffraction Limits

Hello :

Has anyone had the opportunity to test the D800/E for diffraction limits - At which f-stop does it begin to show in the images ?

Thanks,

Jai

You'll need to go to diglloyd.com for the answers: he has run tests. From my experience, stay at f4 or 5.6 depending on lens, focal length, distance to subject etc but go to f8 if your lens is only sharp at the corners there or if you need the DOF.

but for a perfectly focussed very good lens on centre, f4.

Thanks tashley -

Shooting architecture does require me to shoot at f/11 at times, but f/8 certainly 90% of the times - Seems like for these applications, the D800 will not be too advantageous.

At fairly normal viewing distances, you should be able to stop down to f/11 with no issues. You will find f/16 very usable as well. F/22 will be tougher, but with sharpening, you should be able to get nice results.

The limits to diffraction are based on format, not pixel pitch. Making the "perfect" image at 100% monitor view is a bit pointless. Also, if your images are acceptable now with a lower resolution sensor, how is dividing it into more pixels going to make it less sharp?

It will be less advantageous than at wider apertures, but you'll still get more detail than for example a 18MP camera at f/11. You just won't be able to get the full amount that the MP difference suggests.
