I was able to snag one of these lenses at my local dealer and it is a stunning lens for portraits...

Well. FWIW I got my copy on Monday and yesterday it went back. Sharpness OK in the center but falling off towards the edges, slightly worse on the left hand side. Had to stop down to f8 for reasonable sharpness across the field. This at long distance. Marginally better at close range. Surprisingly easy to nail focus on the D800E.
Hopefully a bad sample, next shipment to arrive in 3-4 weeks.

A short update: Got my second copy last week. Unfortunately much of the same, but worse on the right-hand side this time. Considerable COF turning towards the camera near the edge. When focusing with liveview on the right edge it gets better (than focusing in the center) but not really sharp.
What's going on at Zeiss? My 100mm Makro Planar is superb across the field and now this.
I'm giving up on this lens at least for the time beeing.
