Buffer and SDHC, SDXC or compact flash

I get annoyed when I can only get 7 shots on the Leica M9 before the buffer fills and then get a picture about every 2 seconds thereafter.

With a D800, is there such a limit when shooting FX at the top rate of 4 FPS? If so, how many frames can one get before the camera freezes?

Also, given the options for SDHC, SDXC or CF, which type of cards and what specs (write speeds) would you need on these cards to maximize transfer rate?
