Re: Digital Nikon with manual lenses

Like the last few photos you posted quite a lot, Jorgen. :-)

I don't have a digital Nikon body, but I'm enjoying the F6 quite a lot. I just added the Nikon 180/2.8 ED-IF AF to my equipment closet.. fourth time I've bought a Nikon 180/2.8, first time one that incorporated AF. I think that's going to be it - lens choices from 18mm to 180mm is already a bit more than I usually want or need. Now maybe, some day, I'll add a Nikon DSLR body.

Re: Digital Nikon with manual lenses

Thank you Godfrey. At the moment, I'm extremely satisfied with what I can get out of the D810, particularly after I started shooting using the "flat" picture profile, which gives files similar to what I used to get from my old Fuji cameras; subdued colours that I can shape as I will, and tons of DR. Good lenses help too, and rumours have it that a 180mm f/2.8 AF is waiting for me in Bangkok

    Nice work Jørgen

    You'll love the 180mm f2.8 - it was a great lens!

Here's a lens that keeps impressing me, the 28mm f/2.0 AiS. For images like this, I obviously stop it down quite a bit, but when I do, it's extremely problem free, just a tiny bit of CA that is easily removed in ACR.

From my visit to Copenhagen earlier this year. I don't know if this is taken with the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 that I borrowed from Steen at the time or the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 that I ended up buying from him, but I do know that it's taken at f/4 with the D810

Re: Digital Nikon with manual lenses

    Two questions.

    1) Anyone tried the Voightlander 40 f2 pancake lens on a Nikon DSLR for travel or walk around?

    2) Possible to mod a Leica R lens for use on a Nikon DSLR? If so, any reason to do so... or not to do so? I have a 50 Sumacron sitting around and an 810 w/o a 50.

There are two R lenses out there i converted to F. 50 'cron and 28 Elmarit VII. Both very nice lenses on a Nikon body--I used them on a F3 for about a year or so. Played with them on a D700 but I didn't care for the rangefinder dot.

Adapted lenses on SLRs give up too much in convenience/ergonomics for me, most of the time, but if I'm going to be working mostly wide open or near that, and a particular lens has a nice signature, it's worth adapting. The first generation Summicron-R 50mm is like that.

Thank you, I try my best. We have so much to learn from kids, their limitless ideas and their lack of prejudice. Communicating with them at their level is truly inspirational.

    Nikon D750 + Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AI-S
    ISO 560 @ f/1.2 @ 1/50

More an equipment familiarization shot than anything else, but it sure is nice to see how well these older Nikkors work on a current DSLR. :-)

I think I've located and set up about 80% of what I need to simplify operating this starship down to my paddleboat captain's mind.

Re: Digital Nikon with manual lenses

The D750 saw business use today to capture a HUGE whiteboard with a massive system design prototype layout on it. The space was quite limited and lighting awful, so I used the Nikkor 18/3.5 AI-S, tripod, bubble level, etc to make two exposures that could be composited into a three page wide paper print. It came out very nicely, even small hand-written bits on edges and in corners are readable.

Sorry I can't share the image, but the Nikkor 18mm gets a new level of my respect from this performance.

Re: Digital Nikon with manual lenses

This thread is resonating with me as I really miss the feel of the good manual focus lenses from the past... and the clear/bright viewfinders.

I do have a couple questions though.

First, did/do you find it difficult to get good consistent focus with the manuals on the DSLR viewfinders?

Second, did any of you fit a split image screen to your viewfinders to aid in hitting focus?

The D750 standard focusing screen is good enough for me to focus even an 18/3.5 cleanly, and its focus indicator is very accurate too. For absolutely critical focus, the LCD and magnification works very well indeed.

No need for a split image screen.. I put one in the F6 and found I hardly need it even there. The focus indicator is that good!

    Thanks Godfrey

Exactly what I wanted to know. Have a Nikon 85 1.4G and looking for a 50. Sounds like the Nikon 50s are just adequate so interested in both the 50 1.2 and Sigma Art. Would only choose one. Had read that manual focus lenses weren't that easy to focus on DSLR's. Wanted some input from real users. Thanks

Thanks
I have both the Nikkor 50/1.2 AI-S and the 50/1.8G AF-S. The former has lovely bokeh and works a treat. The latter is remarkably good for an inexpensive lens ... Here are four photos made with the 50/1.8G:

It may not be a Summilux, but it's no slouch! and only $190 when I purchased it.

    Here's the Nikkor 50/1.2 AI-S, wide open:

A rather different imaging signature and also quite nice, IMO.

Re: Digital Nikon with manual lenses

I rarely have any focusing problems with the manual lenses, and when I have, I remind myself that AF isn't always a perfect solution either. Often, manual focusing is faster and more reliable.

My first test shots after my new 55mm was delivered at work. It was not a productive Friday afternoon

I purchased Nikkor 3.5/28 in the seventies, sold it about 5 years ago and regretted it ever since, it was a very fine lens. Regards, Vlad.
