Nikon 1 AW1 Warning

My Nikon 1 AW1, like many others, developed a leak through the battery/card compartment. The sea water that got in created havoc. My lens and the camera lens throat were dry but circuitry near the battery was ruined. My dealer sent the body in for repair. Nikon repair said that "it was not economic" to repair the body. It is out of warranty. I then asked the dealer to order a new body, as I was willing to bite that bullet. The response from Nikon was that it will not sell bodies other than as part of the kit with the 11-27.5mm lens. I called Nikon customer service who confirmed this. No reason was supplied other than basically "that's the way we are selling them".

Because this is a camera sold as suitable for underwater use, which increases the risk of damage, this policy is highly consumer unfriendly and anyone considering this camera might want to think twice because if and when the body goes, you are not going to be able to get another from Nikon without also springing for another lens you don't need.

I'm not going to address the issue of the apparent weakness of the seals at the battery door. The leak could have been user error. But to strand users like Nikon has done by refusing to sell a replacement body is wrong. Hence, the warning.
