Glad you didn't stop posting Jorgen, this is a very powerful image, tells a lot about society, life and role of women there.

Happy that you like this one, David. While most motives just pop up in front of me, this one is a result of concentration and effort (and a lens that wasn't really up to it).

It's difficult to live in Asia as a Westerner without developing a changing view on people's value in society. If I could afford the time needed, that would be an obvious book project. Showing the dramatic social relations without the need for exposing the obvious cases like beggars, drug addicts and prostitutes (that we have in the west anyway, very much for the same reasons as in this part of the world), would give a window into this world that is hardly ever obvious to visitors.

    Oh well.... dreams, dreams

Kind of you to say so, Jorgen. My site is in much need of attention. I need to get to work on it and upload more work. I have some Thai images on flickr too, but have not been good about maintaining things there.

Perhaps we'll meet for a coffee in BKK or elsewhere one day.

Long story short... I was waiting for an unobstructed view to the main gate of Temple of Literature in the nice evening sun. On a Friday. Foolish attempt of course.

As always great stuff. I love the badminton photo as it reminds me of a Tai Chi pose!

    Thanks Woody.

Interesting comment about badminton and Tai Chi, since that's exactly what I think when I walk around in Hanoi early in the morning. There are lots of badminton players everywhere in streets and parks every morning. It's an interesting study in a combination of sports and Asian philosophy.

An amazing series Jorgen, and one that spoke to me deeply on a number of levels. I've never had this sort of view of Hanoi (I supposed I didn't really have any sort of positive idea about it), and it was very enlightening to me. Vietnam is part of a very painful past to me (I've been aware of this thread since it started, but couldn't bring myself to even open it), and one that some friends have encouraged me to exorcize with a visit, as some of them have done. I think sometimes that I'd like to do so, and these images certainly push me that way, but more than likely it won't happen any time soon (particularly with economic realities being what they are), so to visit vicariously though your wonderful images is a reasonable (and really quite wonderful and therapeutic) substitute. And, on top of the psychological benefits, I've been treated to some truly wonderful and inspiring photography. Thank you.

Re: Hanoi, Friday 13 February 2009

Klaus and Lloyd, thank you both.

Lloyd, Vietnam represents a painful past to many, including a lot of Vietnamese. I can see that it's problematic for some, and understandably so. Going there is probably a good idea though. I see many American, and French, coming there, trying to see what the whole thing was all about.

So far, I've only been to the north, which, except for the climate, is wonderful. The south is apparently very different in many ways. I look forward to see all of it, but it's a surprisingly large country, and it will take time, at least as long as I have obligations in this country as well.

Again, I'm very happy that you enjoy the photos. Thank you

Re: Hanoi, Friday 13 February 2009

    Thank you, cmb.

Sometimes, often many times per day, I am stopped in the street by people who want me to take their photo or a photo of their children, not with their camera but with mine. Having ones portrait taken is sometimes more important than being able to view it afterwards. Here's one of those occasions, a southeast Asian teenager, as typical as you'll ever find one:

And since I'm in "typical mode" this morning, here's a very typical Hanoi backstreet, one of the best reasons for visiting this city.

Again, Jorgen, brilliant work. I'm touched and awed.

I'm also not the least surprised that the impacts of the past remain for the people there. I can hardly blame them, and didn't blame them even all those years ago. Thanks again for giving me this surprising, and quite wonderful window to a world I never imagined.

With all the traffic, pollution and noise, cities can sometimes appear greyish and dull. They aren't of course.

I've said this before about Jorgen, his work is very uplifting and somehow he manages to find the bright side of life. I spent 14 years living in the area and can tell you that a dark side exists, lots of poverty and squalor which many might dwell on and pick as subject matter. Over the years I've seen many images from different photographers who only show this darkness, Jorgen sees the light side and focuses on the good and the humorous, its a rare talent.

This is such a great moment. Love it... and the use of DoF (and the very clever copyright placement)

Wonderful photos. Makes me so jealous to know that you've seen more of the real VN than I have. I grew up in the South, but never had the chance to visit the North.
