    D500 announced

Impressive specs - this is pro level. 20.9 Mpx, 10 fps, insane buffer, weather sealing, no popup flash, ISO 51,200 extend to ISO 1.6M. On paper this seems like the camera I always wanted to abuse. Looking forward to previews/reviews.

I know I am an oddball thinker on this, but Dx format has never intrigued me. If I'm going to go smaller, then why not M4/3 instead?

Because a DSLR with an optical viewfinder is much better for sports photography and because this one is compatible with my other Nikon cameras. I am very tempted, and I haven't even read the specs yet

Saw the video. I'm sold! That's much more than anybody was hoping for. Looks like a totally amazing camera. Fantastic, Nikon!

And the D5 is off my shopping list. This and the D810 will be the perfect pair

    D500 announced

    optical viewfinder
    F mount
    1,5 crop factor
    pixel density
perceived reach with affordable Nikon F mount tele lenses

    I'd love to own one
unfortunately the prices are often much higher in my part of the world than in the US
    we'll see

    Re: D500 announced

They have also copied the viewfinder design from the larger cameras, which is great, the AF coverage is much better than before, at least left to right, and the buffer takes 79 uncompressed and 200 lossless compressed 14 bit RAW files!

    Re: D500 announced

    Now, this is interesting:
The body is actually slightly wider than the D810 (D500 left, D810 right in this image). Will they make an FX version, the same way as they did with the D300/D700?

Compared to the D810 (and most previous Nikon bodies), they have switched the ISO and Mode buttons. If I'm going to use these two cameras side-by-side, there will be some swearing every time I hit the wrong button, which I will. Frequently.

    This.

And I'm also considering the D500 added to D800E in my bag, seems like a perfect duo, except the swearing part.

add: xqd + sd on the D500...

    Re: D500 announced

I wanted something like that for Wildlife (the 7200 works so so for me). But I am a little underwhelmed about the 21MP which gives it a only slight advantage over the D810 in DX mode.

Maybe I wait for the D810 successor with higher MP count and better AF System … in DX mode, the cropping potential, buffer and frame rate should be sufficient for me and I have not to carry around 2 bodies, as I use FX quite a lot.

If you don't want to carry 2 bodies, keep the D810. The D810 replacement will probably have the same AF system as this one though.

I don't know what quickly means to you, but I got a new car over a month ago, and I'm still struggling to adapt. Imagine me then, when switching between cameras within seconds

Yes, I still use a Nokia phone running Symbian

It's for taking photos and video

    Edit:
Jokes aside, it's basically a D5 with a crop sensor for a third of the price. Due to the crop sensor, reach is increased by 1.5x. It's an ideal camera for sports/action/wildlife photographers on a budget and those who don't want to carry large, heavy, expensive telephoto lenses.

I want to carry large, expensive telephoto lenses. I just don't want to pay for them.

D400 / D500 -- I think this specific model deserves a more heroic name than just a few digits .-)

Jack, this camera is a heaven sent for wildlife photographers - where a DX body adds extra power to long telephoto lenses - and believe me - you simply never have enough reach - especially when chasing rare birds etc.

Having FX and DX in similar familiar Nikon dSLR layouts is really boon for such folks.

That said, after watching the Nikon video - this camera actually rocks...... good show NIKON

I'm guessing it's going to be an off year for FX. I'd love that new focus system in a D7xx style body. I'll probably have to wait until next year which is ok too, the 750 is working just fine.

    D500 announced

The price in Denmark is now revealed as 18,295 DKK which at the current exchange rate equals 2,635 USD.

In my country it's 1.7 times the price of an FX Nikon D610.

And it's 2.5 times the price of a DX Nikon D7200.

So, sorry Nikon, I'll have to give up the D300 successor despite how intriguing it would have been paired with an AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR.

Swissblad, you describe the sweet spot where I live most of the time. I have been waiting a long time for the D500. Read the specs closely it is a true pro camera and very close to the D5. You are correct. It's pairing with the D5 will be the pros tool kit for a long time.

One fine point. The D500 will have the backlit buttons of the D4/5. I know many will shrug, but it is one of those things you don't know you want until you use them. A very nice touch.

The D500 (and the D5) look about as good as they could be as upgrades for the Nikon shooters. I'm so glad the Nikon shooters weren't moaning and groaning about this MP's too and have embraced the cameras and it's many features. I thought it was going to be yet another 24MP camera, and 20MP is what I was hoping for persinally. Now to start saving.

Unfortunately, prices in Europe are often inflated for a variety of reasons, including exchange rates. The current price in the US (pre-order @ B&H) is $1,996.95 USD.

I missed the backlit buttons - great - this little camera is becoming more appealing by the second.

Travel a few km's south - it will be much cheaper in Germany, and even CH will have reasonable prices.

Plus, you can even take pix on the trip back!

    Now, this is silly:
According to Nikon's website, their WiFi applications for the D500 will only be compatible with iOS and Android devices. However, the only tablet computers that can run Photoshop and other advanced photo editing software are those that feature Windows, like the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 4. Why didn't you think about that, Mr. Nikon?

You can run a special photoshop on the new iPad Pro at least, but not sure about the other iPads ....

    Maybe support will come (hopefully)

Anyway I am not so keen about editing on any type of tablet, but maybe that's only me.

    Re: D500 announced

I think the purpose of this camera is pretty clear: its a 7D II competitor and we know the 7D II is a very popular second body to the 1DX or sole body for some sports and wildlife shooters.

By appearing to provide all the goodies of the 7D II in a body with a sensor that will have vastly better dynamic range and file elasticity, I think Nikon has a winner here. Yes, we know it is leapfrog here, but it took Canon 5 years to update the 7D to Mk II status, so unless there is a quick overhaul with new sensor tech by Canon, 7D II users have 3-5 years before they can get improved dynamic range.

The 1DX II and 5D IV (or whatever its called) really need to deliver a clear leap in sensor performance over existing Canons, because Nikon has eaten away at pretty well all of Canon's other USPs over the last few years.

Anyway I am not so keen about editing on any type of tablet, but maybe that's only me.
I won't edit using a tablet computer on a regular basis either, but sometimes, also when travelling light, it's needed. The iPad Pro also has the disadvantage of lacking a slot for a Micro SD-card and a full size USB port (No, I don't want to pay for and carry an assortment of adapters to make the thing work. This is year 2016 after all.), which makes it much less practical to use. Then it's the price: the top iPad Pro is 50% more expensive than the corresponding Surface 3, in spite of lacking all those practical features. The Retina screen is nice of course, but that's about it for me.

I thought it was going to be yet another 24MP camera, and 20MP is what I was hoping for persinally. Now to start saving.

Hi Nik (nikt), nice to see you here on GetDPI as well

I assume you are the very same member nikt from Australia who in 2005 started the longest going thread ever on the Nikon board of the FM forum:

    http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/546418

    In any case, welcome aboard

Happy to see you here too, Nikt. Hope you have an enjoyable time here too

Ummm... not to be nitpicking, but the longest thread on FM must be "Mustang Air to Air, The Sequel", started by Jim Wilson, 94,100 posts and counting:

    http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/600984

I guess we aren't supposed to do advertising for other forums here, but FM is so well known by most here anyway. Hope it's OK. Please remove if it's not.

    Pedant Alert:

Yeah well, but Nik started "Your Best Nikon shots" back in 2005. Still running.

The "Mustang Air to Air: The Sequel" is not ten years old yet (and not quite a Nikon board thread), but you are right it has an absolutely impressive amount of posts

Anyway, sorry for the digression about the old days on another forum

    Cheers.

The D500 has me clamouring for info. I'm hoping to get to my hands on the pre-release model. Fun

    Correction

    Correction:
Apparently I was wrong about the start date of the above mentioned "Best Nikon shots" thread, the thread was from June 2007.
I.e. only half a year older than the "Mustang Air to Air" thread from December 2007, that Jorgen mentioned in his above post.
Thank you for the correction, Nik
And sorry for the confusion, Jorgen and all

In any case, both threads are well worth looking at, but that goes for the fantastic image threads on this forum as well... particularly the image threads on this forum. That's one of the good reasons why this is my "home forum".

This D500 looks good, very good. It is too bad I'm portraitist and need large sensor areas so I'm frustrated. I really hope a D700 like camera later, it would please me a lot. Why not without 4K video but only simple HD ? Or a Df2 with 1/8000 and FF AF ?...

Here is a little 4K video out of the D500 :

The D500 must be a dream camera, especially for wildlife and sports.

My main problem is that there are currently lot of great choices popping up to cover this, like the new Fuji XPro2 and 100-400 (150-600 equivalent) as well as the new PanaLeica 100-400 (200 - 800 equivalent).

But maybe just staying in my Nikon ecosystem would be the easiest and best choice

I was about to speak about the X-"pro"2 but stopped because AF will not even come close. I had the XT-1 and, while it is good, it is one parsec away from my D700 AF. So yes, price wise, the Xpro2 is good. But performance wise the Nikon just kill it.

To me, the D500 looks a bit like a Swiss Army Knife where each tool works almost as well as a full size, professional version

If I can't get it within three weeks, I don't really need it this side of the summer. Still, I have a feeling that it will be hard to resist.

I had the XPro1 and AF was so bad, that I sold it. Same for the XT1, where AF was better, but still ....

The XPro2 should have much improved AF though - 77 PDAF points and wide spread, work down to -3EV - that should say something. I need to try one, but have high hopes it would be pretty close to D500. If not it rules itself out in a second - at least for me.

I also need to see the D500 OVF before final decision, as this should have 1.0 magnification, the largest for any APSC camera. Maybe this one is also hard to top, even by an excellent EVF as in the XT1. And the XPro2 EVF is rumored to have less magnification, actually as the old XPro1, which per se would not rule the XPro2 out for me.

But anyway I need and will test this personally before making any decision.

The D500, while not as small as the XPro2 is still pretty compact and if AF and OVF are just so much better, my decision would be easy and clear.
