Re: Any Nikon 200-400 great shots?

Sorry for not responding earlier. This is a great lens, and for me its weakness lies in its greatness. I mainly shoot urban scenes or travel documentary, and rarely carry this behemoth with me. But I agree that it is a joy to use. Let me post a few examples dating from last August. It was a beautiful late afternoon and I was positioned in Arnavutköy, the narrowest part of the Bosporus, shooting the loneliness in the faces of the seamen in the passing ships.

ah, those are wonderful. very nice colors and composition--it looks like they have tough life. i use mine 90% of the time and only rarely get to use my other lenses, so have become accustomed to the weight. does it attract a lot of attention walking around with it??

    thanks for posting!

    jack

i do boring sports stuff, so didn't want to waste anyone's time...not too artsy. just want to see more creative uses of this great optic. here are a few of mine from the last month. i think all were done with the 200-400

Being a shy character, I am sometimes overwhelmed by the attention I get when using this lens. I must admit that I did not use it since August, and my purchase of the Leica M system in September may well be one of the reasons; I never get noticed with an M8 camera.
By the way, thank you for your compliments, I would love to see some of your shots with this baby.
    Best,

here's another 200-400 from saturday. also shot the lens yesterday for some international gold cup (soccer) matches--works pretty good. wish it focused quicker but good enough as is, especially in day light.

here is a night time shot with the 200-400 from the other night. i am amazed that this thing works so well in low light. focuses great for a 4.0 and i rarely get out of focus action shots. sometimes i use the active VR.

Some really great moments there. Remind me not to become a football player, will you? Maybe I should stay away from baseball as well.

Lloyd, I think I've seen and commented on that flower shot before, but the colours and composition deserves at least two more thumbs up

    Hello fultonpics,
This digital image is fantastic. The ball sits still in the air like a magic. The player who reached the base has a lucky number on his uniform -- "77". Cheers! Leica 77

The shots with this lens are very impressive. I'm curious whether the sports shots were zoomed in all the way to 400mm or whether 300mm would have been adequate for most of them.

Can't speak to the Pro sports shots, but I use mine zoomed at various focal lengths. This one is at 200, and I really needed to be able to pull back even more.

Re: Any Nikon 200-400 great shots?

    Hello,

Long time lurker here. Time to jump in, as the 200-400 was one of my main reasons for buying a Nikon camera.

I do a lot of photography from a kayak, and the distance to the subject can be very variable. With the Nikon D3x and the 200-400 I've got 200-400 covered in FX mode, and then with one button I'm at 300-600 in DX mode. For me this is just the best.

Anyway, here's one from last weekend, a common loon taking off at sunrise. They run on the water a while before getting airborn.

D3x, 200-400, iso 800, f/4, 1/640, pattern metering, -1/3ev, handheld (on the kayak) at 260mm in FX mode.

hey that is a great shot. the idea of shooting from a kayak is kinda of cool. i'd love to do mavericks that way, but getting out there might put the gear in danger. so you hand hold it? gets heavy doesn't it?

    Hello Steve Fines,
It is a very fine image. The loon is a state bird of Minnesota. The way they run on the water is quite unique before their "take off". I can hear their distinct call in your image. Best wishes, Leica 77

Re: Any Nikon 200-400 great shots?

i was using the 200-400 in virtual darkness tonight in Oakland. i was surprised how my images came out great. helps to have the D3's high ISO performance. i rarely miss the the 400 2.8 these days. i find the zoom more than makes up for the loss in light.

btw, mine sits on a nice gitzo carbon monopod all the time. no silly head--just screwed in directly to the pod. you can strap the gitzo on to the side of the 200-400 case and you are good to go. i do this when i go over to stanford--i just walk from the house with one body hanging off on shoulder and the 200-400 case on the other. beats traffic.

was sitting in the dugout two days ago shooting the reds v giants game. all four shooters had the 200-400 on their camera's. most of these guys were using primes a year ago.

it has sort of become the 'standard' for sports shooters at this point. you couldn't even get one during the olympics as nikon had them all headed to beijing. its amazing how this lens has changed the game. still guys out there with their canon gear, but more and more nikon everyday.

Re: Any Nikon 200-400 great shots?

I posted this on the Fun Nikon pix thread, but since it's with the 200-400, I'll include it here.

This is from yesterday's Stage One of the Tour of Utah. Oscar Sevilla and Francisco Mancebo of Rock Racing consolidate their lead with about one kilometer to go on the hot and windy final climb of the day. Once over the top, they held on for the final 15km to the finish, crossing the line together just 25 seconds ahead of the main peleton. Mancebo was awarded the stage victory.

I have been curious about this lens for my stage work. I currently use a 70-200 f/2.8 which sharp enough to shave a cat, but was looking for something longer. How would this compare the 70-200 + 1.4TC? I know lens would be a tad longer 400mm vs 280mm, but what about low light performance?

you might try using the 70-200 with 1.4 to see if you can 'live' with the low light and the focus performance at f 4.0. obviously, the 200-400 is great for daylight use, however it requires more skill to shoot it in low light if you are covering moving objects. i shot it on saturday night for a nationally ranked football team in a stadium with very poor lights (portable 4 towers for an 75,000 seat venue). most of us using that lens were at iso 3200 up to iso 5000. i had to use every trick i could remember to get good clean shots at 4.0. we need speeds of at least 1/320 for a running back if he is coming at you and faster for passing shots. i got the images, but man i could have sure used a 400 2.8. it focused ok, but not great on those long passing shots that i think a 2.8 would have locked on. i'll post a few examples later. i had at least 50 shots good enough for my agency.

if you can rent the lens, please do and see it it works for you. if it doesn't, the 300 2.8 is stellar. i know quite a few guys that use the 200 2.0 with the tele extender--kinda of best of both worlds. if you need the length, then it is a 400.
