Thanks Corlan and Steve. No, not Mimi. Although in past years she has raced here (and won), this year she was actually helping me photograph the event. I'll post a couple of her shots later.

Not the best light for a morning trip to the Bryce Canyon rim, overcast with occasional sun, but still ok. This shot from Sunset Point.

This certainly can't compete with Bryce Canyon, but we still have lots of left over snow here

Nice snowman. Nice shots. What's funny is that in the Salt Lake area we have no snow left at all. Just 20 minutes from me (at Alta) they have a 90+ base, and more on the way over the next three days. We just have rain (not that I mind!).

    Nice shots, Lloyd.
How was the drive up there?

Went there last time in Jan 03 just after a snow storm, took a all day round trip from our base camp normally a couple of hours away. Got stuck a couple of times on the way, quite an experience and beautiful sight -we were well alone all the time- but a tough one nevertheless. Hope yours was easier

Ok, last one of these for now. Like I've said, I'm not really a fan of HDR, but decided to try a "Single-image HDR" here. Not too bad, I guess.

Re: Even More Fun Pictures with Nikon

Yes, lovely work Lloyd! The colors in the canyon are amazing.

We had one of the biggest auroras I have ever seen two nights ago. I had a feeling it might be big, since it had been active for the last few nights -- the weather looked like it would be good, so I drove out of town and made a night of it. I am very glad I did.
There are too many photos to post here, and it is a flash site, so I cannot hotlink the images, but here is a link to a number of photos:

    http://www.stuartrichardson.com/ligh...s-aurora-2-10/

    They were all taken with a D3 and either a 50mm f/1.4 Summilux R or a 17-35 f/2.8

Re: Even More Fun Pictures with Nikon

I just watched the slideshow, Stuart. Completely fantastic aurora series.
I have never seen the phenomenon in real life but I believe this series makes a great illustration of what it's actually like.
You can almost sense the aurora curtains waving back and forth.

Lloyd, your Bryce Canyon pictures are so beautiful ! I think I prefer the good old natural post processed version.

    Scott. Fun snowman shots
It is still snowing here in Denmark. Luckily we are less than two weeks from the first formal date of spring ...
    Here's my illustration, a snowwoman.

Stuart! WOW! Those aurora pictures are stunning! Thanks for sharing!

This far south in Norway we rarely see the aurora borealis, and never in those dimensions.

Thank you Osman, Stuart and Steen. Much appreciated.

I agree with Leif, those aurora images are beautiful. My wife and I watched the slideshow several times through while having breakfast this morning.

Steen, my wife remarked how she's glad she's not that statue... some "parts" just don't take to being covered with snow!

Re: Even More Fun Pictures with Nikon

Thank you both! It was a pretty spectacular night. I also did a 20 minute large format exposure and a couple of shorter 35mm exposures on fuji acros...these probably will not show the aurora, but I am still interested to see what if anything they show. It was a beautiful night, though it was -9C on the glacier...and windy. Down in the valley it was a balmy -5, but calm. For the 20 minute exposure I was actually lying in the grass just watching the stars and the last bits of the aurora. It was an amazing night.

And Steen, I love that shot of the statue. Something tells me she is regretting her choice to go topless on such a cold day.

Thank you Stuart. The aurora is something we've seen a couple of times, but when we did it was not nearly so spectacular. Would love to see it from your latitude sometime. Thanks for sharing.

Stuart - here we seized the opportunity of your splendid slideshow to show in details and explain to the girls what an aurora was. Terrific night you had there, and great job

Lloyd - fwiw despite the effort the HDR doesn't work for me and can't really get how it'd improve the series. But obvously like other techniques such as IR, texture blending etc. the perception is quite depedant on the beholder.

Steen - no further comment. Ah well, maybe one question: did you try shoot the same with the focus on the main subject?

Seen in Utah? What color was it? The only time that I have seen aurora was one night in the Tetons; the curtains of light were dark red. I had assumed that this color was due to refraction in the atmosphere at lower latitudes as compared to the fantastic greens seen in Stuart's wonderful photos.

Never seen it here in Utah myself, although I understand it has been. We saw it in central Alberta, Canada.

Thanks! I have a lot to catch up on! I love seeing all the shots everyone posts.

I probably took 85% of the shots with my CZ 21 2.8 at a hyperfocal distance. This is a totally new kind of shooting for me, so be kind :-D There are times I reallllyyyyy wished I had an M9 w/ a 28mm and a silent shutter tho. I'm really looking forward to compiling a nice lil collection out of this trip.
