Just got an DP1M for testing. I'm very impressed by the level of detail this small devil can catch :-) In this area it outperforms my 5D MkII with TS-E 24mm II easily while I'm not so happy with color rendering.

I'm not surprised it outperformed your Mk II.

Only one it won't is the 800e.

    beautiful shot.

    Where was it taken ?

    Forgot to ask.

What was your color setting ?

    i.e. Neutral, Standard, etc.

Not sure what your concern on the color rendering is ?

Too much. too little ? Unnatural looking ?

I happen to like the way the photo looks but I didn't take it.

I happen to like the way the photo looks but I didn't take it.

I set "Standard" in camera, but in SPP I changed to "Landscape", because I liked the colors more. WB was set to sunlight and I didn't change that in SPP.
I made the same picture with the 5D.
In the DP1M files had a green color cast in the foreground which I tried to get rid of with SPP, which was not really possible. I converted the file in a .tiff and made local color corrections in Lightroom and Photoshop.
The image from the 5D processed with Lightroom doesn't have this color cast.
If you are interested, here is the 5D-Version:
    Old hut in morning light

I must admit that the color cast was very slightly, but it was there. I suppose I'm not experienced enough with SPP to get colors correct .

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Thanks Ute,

My in-camera color setting was "Standard", but I changed in SPP to "Landscape" because I liked the overall color more. WB was set to Sunlight, I didn't change that.
The image showed a slight green color cast in the foreground which looked a bit unnatural. I tried to get rid of it using the color adjustment wheel in SPP, but I was not successful. So I converted to .tiff and made local color corrections in Lightroom and PS.
I made the same picture with the 5D and opened it in Lightroom. This picture shows no color cast. If you are interested here is the "Canon"-Version of the picture:
    Old hut in morning light

I must mention that the color cast was very slightly, but it was there. I suppose I'm not that experienced with SPP as I'm with Lightroom .

    Thanks,
    Chris

My color setting in camera was "Standard". I changed it to "Landscape" afterwards in SPP, because I liked the colors more. I had a green color cast in the foreground, which I couldn't get rid of with the color adjustment wheel in SPP. So I exported a .tiff file and made local color corrections in Lightroom/Photoshop.

I photographed the same scene with the 5D and developed the picture in Lightroom. There I had never had this green color cast. I must admit the color cast was slightly, but it was there. I suppose I'm not as experiences using SPP

If you are interested, I posted the picture from the 5D on my blog (link in signature).

    Thanks,

A number of people have reported the green color phenomenon although I have never experienced it myself.

As you pointed out I was told it can easily be removed in lightroom, etc.
    so it's no big deal.

If that was your only concern then it doesn't sound like much of a problem.

The resolution and micro detail from these cameras is outstanding especially when you consider their weight/price.

If you use them within their window of operation they are very difficult to outperform.

Only a Nikon D800 will match or exceed.

if you want over the top type color try the foveon blue setting.

You never answered my other question.

Very lovely shot. Both the Sigma DP1M and the 5D shot are very good. The 5D does not appear to have blown the highlights as much as the Sigma but I suspect if you lowered the exposure in SPP and boosted with fill light you might match the 5D. One thing which sways me at my age in favour of the DP1M is not having to lug the 5D up the side of the mountain!

I'm sorry, I answered your question in the first of my posts. But due the link to my blog posted there, it needed a moderator to verify it. But after 2 days I thought the post will never show up and I made a new one without the link. And here I have forgotten to write the location.

As mezzoduomo mentioned it was in Austria, near the city of Innsbruck.

Next time I will know it better

Thanks for your detail answer. You're right, the slight color cast is a minor problem. The colors differ a bit from what I get from the 5D. But it's hard to say which way is the better one

    Thanks,
    Chris

Thanks Louis, you nailed it. It's the weight of a FF Camera and the other equipment that made me think of a one (or two) of the small Sigma DPm's.
To be honest I hover between a Fuji X-E1 and the Sigma DP1m. While image quality is clear better on the Sigma, overall performance is better on the Fuji.
Especially long exposures >30sec. and the bad battery life are the shortcomings of the Sigma.

Wonderful shot, Chris! Green color cast is something Sigma has to tweak to get rid of. 5D gets a win for color from foreground to the far end, DP - for detail.

    Re: DP Merrill color Landscapes

I think we all can agree that you need to use the Merrills within their "operating window"
to get the most of them.

They are not a good low light camera for example.

That is where a camera like the Mk II would easily outpeform a DP.

That said, IMO you cannot add resolving power. You can much more easily adjust color and saturation.

With that in mind, I have to say the DP's are the superior camera especially when weight and cost are taken into account.

The DP2 is better than the DP1 IMO.

    Sharp corner to corner.

I love using these cameras. They make taking great shots so much easier.

Same waterfall, different angle. Believe it or not, taken back on January 13th. Shot with a DP2M....I think with just a circular polarizer.

You're near Yosemite and I'm near Zion.

We're both pretty lucky I'd say.

On the one shot with the DP1M, it looks like I goofed editing on my laptop, hard to get the correct viewing angle. Here is what it should look like.

I have 2 questions for anyone who might know the answers :

I seem to be almost out of space to post photos on here. Is there a limit ? And if so, can it be enlarged ?

Are we allowed to post our personal Gallery links here ?

    Thanks in advance.

A panorama from an overnight trip in the Stubai mountains (Tyrol, Austria). The picture was made from 8 frames out of a DP1m and stitched together with PTGui. This artificial lake is called "Finstertaler Stausee" located near Kühtai.

My first time shooting a Merrill; definitely a learning curve in the sun!
I ordered a viewfinder today for quick compositions in the sun and will shoot mostly on a tripod. Ordered the lens hood as well.
I have been looking to get into a smaller line of cameras as I shoot MF and tire of all the bulk.
I sure do hope Sigma comes out with a bigger Foveon sensor in the future.
I bought the DP1 used after I rented it as a teaser.

I don't think you are going to be disappointed.

As long as you use it within it's operating window and don't try to make it into something it's not.

    Happy shooting.

Although I have the '2' and the '3' I'm finding I use the '3' for landscapes most, something a little more pleasing about the perspective it gives and if I want a wider angle of view then theres always PT Gui... Heres a couple from this weekend, the end of the monsoon here in Mumbai providing some nice moody skies.... Both DP3M.

I really like the pictures that have been posted in this thread and want to thank all the people who have taken the time to post. I've learned a lot from them and it helped convince me into buying one. Here's a shot from a few weeks ago.

The composition from both is very pleasing.
Though they are different elements within the frame, yet it conveys a sense of simplicity in those shots.

Last weekend I visited my "backyard" mountain, the Roßkogel. I had my new companions, the DP1m and the DP3m, with me and had a lot of fun. Especially the autumn colors where stunning.
The picture was made with the DP1m, processed with SPP and post-processed with Lightroom/Photoshop.
While it was pure fun to use the DPm's I had again some weird green color cast in the sky. I got rid of it in post-processing, but it wasn't that easy. I suppose the polarizer and ND grad filter, which I used together, intensified this effect.

    Thank you The Ute.
Here another one from a lake called "Kogelsee" in the "Lechtaler Alpen" (Tirol, Austria).

Again shot with the Sigma Dp1m in combination with a polarizer and a ND-grad-filter and 3 frames for dynamic range.

The monsoon is now pretty much over in Mumbai and I'm heading to the South of France for a month and so anticipate some nice autumn colour landscapes with my DP's, and a rather different vibe! Anyway, heres a couple from just post monsoon Maharashtra:
