Did anyone notice that SPP since v.5.5.2 produces less detailed monochrome images than prior versions? Before 5.5.2 I didn't notice that, but now color TIFFs converted in LR to B&W look way better.

I have only used version 5.5.2. I tend to like the B&W from SPP better, but no matter what, I always bring images into LR for further tweaking.

It seems appropriate that dead trees are shot in B+W. A touch of grain, not too rough, in SPP. I really like the B+W results that you can get out of SPP without too much effort.
