    Fun with the Pentax K-01

Henry's have just got these in Canada, I have a black one. I love it.

Re: Fun with the Pentax K-01

I've just discovered something that surprised me about the K-01. There is a shutter in front of the sensor, like in the Ricoh M-mount. My M4/3 and Nex cameras have exposed sensors when the lens is removed. I think this is a real advantage for the K-01

Re: Fun with the Pentax K-01

The K-01 is indeed a very underrated camera. The IQ is better than a few cameras above it and it has excellent manual focus peaking/manual focusing (better than the Nex 7 when I tried it).

My only bigger concern with it is that I wish the RAW shooting/buffering was quicker.

I love the design and it was this article that made me get the K-01

The Online Photographer: Out and About with the Pentax K-01

I got a couple of the limited primes with it. It feels good to handle and it is built with Leica like quality. Like it so much I have ordered a K5. Need to go back to my K10 days again.

The K-01 makes a nice street camera with the Pentax 14mm/2.8 DA and the CV 21mm optical finder. Balances very well and also works nicely without the OVF.

I think I would have gotten one if it was easier to carry in a pocket. I sort of like it and would have been shooting with its pancake prime most of my shots.

I wish I had more time to play with the K-01 and see if I would really dare to carry it in my pants pocket. I found with the kit lens it can fit.

On the other hand, I guess I like the Q, way too much and i am "intuition locked" with it right now, which is a rather "high state" of knowing what I can get intuitively which helps my photography immensely. Getting a new camera doesn't help with that.

Best not to change the status quo. Focus on the photography.
The K-01 is extremely well executed by Pentax. They knew exactly what they were doing with this camera. It is a perfect companion to a K5 and gives lots of folks another opportunity to use their K lenses. The Limited lenses are an integral part of what the K-01 is about.
I've settled into this camera and am kind of working my way to my own "high state"

    Hi chiquita:

I upload my images to the gallery here (free). Then copy the Direct Link Code from the gallery into your post - using the square yellow icon with a mountain on it (fifth from end, in post icon bar). Just set your image size when you export to the gallery - I generally use 900px.

Love that first image - which filter?

Yes, I looked it up, and you're right. Frank Gehry's blue wall always presents a bit of a puzzle to the eye, depending on the color of the sky. I photographed it lots of times and I always get different results.
He may design three huge condo towers for downtown Toronto - has to get permission first. I would look forward to that.

Hello Keith, you're getting some very nice pictures out of the K-01. I was happy to see Ricoh and Pentax getting together as the two companies make cameras that don't exactlly march in lock step with the bigger camera maufacturers. How does the K-01 compare to your GXR kit? Do you have a favorite?

    Thanks John:
I like both the GXR and the K-01. They are very different. The GXR is a Chameleon in its own right - I am mostly using the A16 Zoom or the M-mount with legacy lenses. The sensor in the A16 module is the 16Mp Sony, the same as the K-01, but Ricoh leaves out the AA filter. The GXR feel, weight, ergonomics and interface just make it so nice to use.
I bought the K-01 because I liked the design, and that led me to get the K5. The K5 and K-01 are very different cameras, each with its own persona. The Limited primes work very well on the K-01 - nice size and balance. I like the controls on this camera. The IS is also very nice to have.
Most people who have the GXR say that if they could have just one camera, this would be it. I still see it that way too, but I'm anxious just like everyone to see what Ricoh has in store for the GXR.

Thanks for the reply Keith. I'm trying to decide what camera to get now. The Sigma DP2M produced wonderful pictures but was too limited for me. I need to be able to shoot in low light, and a bit quicker than the Sigma allowed. I knew ou had to shoot a certian way with it, but had to give it a try. I had a GRD I for the past 5 years (it just died) and loved the UI, and nice IQ for a small sensor camera. And I've had a few Pentax as well, K10, K20, and a K5 not to long ago. The Pentax lenses are terriffic. So I am considering the GXR or K-01. The K-01 has better movie capabilities, but I could live without it. The fun with the GXR forum has great photographers contributing and I spend a lot of time there looking at the excellent photos... I'm pretty sure I can't go wrong either way... Just have to ponder on it a while....
    Thanks again for your response...

Does focus peaking work with older lenses such as a Super Tak???

Re: Fun with the Pentax K-01

Thanks Keith, thats good to know. I have my DP2M for sale but have updated the ad to include trades for Pentax gear. I don't know why I sell off my Pentax stuff to try other cameras when I love the look of Pentax cameras and their lenses.... If I can sell the Sigma I'll buy either the K-30 or K-01, otherwise hoping for a trade. Thanks again for all the info and wonderful photos.....
