    Fun With The K30

My Pentax K30 just arrived a couple of hours ago, lousy very dull light so just a quick ten minutes in the garden to test it out and a couple indoors, I mean you have to don't you.

All taken with the kit lenses and handheld.

My initial thoughts are that it is a big improvement on the K-r and handles very well and all in all it is a very traditional photographers camera which suits me. My biggest disapoint is that CaptureOne does not yet support the raw files.

My better half who was not to pleased I had taken it.

    ISO 12800 f/8 @ 1/60sec 200mm

    Gabe ISO 12800 f/8 @ 1/60sec 55mm

    ISO 800, f/5.6 @ 1/200sec, 125mm

    ISO 800, f/8 @ 1/100sec, 55mm

    ISO 3200, f/701 @ 1/250sec, 200mm

Better images to come I hope when the weather improves.
Regards Paul. One day I hope to be the person my dog thinks I am.

More nice shots. I see the focal length as 300mm -- are these a prime 300 or the 55-300 DA lens?

I almost snapped up a K-30 but then started thinking about the K-5 cameras on sale. So far, I took some pictures with my m4/3 Olympus, both the 20mm Panasonic and 45mm Olympus lenses, and marveled at how good they can be. I saw your work with the E-PL3 and Olympus 45 lens and it is excellent with that equipment as well.

    Hi Paul
These are great - excellent photos, you can't blame the camera for how good they are!

With Respect to RAW files and Capture - can't you save the raw files as DNG . . . then Capture should read them okay?

    all the best

The K-30 only shoots DNG and not PEF and it will open the Pentax DNG file but CO7 definitely does not support them...and yes that is blue water and sky!

Lightroom should do fine. Aperture may be ok. May be supported.

Well, could be Mars though ...

But did you try ICC Profile under Base Characteristics ?
Perhaps you can do a bit of experimenting with different camera profiles.
    I'd try Pentax K5 Generic V2 first.
    Give it a go !

Tried them all and even using the advanced colour editor in conjunction with the WB tools but its a no go.

I also have LR4 which I am using just for the K-30 at the moment as it works fine with the K-30's DNG's as does ACDSee Pro 6 (which I never use for raw convesion).

But the new CO7 engine really does it better for me so I am hoping it is not long before CO comes out with a profile for it.

One from a couple of days ago, I fortuitously managed to catch him framed in the holly.

I thought Iíd support the K-30 camp with some images. I enjoy viewing many of the Ďfun withí threads and would love to join in, but I seem doomed to choose cameras which donít have a great following amongst enthusiasts. My last camera was an NX10, I love it but not many others do. Anyway here are some BW photos of the Rye Harbour area taken with a Miranda 24mm at f8 some with more processing than others.

Also, hi to craftysnapper , I like all your bright clear photos. Particularly the reflected tree and robin in the snow. By the look of the bird photos you are a UK photographer too. Thanks Ian

Welcome Ian, nice pics and it's great camera that I am sure you will enjoy using.

So that makes two of us posting in this thread and I do not feel so lonely now and I am sure there will be more eventually.

    Re: Fun With The K30

They are three lovely photos. We rarely get long tail tits in our garden. They are so delicate. The robin has excellent detail in the feathers; I wonder what lens you have. I donít do much telephoto, I only have the old 50-200mm and itís a bit soft for my liking. The pigeon shot is very striking because of the strong white and blue background, with the light plum of the bird. All very nice.

Thank you Ian, they were taken with the Pentax DA 55-300mm which I was lucky enough to have picked up in a Amazon one day sale for half price ( £137).

Saying that I have always found the 50-200 WR that came with the k-30 very sharp indeed and I use it a lot.

I have the old 50-200mm which came with my K100Ds and it's fine for web use but I print 19x13 and close ups of birds aren't quite sharp enough at that size.

Here are three sunset seascapes, 2 with Tamron 17-50 and the last with Pentax 50-200.

    Re: Fun With The K30

A chalky display at the University of North Carolina last week. We were visiting colleges.

I liked the subject matter and the resulting number of verticals. I was just snapping quick shots rather than really photographing; I would have liked to work on better framing the scene, although there were actually students in the display that made it more difficult.

Nice-sized chalk. I wonder where the chalk board might be.

    Pentax K-30 with 18-135 lens.

Lovely photo. I’ve been watching Are You Being Served recently and it reminds of their catch phrase ‘don’t worry about the sleeves, they’ll ride up with ware’.
