Re: Fun with images taken with the Pentax K1

In the "Fun with MF Images" thread in the medium format forum, I have posted comparison shots taken with the K1 and Pentax 15-30mm lens, pixel shifted, and the Fuji GFX and 32-64mm Fujinon lens. Interesting exercise...

With the razorsharp FA 50/1.7. A crummy plastic lens but very very good!

Alan, have you also tried Silky Pix for pixel shift?

Yes I have Tom, lots to like but I find RawTherapee nails movement (especially water which I shoot a lot). I use Lightroom as my main s/w and on static subjects works very well.

Alan:

It's good to know that RawTherapee handles movement well; movement seems to be the Achilles heal of pixel shift. Another question: is it possible to use only one of the four exposures involved in pixel shift? I ask since that if so, that single image could be applied as a layer with a mask to correct any movement artifacts.

Thanks,

Tom

Sorry Tom, can't help you with that one. Not something I have needed yet so I have not even looked to see if it is possible.

If you have the correct version of RawTherapee, look at the 'Raw' tab and under demosaicing it will say 'Amaze' (the default), scroll down to pixelshift and off you go.

A street photo in the park, ( 28-105mm) it's much better than I thought it would be, given the low price.):

K-1, Irix 15mm f2.4, River Weir.
As a point of interest, the line of rocks in the river were the bank defences before the winter of 2015/16! Massive erosion and movement of the river course due to the incredibly wet winter.

Ok I definitely have wrong version. I've tried to find proper one but failed. There is topic on RT forum about PS but I'm not shure if there is it. Could you be so kind and show me proper version?

Re: Fun with images taken with the Pentax K1

Michiel, Alan, you guys (and your photo's) are missed in the Sony threads , but fortunately we can still see your work here . There is a good reason to check out other fora on GetDPI as well and that's not limited to just the K1 thread.

The K1 indeed seems a very capable camera, but I'm not going to switch systems since in my case the limiting factor is not my equipment but my own skills and eye.

I had a chance to use my newly acquired K-1. I'm very impressed with this camera. I had some fun using it with a 1960s era 50mm, f/1.4, 8-element Super Takumar, a lens of some fame. All handheld at f/1.4 or f/2.0.

The fun has just begun! The more you use it and explore with it, the more you will like it! Very flexible tool in creative hands. Great start!

Yes, you can also export any of the four pixel shift exposures using RawTherapee. You can also export a black&white motion mask if you like.

Re: Fun with images taken with the Pentax K1

Hi this time some small technical post. Precisely post production. I have FA 20mm 2.8. Very like this small lens. But it have some hat field curvature. very annoying.
I've tried manual correction systems in different programs. DCU, Lightroom, Silkypix, RAW Therapee. And best was in Silkypix as only this program have two stage correction. But I was still only half way solution.
I'm still playing arond with C1. I've got suggestion from this forum to use Pentax 21mm lens. But it is profile for APSC camera. So it not give me what I wan't. Next step was find something most similar.
So I go to sony lenses department and tried Sony 20mm 2.8 SAL20F28 set distorion on 120% and got it!.

Very best correction I could get:

Re: Fun with images taken with the Pentax K1

K1 and Irix 15mm, over approx 2 hours at Yosemite National Park. Conditions were perfect, with just enough moon to illuminate the falls and head walls. The reflection was due to the massive flooding on the Merced River as normally this meadow is dry, so I worked this spot a couple of times.

The K1 still is plagued by the white spots, which is sad, but thankfully C1 will take them out. The night skies in Yosemite are trying as I had to remove over 34 plane trails in this sequence, and not to mention the cars. I ended up at 1:00 am on this one and there were still a lot of cars driving around. The field in the foreground was hard to keep from being blown out due to cars pulling into the lot to check to see what I was up to.

Also the Irix 15mm is very hard to use at night. It gets what I would call a bit of double vision on the stars, if not perfectly focused. Also the lack of C1 and Pentax lens profiles is pretty telling amazing that C1 doesn't even have the 15-30mm.

Still a great camera and very nice to use at night.

Re: Fun with images taken with the Pentax K1

There's a rail-trail close to my home where I often take my lab for walks, but usually sans camera gear. I have though photographed the 2 mile stretch of our normal walk on many occasions and am starting to get a nice collection of images. When bringing the gear, it's the backpack with its assortment and the tripod. I have almost never not used a tripod. I'm very uncomfortable hand holding a camera. It's just the way I have always done things. On a walk earlier this spring I just brought the K-1 and 100mm macro and no tripod. I did mostly panning shots with the shake reduction turned on. I ended up with about 10 shots that were fairly interesting. A cool thing that was going on is that the shake reduction was trying to stabilize the image. My thinking was that it would help stabilize the blur in the direction of the pan, but it also ended up stabilizing (the first?) part of the image. There is a combination of blur plus areas that are almost sharp. Here's one of the results. The image is a reflection in a small flooded pond. Then it has been inverted.
