GetDPI.com Winter workshop in Moab, Sedona , Flagstaff and Monument Valley

*Update for 12-12-08: We did it! We've got enough to go!

    Hello Everyone Greetings from GetDPI!

Jack and I are planning our winter workshop, many of you have asked, so here a few idea's on what we would like to do.

First one, the timing is Wednesday January 28th start time in Moab, Utah and this will be our shoot and raw processing and Photoshop workshop which will end on Saturday January 31st. (Actually we meet in Moab Tuesday evening for cocktails, then start with a Wednesday morning shoot.) We will have teaching and image sharing modules in here and also have some manufacturer’s reps with us in Moab. Given the economy we decided to lower the price to help get more folks to come. This one is 1195.00 but we need to have at least 10 people commit to even hit the go button. We need to confirm first, but once confirmed we have enough folks, we’ll need full payment. December 15th is our final decision date.

We also decided to add a mini option on the front end of this workshop if folks are interested. This would start on Monday morning the 26th in Sedona, move through Flagstaff and then stopping in the Monument Valley area on our way to Moab. So Jack and I will be starting in Phoenix and this would be a good airport to fly into then rental car up and back to Moab. I would suggest the carpooling idea with a fellow attendee, but that's up to you. We will provide a list of who is starting on the front end. The cost on the front end is only a additional $199 dollars if you do the Moab workshop, $399 by itself. As you know Moab is a target rich shooting area and Sedona and Flagstaff are as well . So lot's of great images to be taken and being the winter the chance of snow on mountain tops is almost a guarantee. Last year we got a full blown storm in Moab which led to spectacular imagery, we hope for the same this year!

Our magic number to make this a go is 10 so please get back to us ASAP. If we get 10 yes, then we're on. As always, this is open to all formats and all camera's plus all levels of experience. Once we have a idea on the numbers more details will follow shortly. We really hope you can all attend as you know we have a lot of fun together and the learning experience is top notch.

Please reply to both Jack and I with a yes or no so we can try and make this happen: [email protected] and [email protected].

    Thanks!

    Guy and Jack

Full list of details will be forthcoming on hotels and such

BTW I have 5 committed already and a few looking at there schedules and getting there hall passes. Don't wait too long. Already getting commitments from folks that want to support our workshop with demo's and some very good raw processing module's. I also found another driving route to take that may include the Petrified National forest on the way out of Flagstaff

As of this morning, we are up to 7 confirmed, so getting very close to being a full go! (In fact, two more confirmed and we will go!)

This is shaping up to be another outstanding workshop. We just received confirmation that our favorite C1 tech-guru, Doug Peterson from Capture Integration, will be onsite to deliver advanced training on C1, and of course our Phase rep will be on hand with loaner Phase gear. Leaf has also expressed interest in participating, so we should have a Leaf AFi and some lenses to demo, and as always we will have our Leica reps and plenty of loaner Leica gear on hand for you to try too!

Just some links of places will most likely will be going through on our way to Moab. Only one spot I have not been to is Canyon De Chelley which is a possible stop as we plan our trip route.

But here is some nice links of my fair state for folks to get a idea of. I complain a lot about the heat here but Arizona is truly on of the most fascinating States with such diversity in landscape.

Re: GetDPI.com Winter workshop in Moab, Sedona , Flagstaff and Monument Valley

Jack and i have been working on this all day and here are the travel plans as we see them today. Now since this is the winter months we have to be aware of weather and road and park closings . Although I was at the Petrified Forest exactly the same time last year and nice light snow on the mountains that made it outstanding shooting. We will update this with more information as we plan for this workshop. We picked target rich locations for outstanding image captures. We tried to keep driving time down and more time to shoot along the way to Moab.

GetDPI Winter Workshop Travel Plans to Moab and Workshop Venue.

January 25th Sunday Evening in Sedona.
We will begin in Sedona on Monday, January 26th at 6:30 am in the parking lot of Best Western. Our suggestion would be to get into Phoenix on Sunday then drive the 90 miles or so to Sedona, or there is also a shuttle service http://www.sedona-phoenix-shuttle.com/ that can get you there to meet up with your shared driving members for folks are doing car pooling. Here are a few inexpensive hotel recommendations. http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/index?variant http://www.sedonaReal.com/ http://www.innofsedona.com/ or look at any of these fine hotels http://www.sedona.net/category.php/s...resortslodging
January 26th Monday Sedona to Chinle
From the parking lot of Best Western in Sedona, we will head out for a sunrise shoot and hit a couple nearby spots in and around Sedona. Than we’ll get breakfast, check out of our Sedona rooms and head to Flagstaff for a short walk around shoot in downtown and the old railroad yards. Flagstaff is about 30 miles from Sedona, so only a short drive. From Flagstaff, we head to the Petrified Forest, about 125 miles East toward Holbrook. We will need to leave Flagstaff around 12:30 to get to the South entrance at a good time to shoot there. The drive from the South entrance to the North Entrance is about 20 miles and will put us back on I 40. So we have until 5 pm for shooting late afternoon in the Petrified Forest. Once we hit I 40 going North, we have a 100 mile drive to the town of Chinle for our hotel and the next day shoot in Canyon De Chelley. We will spend the night in Chinle at http://www.holidayinn.com/h/d/hi/1/e...-chnaz&dp=true or http://www.bestwesternarizona.com/ho...de-chelly-inn/ http://www.tbirdlodge.com/accommodations.htm Still doing research on these hotel locations and try to get a group rate
Also plan on an optional, later group dinner there. Then off to bed in preparation for the next morning.

January 27th In Chinle heading to Moab
We will meet in the hotel lobby at 7:15 am and head to the park which opens at 8 am. Note there is a time change in Chinle, so you lose 1 hour sleep! (Sorry!) We will head into Canyon de Chelly as soon as the park opens and drive along the South rim, stopping at the several scenic overlook locations along the way. If we want, we can decide as a group to take a 2.5 hour walk along the desert floor to White House ruins. We do want to plan on leaving Canyon De Chelly by around noon or so. From there to Moab we have about a three hour drive of 150 miles, and would like to get into Moab to check in to our hotel there in time to get to Arches National Park and Balance Rock for a Sunset shoot (only 20 minutes or so from our hotel in Moab). Our Hotel in Moab will be the Moab Valley Inn. Then back to Moab for dinner at the Moab Brewery right across the street from our hotel. Then off to bed in preparation for the next morning sunrise shoot and official start for our Moab workshop.
    ~~~
    January 28th Wednesday in Moab with the next 3 days of shooting, raw processing, critiques and workshop modules. These details are forthcoming and will be filled in under this section.
    ~~~
January 31st Saturday workshop officially ends at Noon. Then head down to Monument Valley for an optional Sunset shoot, optional dinner, optional stay in Kayenta for a Sunrise shoot, then head back to Phoenix. There is no charge for this final leg.

Re: GetDPI.com Winter workshop in Moab, Sedona , Flagstaff and Monument Valley

BTW, here is the schedule for the Moab portion of the workshop. We're going to be pushing each other to improved composition

    • Tuesday 27th
4:00 PM: Head to Balance Rock for an informal and quick Sunset shoot.
7:00 PM: Meet and greet dinner social.

    • Wednesday the 28th Official workshop start
6:30 AM: Sunrise shoot in Arches Park Place and Spires.
    9:30 AM: Breakfast
11:00 AM: Downloading, storage and file backup protocol, Raw processing basic theory.
12:30 PM: Raw Processing in C1, Part 1 basics by Doug Petterson from Capture Integration. (Basic RAW techniques are very similar across all RAW converters with minor differences. However, anybody that specifically would prefer getting ACR/LR basics instead of C1, Guy or Jack will be happy to accommodate you in a separate room during this module.)
2:00 PM: Capture techniques for sets destined for later focus blending or later stitching into panoramas or high-resolution composite images in CS.
3:00 PM: Composition including choice and use of various focal lengths.
3:30 PM: Depart for sunset shoot of Garden of Eden in Arches NP.
    6:00 PM: Return to Motel.
7:30 PM: Optional Group Dinner, probably at the “Moab Brewery.” (Note that Utah is an ABC state, so all the beer is 3.2.)

    •Thursday the 29th
5:30 AM: Leave for first sunrise shooting destination. Probably Landscape Arch in Arches NP, about a 1-1/4 mile gentile hike from parking lot at the far end of Arches. However we drive by the “Fins” which depending on atmospheric conditions can make an ideal setting for panorama or IR captures. (IR color is best captured prior to sunrise, so if you get out early enough you actually get a two-fer shooting opportunity with IR!)
10:00 AM: Optional group breakfast in Moab.
12:00 PM: CS4 panorama stitching and focus blending example session.
1:00 PM: Group Image review and critique. Bring three images to share with the group. (We’ll spend approx 3 minutes per image.)
3:30 PM: Leave for evening shoot (location TBD by group).
    6:00 PM: Return to Motel
    7:30 PM: Optional Group Dinner

    •Friday the 30th
5:00 AM: Leave for Mesa Arch (Need to be there early to get a spot, about a 20 minute hike in from the parking lot). Since Mesa Arch is very weather dependant, our alternate for that morning is the Green River overlook.
10:00 AM: Optional group breakfast in Moab.
12:00 PM: C1 masters class, including Color editor and Skintone tool.
1:30 PM: Image Processing Session. Instructors will be moving around answering questions as you process files. This is the ideal opportunity to perfect one or two new processing techniques.
3:30 PM: Sunset shoot to be determined
    6:00 PM Return to Motel
    7:30 PM Optional Group Dinner

    •Saturday the 31st
5:00 AM: Optional AM shoot for participants. (Instructors meet privately to prepare for final image reviews.) Suggest Mesa Arch (2nd chance) or Landscape Arch/Fins.
    9:00 AM: Optional Group Breakfast
10:30 AM: Final Image Review Session: Bring ONE image to share with the group, instructors will critique and comment.
12:00 PM: Official close of Moab workshop.
Leave Moab to Monument Valley for Sunset Shoot. This is a free option to workshop members.

Sunday Feb. 1st Sunrise shoot and head for home

Hi folks we are working on the hotels and making arrangements and will send out e-mails to folks this week that are going. So you can plan airfares and such accordingly. For those starting out in Sedona and going on the road to get to Moab remember we start 6:30 am Monday in Sedona so getting in Sunday night is advised. Jack and i are working on blocks in Chinle and Moab as a group rate. Monument valley is own your own since we do not have numbers yet on who is doing that leg returning back to Phoenix. There is a spot available but we do not expect anyone to fill it in this short of time and we are very satisfied with the turn out of our members to join us. Please start looking next week for images to be coming in from this awesome workshop and seriously if you did not sign up than please start thinking about joining us in the future. We have not posted comments in a long time from the workshop members but almost all of them return for more workshops, that to us means we are doing it right and folks really learn and enjoy them. Also keep a eye on all of the forums since the camera's being used vary as much as the folks attending. We have G1's, M8's, Phase, Hassy, Canon, Nikon, Olympus and several tech camera's being used so images will most likely be all over the forums from the attendees. Plus we have special training in CS4, C1 and Lightroom. Also our locations are in many hot spots in Arizona and Utah so look forward to seeing a very diverse set of images. Thanks for your support and for being part of a great forum.
    Warmest Regards
    Jack and Guy
