Announcing a Yosemite workshop trio, beginning in January 2014!

The format for this one is a little different than they've been in the past. Firstly, Guy and I have decided to offer a trio of seasonal workshops in Yosemite this year. The first will be Winter, hoping to catch the typical January snows and associated unique imagery Yosemite Valley has to offer under snow. At this time of year we cannot get into the high country, so most imaging will occur in the valley proper. Assuming this venue is as successful as we expect it to be, we will then schedule similar workshops for spring and fall and accordingly, those of you that attend the winter venue will get first priority for the spring and fall workshops.

The next big change is we'll be eliminating the transportation portion. The cost of renting the large vans added significantly to the workshop fee, not to mention made the logistics get exponentially more complex for our own travel and pre-scouting arrangements when having to get folks from airports to the shooting locations. There is then the issue of comfort and convenience, where we've had enough participants prefer to drive themselves and carry their own gear, and because of that we've decided to eliminate the transportation element for this series. On the upside, it lowers the cost for you!

We are still including meals and lodging for 4 days. Meals will include 4 breakfasts and 4 dinners as well as snacks and water in the cars. We'll all be in Groveland, participants staying at the historic Groveland Hotel, a fairly nice B&B in the area. Jack has access to a very nice classroom site a few doors down from the hotel where we can meet to work images together, though it does not have wifi. Jack also has a cabin in Groveland where he and the instructors will stay that further reduce workshop fees for this series. Obviously, participants will need to make their own arrangements to get to and from Groveland and in and around the park. Normally it is pretty easy to coordinate carpools with other participants once we know who all is coming, and we'll facilitate your working together to sort that out -- many of you already know several others from prior workshops you've attended. Note that at this time of year, chains or 4WD with snow tires may be required to get into or out of(!) the park depending on the amount of snow.

Dates for this workshop are Sunday January 19th (1:00PM meeting in Groveland) through Wednesday January 22nd, departing on Thursday the 23rd after breakfast -- note that Monday the 20th is the Martin Luther King Holiday.

The basic format is subject to modification based on our pre-scouting and weather patterns, but is initially scheduled to be:
~ Sunday: Welcome in Groveland at 1:00 PM, then a short drive to some local shooting at the historic railroad park in nearby Jamestown, dinner afterward.
~ Monday: Early AM departure for the valley, AM shoot to about 10:30, then a breakfast break in the park. A few hours of personal time to relax or shop and visit the gallery after breakfast, meeting up again at around 2:00 PM for the afternoon shoot, departing after sunset, dinner in Groveland.
~ Tuesday: Breakfast at the Groveland Hotel, followed by a classroom day of image processing and image review. Possible afternoon shooting as group desires. Dinner in Groveland.
~ Wednesday: Another full day in the park, basically a repeat of Monday.
~ Thursday: Breakfast in Groveland, then image reviews in the classroom for anybody who wants them, workshop wrapped up by 1:PM.

Cost for this workshop is going to be $1895 per person, single occupancy. You are as usual welcome to bring a significant other, but will need you to cover their meal costs. (There is a small spa in Groveland proper and there are wineries and shopping in nearby Sonora or Murphy's, but they'll need their own transportation to get around.) Knowing that some of you will want to come a day or two earlier and possibly stay a day or two later, just let us know and we can help you arrange the added lodging if you want.

We are going to limit the winter one to 10 total participants. So if you are interested or have further questions, please email jack.

Oh, and a quick note on gear: bring whatever camera gear you want to shoot with! At this time, we don't know what reps or loaner gear we'll have on hand, but likely some Phase and Leica gear can be obtained if we know about your desires ahead of time. Note that the valley in winter in particular, there is usually very good opportunity for wildlife when coyotes and deer are much more visible, so you can put a longer lens to good use. Of course, the valley landscape itself lends itself to everything from very wide through moderate telephotos, so it's truly a time you can put most of your gear to use. We'll be filling you in on recommended clothing and foot wear in future emails.

    Thanks,

    Jack and Guy

Also of note Jack and I are planning a updated Leica S review and will do that in Yosemite the days prior to attendees coming but will be available during the workshop for folks to give it a spin. Leica gear is coming directly from Leica and also some gear from Capture Integration. Again not a specific format or brand workshop and more about creating images workshop.

Just a quick update -- we still have a few slots available. Weather is looking really good for valley snow with early and more severe than usual storms predicted. It will be an awesome photo op for all who attend!

We have one room left and before we cancel it we wanted to make this our last call. Please contact Jack ASAP if you want to join in the fun. This is a small workshop and it will be a hoot. We have a Leica S and a Alpa FPS on board for folks to try and Guy is shooting the whole new Sony Alpha E series system. He needs help. LOL
