    Security guards and police

I'm thinking of starting a new series on pictures of security guards and police in the UK

This one doesn't look too happy

Whereas this one looks very happy, and I got the police in as well.

That would be a nice series. Careful though your dealing with home land security laws so be careful, someone in a bad mood that day could string you up to dry. Good time to ask first shoot second. Of course depends on the situation but here in the US this is becoming very difficult to shoot what YOU want. Some public area's are completely off limits. Sad we live in these times.
Photography is all about experimentation and without it you will never learn art.

The current debate in the UK about freedom of photography is why I thought it would be good to start this series. My argument would be that I'm photographing the guards, not what they are guarding. Bet a lot of them wouldn't agree with the logic of that though!
I'm interested to see what reaction I get rather than pushing the limits, hopefully it will be enlightening rather than incarcerating.

Anselm Kiefer produced a series on the same theme in Düsseldorf in the 70s.

Helen, your police look like the people our police are trying to protect us from!

Having said that, if you spend any time at one of our air ports the armed police there look much the same.

    Powerful images.

    excellent shots, all!!!

but it's making me cry because i wasn't allowed to go to the torch relay here in paris today banned by boyfriend for fear i'd get arrested and kicked out of france; banned by friends and docs for fear i'd mess up my still delicate flower of an arm (i'm getting the elbow drained and immobilised for the second week in a row). it's against my nature to blindly obey and being banned would normally make me go for it, but in this case...

    sheesh! i hate being adult!

    Re: Security guards and police

Does anyone recall seeing Andreas Gursky's student project of security guards in downtown Duesseldorf. He was a student of the Bechers, the pioneers of the modern, Germanic "type" study consisting of exhaustive series of frontal pictures of very similar examples of an everyday thing, (in their case, industrial buildings, water towers...), which you would never have realized has a rich design vocabulary.

He did what i guess was a gentle parody of this -- shots of pairs of security guards, sitting at the lobby desk of office buildings, looking very serious and responsible. Always pairs, so they can keep each other honest, responsible and perhaps awake. There are a few examples from the series in Gursky's big retrospective book. In suits, not at all like the SWAT teams that have to follow our President around.

ISO 400, f/4 and 1/18th because I wasn't paying attention. The resultant motion blur is kinda cool though

This thread is generating some interesting comments and great images from opposite extremes of the subject. More risky ones from me will have to wait until I can get myself into a risky situation, but for now here is another one from the gentler side, I've posted it before but it fits well here and I like it so here it is again.

    GRD2 this time

Helen, thanks for your kind words about my shots. I think the tones of yours are just right for the gravity of your subject matter, as I said, very powerful.

    thank you so much, Helen
I like yours, your subject matter is so much more timely than mine, stressfull yes, but do we not live in such times?
I really like the way the GRD draws, that look is maintained even with the aux lenses, esp the GW-1 which IMHO is a completely awesome performer.

The End of Print, I'm not prepared to be gentle about photos as good as these! I'm inclined to say quite aggressively that they are superb.

hehe thanks for the aggressively good crit will.

was pretty taking these photos, you can see some of the officers in them giving me the stare!

The Police Evidence Gatherers (you can see one in the first pic) all had video cameras and were videoing the proceedings.
My opinion is - hey, if they are allowed to film US then we should be allowed to catch THEM on film too

    Re: Security guards and police

Wow, what an interesting photo series (as has been Lili's 'commutes').
But more than a little sobering to see that heavily armed police are common sights on streets everywhere, something that at one time was unknown in the western world.
Particularly poignant for me was to see that Edinburgh, my home city, is up there with the rest of them. 'The End of Print's' pictures show more coppers than would have comprised the entire city force in years past. At that time of course, they were only armed with a whistle, a notebook and a pencil.
What would Dixon have made of it all..........

    Re: Security guards and police

Unfortunately Doxon of Dick Green never really existed.
Have any of us looked at many airports now-doing the paperwork (passport control) we have Policemen or State employees.
Doing the security check ,that is looking for arms and frisking people , we have private security companies paid for by the airport. Perhaps it should be the other way round.

The End of Print-Your great photos are not like the Edinburgh I remember.
I last went during festival time and remember seeing a Girl dancing on a post box,fire-eaters etc etc. It was a party!Your photos give an impression of Warsaw early 80's... This sort of photography makes us wake up a bit to the "soft" repression we are under.

yeah the images, particularly the one outside Frasers, looks like a photo from russia in the early 80s, think its the communist-style building that does it in that pic.

These photos were taken in Edinburgh a year or two? ago when the "Make Poverty History" demonstrations were happening. The city was mobbed with police - extra officers were drafted up from england to cope with the crowds.

Was quite scary but really exciting to take those pics. You can see some of the officers giving me the "stare" in those pics.

    Re: Security guards and police

I was at Bluewater in Essex this evening getting my son some new school shoes and this is what we saw when we came out into the car park. I took lots of images because it was hand held at 1/10 second exposure so I wanted to make sure I got a steady one. AS I was finishing an extremely polite security guard came up and said that there is a no photography policy at Bluewater because of the potential terrorist risk. I pointed out I was taking a picture from Bluewater, not of Bluewter! Surprisingly this failed to annoy him and he apologized and commented on how good the sky looked but that I really wasn't allowed to take photos so could I please not do so next time I was there. He then said if I thought this view was good I should see what it is like when he is there at dawn! LOL nice bloke.

Anyway this is it, not of a security guard but whilst being told off by one
