    GRD4 Street Images

Knock, knock.... Oh my I thought...UPS is here. I saw that look on Tanya's face. Tanya of course is my Russian Wife. I love her, I really do and she tells me that I do every day but...when it comes to cameras, we have a slightly different opinion. Her opinion is of course, I have have too many, meaning more then 1. My opinion is that no matter how many I have, I'm always 1 short. I know no one else here feels that way but I sure do.
So, my opinion won out his time...and here's a few from the White GRD4.

The first one appeals to me a lot. The smoker looks a bit surprised, and the smiler in the image on the bus saw it coming...

I'm not hiding out there. I even use a white GRD4. One can't hide with that camera.

OK, this may have tipped me over the top

I keep looking at my unused GRD2 and have oftened wondered. Is this like a breath of fresh air after the GXR? Your opinion may cost me money

Keith, I adore my GXR's but there is a new found freedom with the GRD4.
It's not my first affair with the GRD but it's the first time I have committed to being serious with it....

It is impossible to compare these two camera against each other. Even Reid can't make the GRD4 change focal lengths.

So the comparison has just been made and you got away cheap.

The Sony RX thing will blow over quickly. The GRD legend will never go away.

    A white one arrives today from B & H.

Didn't realize the deal you could get on white ($450.) That was enough to do it.

Keith, I have a week spot for Ricoh too, considering the GXR.
Sean Reid has it too it seems, also for the GRD
And a RX100 would service at 28mm nearly all the time, unless I would take a detail at a roof.
But must admit the IQ seems ok at the RX, but the userfriendly functions and snapshot and perhaps some more Leica-like feeling of a Ricoh might be the tempting point.
Perhaps a Sony will be left on the shelf just like the Panasonic's of mine.
It has also much to do with the mental connections you build up with your camera.

    I agree.

To me, the camera should get out of the way - it's a tool for the user to capture (not record) what he or she sees in their brain.
My Sony cameras (Nex) never got out of the way. That's why only the 5n is left. And that's for legacy lens reasons.

I took out my white GRD today and felt right at home. My GRD II goes off to a young photographer friend tomorrow.

Yes, a sort of extension of your mind and your right arm. I allways had that feeling with my M6, and my Hassy SWC, never got it with my Panasonic's, Canons powershots etc., only got it a tiny bit with the Nikons D3 and even less now the D800E, where I'm dissapointed with the IQ, shallow DOF, and IQ is way better with the GXR, even though I'm not feeling more than 85% connected with the GXR (but that might be a lot though after all) and I use it the most. The GXR and perhaps a GRD IV, by the wisdomwords, less is more, might do the job, for the mind and soul.

Thanks, actually when I was a real photographer doing film, I used a few M4's but....I had a pair of M'6's that I just adored. That's probably what your seeing. That M6 stuff is still in my head, it just comes out digitally....

    By the way:
Sean please allow me to bring your answer:
    "Hi Thorkil,
Perhaps, but with no eye level finder (and no hotshoe for an external finder) it gets lower priority here. I'm not yet sure if the hype is justified.
    Cheers"
Looking at your pic's I'm perhaps convinced that a RX would end as the Panasonic's = collecting dust, and the more "primitive"/dedicated GRD IV might be the case, but black it will be...

His thoughts don't exist for me. I make my own thoughts and entertain the thoughts of other shooters that I respect. Many be the case.

You either understand a screen in time and space or you don't.
If you get the GRD4, you will understand my statement, you may get it anyway but then, you'll get the GRD4.
Good luck in your quest and thanks for the attention to my work, much appreciated.

    ..that I'll do..
its funny with pictures, the way they tell something and don't...thinking of the way they appeal to your inner soul or rather ones mental condition, some pictures just reach the surface others are hitter deaper and hitting the mood, some spot on, and without knowing it, you are smiling...yours in that leque..
I'll give the GRD IV a try
(and might sell the D800E by the way)

okay, we will see what happen , thought of, yesterday, going through Copenhagens old café's and bars, with that camera in hand. But have, at first to look down (long-stance) in my purse to see what happens down there, have been long ago I had gone with such a purpose, in fact encouraging, but no promises of nothing, but let the circumstances rule, no not on flikr, tryed once to move the attached picture to the text, but didn't succeed, Steen tells its becomming way better by oploading full-sixe some place....afraid you might get boored

    Hi Don,
I've just had that thought that I ought to report a bit. Not because I have to, I know, but anyway, just so....you know
I'm just being mighty impressed by those pictures from the Sigma DP2 Merrill, but I've to have a 28 or wider, so I'll wait for a DP1 Merrill.
And then I have (so far..) taken the decision that if they don't come out with a GRDV soon, I'll have to lay hand on a IV. I have to go simple now. So that one+the Sigma+my GXR will do.
And meanwhile I'll sell my D800E.
But what I also would like to say...KEEP posting a bit pictures, not much, just a bit.

That's a good question but I can answer it easily. For me, there is nothing that compares to the GRD4. I now have and am testing the RX100. It's great but it isn't the GRD in any stretch of the imagination. The GRD5 is still just a dream but hopefully not to the Ricoh engineers. I will get that camera on release and probably before.

I have the RX100 to be a sidekick for the GRD4, not to replace it. That would be an impossibility.

Thank you Don. I guess these words tells it. Allow me to make my own conclusion of your words: The RX might outresolve the GRD, the IQ in the RX might, in some dimensions be different and in some way clinic better, but in the area where you grab the camera by "lust" and feel "creative-dizzy" or what I should call it, the connection and the mood of what one feel to create, you will grab the GRD.

    re: GRD4 Street Images

The way it always was and is for me is like this. I don't want decisions to have to be made when I'm working. I want any decisions to be in the frame and not on the camera. So, the GRD4, (current GRD in use) is set up and I just need to make the frame, raise the camera and let the finger do it's thing.

I think the RX100 has that potential. In fact, I'm getting ready for a few hours on the street this morning. If this camera makes it thru this Sunday, it'll have a home. The odds are that it will.
    Cheers, Don

Don, just a tiny remark, while the third cup of coffee is passing by, and I'm trying to establish some working-energy, I would just like to say about this picture

that this is a magic light, with some beautiful strangely-shiny and very special dreamy mood...

Thorkil, thanks. That image is a recent one made so I could show how my presets work in different images.
If your running Silver Efex or LR 4 let me know. I'll be glad to send you a sample preset.

Hi Don. Thank you. But I'm only using C1. I didn't manage to find out of Lightroom, believe it or not. I'm very unpaitient when it comes to computers etc. And C1 is so straight ahead, in my head
My plan is, when/if I succeed selling my 800E, to buy, at first the Sigma DP2Merril, and I might, just straight ahead buy the GRDIV, now where there wasn't a GRDV at photokina(had hoped).
Perhaps I should investigate more than that ½hour I spend with it, and gave up. But C1 is just so lovely plain and simple to find out, and this program is just so very good connected with my primitive brain.

Although the RX100 might seem more "clean", its also a bit(might even be slightly more than a bit) more boring to my eyes, the GRDIV let you put more energy (and anarchy) in the pictures, which seems to do them very well!
The cure could be waiting and saving for the upcoming V.
(and you are doing something special the edges/contrast that reminds my of the old wonderful "overshining light", burning out, from backlit in old lenses)

I much prefer the GRD4. The processing is from my Street Presets. It works the grit the way I use to get it with my M's in my darkroom..

I'm not sure about the GRD5. I'd be worrying about that larger sensor killing the mojo the GRD's all have. I think we're a little ways off before anything is announced on the 5 anyway so...not to worry...yet...

Don, yes it shouldn't be more than 16Mp, and perhaps its better with fewer and fatter pixels.
Finally sold my Nikon D800E and left the building DSLR wise for good, I think. I have to have a Sigma DP2M I guess, allthough my need is wider, but just to have to have that unique sharpness, and then I'll afterwards go for the GRD 4 or 5, and let my GXR do the wider things when I need that.
Perhaps its about age, being able to quit what one previously had ambitions about, and even longing for the more simple stuff.

Love this little gem, now it's set in B&W and the RX100 in color.

Sir, I thank you. I have been very busy working with LEO getting homeless into shelters to protect them from Sandy. I expect to be back to somewhat normal life shortly and will post shortly also.

    Wonderful pictures, Don!
Wasn't aware of the 21 adapter lens! Looks good.
Got a GRD IV black reserved. Sigma Merrills will have to wait.
By the way like your highlights-blown away pictures a lot.
And the buss-stop has something special too.

    Thanks,
The adapter is something I ususally would never look at. A few shooters suggested I try it and low and behold, it's very good. It doesn't change anything but focal length. So now ya get a 21mm f1.9.

The photos were all run thru LR4 only. I used some presets I designed and haven't had the need for SEP in a while.

I need that adapter for going wide enough inside and outside buildings, perhaps not for streets and so
(looking forward to once again having a tiny camara in my pocket..going to collect it right now, guess it reminds a lot of the GXR, just smaller and easier)
