    LX7 Images

On Black Friday, I could not resist to purchase the LX7 for the incredible price of $299, including sales taxes. While, I do not feel any of the photos are brilliant, I found the LX7 a nice improvement over my late LX5 with its faster lens, improved LCD, fast focusing and other feature enhancements. The LX7 probably does not match up to some of its competition with larger sensors, but its competition costs much more than $299. Following are a few quick photos I took soon after I got the camera.

The first is the center of a rose.

A self portrait (I liked the 3D effect):

A photo of Harry the Whippet (Not my best dog photo, but if you look in his eye carefully, you will see my reflection taking the photo, very sharp for this small sensor camera.):

    Hi Howard,

Great stuff, nothing wrong with those. At that price I'm surprised you didn't buy two, one for each hand!

Certainly for the web and for up to 12x10 inch prints the quality of your pics is much more than adequate.

I'm still enjoying my RX100, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the LX7.

Hope we see more snaps of Harry.

    Cheers,

    Gandolfi.

    Gandolfi

Thank you for comments. After viewing the excellent photos you and others had posted on the RX100 thread, I really wanted the RX100 primarily due to its ability to produce sharp, well exposed images in a variety of circumstances. The RX100's small size, large and high resolution sensor also attracted me, but the LX7 seemed like such a great value I could not pass up.

Since getting the LX7, i have not been disappointed. Harry also appreciates your comments about him.

A few photos I took at Disneyland. I was satisfied with the photos when the conditions were bright but had few keepers when I increased the ISO above 400.

That has been my experience with Panasonic P&S cameras. At ISO 400 and below they are very good. I missed the cyber Monday specials on the LX7 so I ended up buying the LX5.

    Re: LX7 Images

I had a LX5 and got many very good photos with it. Unfortunately my LX5 was lost, I would have waited for one of the larger sensor P&S, but they were not worth twice the price of a LX7 at Cyber Friday pricing. However at current prices the LX5 is a great deal. Good luck with your LX5.

A few of many from a trip that I took on a trip to Northern California. I am very impressed with the LX7 from both an IQ and a handling standpoint.

Well, so far that seems to be the case. I've had mine for less than a week, tho'.

I guess we just need to spread the gospel of what a great little camera this is!

N >= 3: I couldn't resist the December fire-sale either. Just haven't had a chance to put much mileage on mine yet. Everything in good time.

    Carry on...

    Maggie,

I was going through the advanced LX7 manual and was wondering about how you achieve such beautiful B&W's. Are you shooting B&W JPG's directly from the camera than doing PP? Or are you shooting raw or JPG and converting to B&W when you PP? Or do you have another method that you are willing to share with me?

    Re: LX7 Images

    Thanks for the compliments, Howard!

I'm shooting RAW and doing my conversions in Aperture, using Silver Efex Pro 2 as a plug-in. I make liberal use of things like control points and sliders and will tweak just about anything that I think needs tweaking for any given image. That said, I've posted a couple of OOC B&W shots that I tweaked in Aperture, too.

I'll tell you what I told my students at MCAD, back in the days of 35mm film and darkrooms, and I think it still holds- black & white prints (or JPEGS) look best when there is actually some genuine black in them. You're paying for silver, so USE IT! I think the smae goes for digital, only now we don't have to pay for silver, only pixels.

I purchased on the outstanding results that you get with Silver Efex Pro 2, I purchase a copy and am not going home to load it. Like you I take raw photos and cannot wait to see by B&W results when I become proficient in Silver Efex Pro 2. Thank you for sharing some of your techniques with me. I wonder whether the Silver Efex Pro 2 will work with my IR photos???

I am having difficulty getting Silver Efex Pro 2 working - I am hoping tech support will get back to me. I converted a few recent photos to B&W.

    Maggie,
In my last post, I intended to, but failed to comment how much I liked your color photos. I like the colors, the composition, the expression on the models face. All the color photos were enjoyable to view.

One of the great things about the LX7 is that it lives in my purse, so I can shoot things just about anywhere, even during an eye exam:

    Mazor,

I have had the LX3 (now being used by my daughter), LX5 (sadly lost and never found) and now the LX7. I have had great photos from all three LX's. I am simply astounded from the quality of the photos that the LX7 produces. They do need a bit of PP but not much.

    Re: LX7 Images

    Maggie,

I hope that the following suggestions do not offend you. They are offered only for improving IQ when you are faced with conditions similar to what you faced when you took the last series of photos that you posted.

For the night shot of the building and moonrise , I suspect that you took the photo handheld at a relatively high ISO. While use a high ISO may work with a larger sensor camera with a fast lens, shooting at high ISO's is not a strength of the LX7. When I am faced with a static subject and a dim light situation, I either use a tripod or another means of stabilizing the LX7 and use the 2 second delay,I have found that taking night shots at ISO 80 results in high IQ photos and using a high ISO with the LX7 results lower IQ photos.

The LX7 is capable of extremely sharp closeup photos when the flower AF ring setting is used. The Amelia Pond photo and thermostat look soft and I feel it may due to using normal AF not the macro setting or taking the photo at too low a shutter speed. . Perhaps using macro focus may help.

In addition when I shoot dogs (and in your case when you shoot cats), I focus on their eyes. Sharp looking eyes make the entire photo appear sharp.

Keep posting and when you feel you have comment on any photos I post that could improve my technique, please post that suggestion.
