GRD2 Black-and-White Shots

Here are some black-and-white shots from my GRD2. I've been neglecting it for the DP1, but am learning to appreciate its capabilities, especially for low-light b&w photos.

Sometimes it's difficult to distinguish the salespeople from the mannequins.

Most of the shops were attracting only window shoppers.

A view near the main lobby.

I had a meeting at the Wynn that day (I stayed at the cheapo-cheapo Circus Circus). This was during the CTIA tradeshow, and I kept the GRD2 on my belt.

Thanks, Lili.

The problem I have using multiple cameras is remembering how they operate. If I use one exclusively for a while, I settle into thinking that's how the controls are supposed to work. Fortunately, the GRD2 is very user friendly. I just have to fiddle with it for a few minutes to recall how I've set the manual functions for the buttons and dials. From a controls and user settings point-of-view, it's my all-time favorite camera.

Agree here David, when I go from the GRD to my wifes Canon G9 I have to shift gear, and it can take me a while if there are other distractions.

My old Contax T3 is somewhat simpler to use and I can go from any digital to that in a wink. No white balance or ISO to fiddle with, at least not after you have loaded a film!

The balcony-view-shot is lovely...
So many aspects in there: Old and young, classic and modern. Like it much.

Did you add the noise/grain or is that normal for this particular camera at ISO 400?

I usually get escorted out of places like that for taking photographs, so I am duly impressed.

Helen and Klaus -- the balcony shot is my favorite, too. The ones that don't work as well seem to have the geometry imposed onto the surroundings. With the shots that work best (like the balcony), the geometry seems to flow more naturally out from the image.

Cledry -- I didn't intentionally add noise or grain, though I may have inadvertently added some when processing in Lightroom. The first six Wynn hotel images were shot at ISO 400 by mistake. Looking at the EXIF metadata, they were exposed at 1/620, 1/400, 1/70, 1/470, 1/440, and 1/290 respectively. I wasn't paying attention to the settings and could have shot at a much lower ISO setting, so don't judge the GRD2 based on those shots. The last Wynn hotel image (the one with the balcony) was shot at ISO 100 and 1/100.

A big plus for Las Vegas is the tourists taking pictures everywhere. I've never been run off when shooting there. The GRD2 is especially well suited for these kinds of shots. It doesn't look like a serious camera. Wear it on your belt, and you can quickly grab a shot and return the camera to its case without drawing attention.

Thanks David. I was just curious because it isn't bad grain like I get from my LX1; it is quite pleasing.

Here are some more GRD2 shots. The first is from a layover at the Charlotte, NC airport.

This is one of those odd corners in Circus Circus where the circus and gambling elements intersect.
