GRD2 with 40mm Tele-converter pictures

Boy, I sure do like those pictures, Mitch! Some grit, some contrast and some really nice mid-tones; they're all there.

Just a question for those people who have both the GRD II and the GX100 (I guess this is mainly Mitch), since I'm contemplating some purchases :). Why would you go out with the 40mm converter on the GRD2 rather than with the GX100? Is it the convenience of quick raw, or do you have an esthetic preference. Mitch, since you keep praising the converter, I assume it's the latter.

Apologies if this has already been discussed somewhere.

Two reasons, Sizifo. Firstly, the GRD2 prime lens is better than the GX100 zoom lens although the 40mm adapter is sometimes subject to some flare, which (apparently) is usually in the corners and hasn't bothered me. Also, with the converter the maximum aperture stays at f/2.4 while the aperture of the GX100 at 40 or 50mm is reduced.

Secondly, I think that the GRD2 files are substantially better, particularly in terms of higher contrast: as Sean Reid has written, starting with a higher contrast file means that less contrast adjustment has to be made in post-processing, which means that there is less deterioration of image quality.

Nevertheless, while the GX100 files are "softer", they usually take well to aggressive sharpening, which I find is necessary. On balance, however, I prefer the GRD2 in rendering the type of textures I like to have in photographs. You can see my GX100 shots in the following two series:

Thanks for the detailed answer. Have read Sean's review. He also mentions that GRD II with converter has less resolution in the corners than the GX, but I really doubt this is a problem in the real world. Somebody on the forum recently complained about the corner resolution of the GRD II (w/o converter), and going through my photos almost none of them had anything in the corners that would make this remotely apparent. Likely the converter will be in my possession before long.

There is almost no need to mention that the two series are astounding. Must be said that your photos have a look that can be identified from miles. Aggressive PP, not sure if it's 100% my thing, but definitely remarkable.

Deceased, but remembered fondly here...
Bad Mitch,

I just finished a little job for the local Chamber of Commerce over lunch and have already spent the loot 5 minutes ago on a GT-1 and a CV 40mm viewfinder. I like the way it draws from what you've posted here....

I'm sure you'll like it, John.

Here is the revised version of the other 40mm EFL portrait that I posted earlier in this thread. The trouble is that when one posts a picture linked from flickr it eventually, but not right away, disappears when the original picture on flickr is replaced by another version.

Hey you all.

I still didn't manage to get the GT1 in Denmark, so i have now ordered from Germany. Should recieve it in few days :)

I'm going for a weeks holiday in Budapest in the end of april.
I'll carry along only the GRD for Jpeg b/w street-photos, the GRD2 for shooting in RAW and the GW1 (21 mm) plus the GT1 (40 mm) wich can be used on both cameras.
I think I'll love not to carry the big DSLR-equipment!

I can't wait - and I undoubtedly will spam this forum with pictures from my trip :D

Have a nice day.

Hey again.

I finally recieved the GT-1 from Germany. I have only tried a few test-pictures, but it seemed allright - although there is a litte flare sometimes when using it in the sun.
And it was just in time - I'm flying to Budapest for a weeks holiday tomorrow.
I'll - as written before - bring my GRD2 for normal use in RAW - the GRD for back-up and/or b/w jpegs - and the GW1 og GT1.
So - with a hand of cards and four batteries - take care Budapest - here I come.
I'm sure you will know, when I'm back :)

Cheers
Ellemand.
