I own a NEX 5 and have today acquired a 3. When the 3 is powered down, it makes a squeak or brief high pitched sound that the 5 does not make. Is this normal?

The dust system works on shutdown. That might be what you are hearing.

My 5 emits a kind of low beep sound when I turn it off. As Terry says I think it's the dust removal system. Interesting that your 5 is silent.

That's what I'm hoping; actually the 5 DOES make a similar sound now that I listen closely, but it is much quieter. I had not really noticed it with my 5 until now.

I believe you can shut it off via a menu option, but I would just leave it on, since it is doing a useful function.
A900 with a few lenses, flashes etc.

Yup. I was initially concerned that the noise indicated some sort of problem. But it doesn't seem to be so.
