    Hi Terry
Will do - it's not small as you can imagine, but it's noticeably smaller than the Zeiss 24-70.

Here are some more with the 180 f2.8 APO
focusing is surprisingly easy - even wide open:

    with the 180 APO

    with the 180 APO

    with the 180 APO

    with the 180 APO

    with the 180 APO

    with the 180 APO

    n.b. everything is hand held.

    Hi There Terry
This should give you an idea. Apologies for the scruffy photos - bit busy this evening!

    The first shot is:
    left to right:
    Zeiss 24-70
    Leica 28-90
Sony E mount 18-55 kit lens
    Leica 21-35 f3.5 f4
    Leica 180 f2.8 Apo

This is the 18-200 E mount zoom against the 28-90 Leica.

    I hope this helps!

Thank you for this. The 28-90 doesn't look too bad although one would probably want to pair that with the 21-35 to get the right focal length coverage.

    Jono: Thanks.
Jono: Those are lovely! Based on the photos, it seems the 180 f/2.8 APO is your favorite (so far)? It has excellent color, detail, and OOF area.
Terry: "It is only money." Very sanguine of you.

    Hi Jono,

do you feel its really worth it to mount such big lenses on a Nex?

I think if I were you I would rather use them on the A77 with Leitax adapters.

And did you by any chance compare them to the Nex lenses (I dont doubt the Leicas are better but I am interested how much)
    Regards, Tom

    HI Tom
Well, actually, they handle very nicely on the NEX 5 - it's just a different way of holding it, and my left hand could do with a bit more of the action! There's a decent grip on the right, and I've found it to work pretty well. None of these three lenses are particularly big anyway.

Of course, it'd be nice to use them on the A77 - and it might come to that, but as they are ROM lenses it means a relatively expensive trip to Spain to get the mounts changed (apparently not end user work). If Leica come up with something then it's another relatively expensive trip to Spain to get them converted back again!

The A77 is altogether a faster thing . . . but if one is focusing manually, then the NEX does just as well with the focus peaking, and of course, it's the same EVF.

    all the best

    New user here:

    - The sensor miles ahead from my 10MP E-3.
    - Kit lens pretty decent, but no match for Zuiko 12-60 2.8-4.0 (24-120mm).
    - 3 days old, no lens swaps, already got dusty sensor!
    - Shooting from hip is a revelation.

Here is a sample from a trip this weekend to Paris:

    I am happy!

I second the use of the Leica 21-35...it's become my standard wide-normal, with c/y 18mm and the 12 and 15 CV's taking on the wider work. The problems I've seen with it on FF are gone, heavy vignetting and poor corner performance. I just wish it would focus a little closer, eg the chains are focused further out than I'd have liked.

    Hi There Mike
I've never used it on Full Frame - hopefully one day! Stopping down a little seems beneficial, but it's a nice lens - and reasonably sized as well.

For me, the only point of using R lenses on NEX is the zooms (if it's fixed focal length, then it's either M lenses . . . or just use the M9!)

    Hi Jono,
I used it on 1ds2 and 5D for a while hoping it might replace my 21mm c/y Distagon but it never made the grade and luckily I never sold it. I'm fascinated by the 28-90 though as the reputation is way up there and it has a great range. I'll be watching your efforts with it.. no pressure
In the mean time here are a couple from the mid range zoom I'm using, and old Tamron Adaptall SP2 35-80, soon to go up against the C/y 35-70 though (a battle it may lose).
The 2nd shot is a brick wall test of course ...

Love the brick wall . . . . it's already becoming clear that the 28-90 is quite a different thing from the 21-35 - really a different class, but of course, it's not that small.
I can imagine that the 21-35 won't make it on full frame (it even has soft corners at 21 on the NEX).

    . . . . I suspect the tamron may lose!

First I use the X10 with JPEGs. The 5N has clearly more DR. But there is no Zoom for 28-112 range at f/2-2.8. The X10 has a smaller sensor.

Note: Also changed today the shadow rendering (SOFT) of the X10 an this will make it better in the shadows.

    Hi ono,
when I had the DMR my standard combo I carried very often was the 28-90 and the 19mm prime. Excellent combination IMO.

    I can understand that . . . . I'm not sure that I'm going to go looking for a 19mm however (I think I've spent enough on R lenses for a bit).

Certainly a winner in it's class. Wonder how the camera will perform with

    Hi Jono,
I specially like #1,#2 and the last one.
Looks those R-lenses really shine on the Nex.
Motivates me to do more with my M-lenses on the Nex. (or with the M lenses on my M? )

Well, that's why I bought those R lenses - because they don't clash with my M lenses. To be honest, although the M lenses are really good fun to use on the NEX, and except for the real wides the results are fine; I'd much rather use them on an M9. Just like I'd much rather use the R lenses on a Leica solution (here's hoping).

Thanks for the kind words - it was a pretty morning and hard to go wrong - but the R lenses really are good to use on the NEX - handle nicely, and easy to focus. . . . . more to the point, unlike my previous excursions into using the 'wrong' lenses with adapters, these are NOT irritating!

I admit I have looked a bit for used 28-90s...but I would only buy if I get a very good deal.
Because in the end I hope for AF lenses if Leica comes with a solution/mirrorless camera.

Joćo: Great captures, both of them! The Backlighting in #1 works very well imho and gives a very special sentiment to this one, #2: perfect casting and timing result in remarkable tension - and a superb composition for both. Like them very much. Nice PP also.
    Best regards - Hermann

Thank you all for the kind comments.

PP is done with Lr3 + Nik Siver Efex or Nik Color Efex.

Uwe: ISO on metro shot was 500 I think (I am not at home).

I think the noise reduction apllied is Ok for web, but I might need a different approach for bigger sizes.

Lens was the kit 18-55 (the only one I have), and it was tricky to adjust all of the distortion corrections.

I have a CCTv 35 f1.7 on order (to cheap to pass on!).

But I am still conflicted to invest or not in lens for the NEX, and if I do, if I go NEX E-Mount or RF primes or legacy lens (canon FD, etc).

OTOH the little NEX has shown me that the sensor in my Oly E3 is very very dated...which is a shame since the Zuiko lenses I have (specially the 7-14 and 12-60) are quite nice optically and very rugged.

    WBR,

All the shots posted are really excellent IMO - so much so that I have ordered a 5n with kit lens, a used 16/2.8 along with adapters for my Leica M, R and Nikon lenses - I'm having a hard time awaiting their arrival.

I guess thanks are in order to all the image posters

    christmas decorations

Wyf picked up some new ornaments for the tree the other day. Etched red glass balls. Thought they looked neat with the window light hitting them.

Tamron [email protected]/5.6/75mm on a 5N from about 2 feet. Background color variation was by choice, nothing the camera did weird.

Complex cloud formations associated with an approaching cold front. NEX-5N with Contax G 28mm f/2.8 Biogon. Stitched from 4 images (handheld) in CS5 with SEPro2 for B&W conversion.

Carl, nice. Maybe I would use a warmer tone?

Thanks Uwe. Yes, I think I'll try a warm tone or a split in LR.

Here is a warm/neutral split tone:
