    Share Your A77 Images Here

    Hi There
It's nice to have a thread dedicated to a new camera - so here is one for the A77.

I'll get started with my very first shot . . . . more later!

    HI Jim
    We'll wait with baited breath!
Here are some snaps from today - fooling around with familiar subjects.

The first shot is with the SZ 24-70, all the rest are with the 135 f1.8, which is a real jewel on the A77. Exif should be intact:

    First of all it's vegetation

    . . . and now some wildlife.
I should say straight away, that catching chickens in the rough is really tricky, the CAF worked incredibly well, with much the highest number of keepers I've ever had shooting chicks.

all with the 135 - exif should be there

    . . . .. and here's Milo:

Knowing how chicks are jumping and bobbing around all the time, i would say the AF module is greatly improved to get so many keepers. Looks great. Cant wait for mine.

Now, how about some pole dancers in a dimly lit bar? We need to see the high ISO prowess of the A77 too.

    Hi Jono

These are great Jono, the CZ135 becomes a nice fast medium telephoto and shows off it's IQ really well. The close up flower images images from the CZ24-70 are really sharp with nice shallow DOF. I wonder if anyone will ever bother buying the "A99" replacement for the A900?

    Jono,

all these shots are marvelous! I am really looking forward to this camera and availability in Austria!

Especially the 135 seems to be a great combination. Cannot wait to see what the A99 will be able to deliver

    Hi Joe
I do so little action photography that it's hard to know how good it is, but it certainly seems good to me.

Maybe it'll come early - we certainly weren't expecting them until October.

    Hi Jan
They are a bit - intentional though, not the camera. For two reasons:
    1. not to blow highlights with the whites
    2. gives you a little extra shutter speed.
but perhaps I could have zapped them up a little. At any rate, don't blame the camera!

Well, I really like it - most of the time one really doesn't think about it, but it does have advantages in that you see the exposure. It's not quite so good in really bright light (but it maybe just learning to do the gain properly). I'd certainly rather have it than the OVF on most APS/c cameras . . but perhaps not over the A900!

Well, I think I will. Still, the 135 seems to be a real winner on the A77 - incidentally, only the first flower shot was taken with the CZ24-70.

I have most cameras set at -1/3 anyway - I'd rather have noisy shadows than blown highlights - just my taste though.

    Hi Jono,

the images are looking really promising. I would be interested in a comparison shot of your A900 vs. your A77 with your Zeiss Zoom 24-70/2.8 because of pixel density and DOF.

Just in case you are planning to do these kind of comparison shots anyway, I would be extremely delighted if you then could do the following comparison:

Take with each camera 2 shots. One with the Zeiss Zoom @ 35mm/2.8 and one @ 70mm/2.8. The background to the subject (i.e. flowers or people) you are focusing on should be around 2 meters away, but not more. The wilder the background with colours and shapes, the better.

With this I hope to get e better understanding of the different "artistic appearance" of DOF and background blurring (sorry for my bad English) between the 2 cameras with the Zeiss zoom at these focal ranges and apertures.

Would be interesting to see, whether the higher pixel density of the A77 has influence on the character/appearance/impression of the different background rendering fullframe vs. APS-C sensor.

    Thanks

    HI There
My problem right now is time (busy busy) - but I had already thought of doing some testing with this lens - as the mid range is fairly good I also thought of doing some comparisons with 35mm on the A77 and 50 on the A900.

I'll do my best, but it will be a day or so I'm afraid!

    HI Joe
It's okay - but I'll be happier when there is proper support within Aperture.
It does work perfectly well though - not sure that high ISO is fantastic, but there's talk of a firmware update in the near future.

Generally the colour / contrast / detail level is pretty good though.

    Hi there Mark
Great photographs - I especially like the two black and white ones.

I'm sure that you've seen this, but on the Dyxum forum there is a message saying that Pressing:

    [menu]+[movie]+[playback]

buttons simultaneously will sort out the problem.

    more elaborately:

The post was in Simplified Chinese... translation as follow...
    1. Turn off A77.
    2. Take out battery.
    3. Insert battery again.
    4. Press these 3 buttons (Menu+Movie+Ael) simultaneously.
    5. Turn on A77 and keep the 3 buttons pressed for 5 seconds. There will be a green spot "blinks" on the lower left corner of the LCD screen. Then "alpha logo" should show up again.

I guess it's worth trying each way around

    But - does it work?
    all the best

Thanks Jono Slack. I failed to reset the camera so I just went to a local Sony shop and had my a77 upgraded to 1.03 firmware. From what I heard from Sony representatives here, a major upgrade, other than 1.03 version will be available in mid Oct.
    The camera responds faster

Hi there - I guess that was the right answer - I'm glad you got it fixed - I wish I could get hold of 1.03, but it doesn't seem to be around elsewhere.

    Hi Terry
Because it'll take time, and I'm increasingly sure that it isn't relevant right now. It sounds like the firmware mid October will be a newer version.

The camera works very well . . . and . . . rumours to the effect that the cameras were being pulled from sale in the UK are apparently wrong - my dealer had quite a lot of bodies and sold them all, and as far as I've established they haven't had any back with issues.

I can sense Sony representatives both on phone or over the counter were really fed up with the complaints....after all the fix is great at least to me. The irritating "processing" waiting screen is gone forever. I experienced this sign in other camera bodies only when I shoot with NR on.

I was using a Minolta 50mm macro. It could also be the kit lens 16-50. Let me go back to lightroom for detailed.

Yes, I was using the kit lens, a surprise to me. For unknown reasons, I simply do not like the Tamron 17-50/2.8.

Ahh! do you have the kit lens? it wasn't available when I got ours.
I don't like the Tamron 17-50 either - it mystifies me why anyone does, I've tried it various times.

    Jono
My Tamron with EF mount got quirky elements and images have never been sharp....
Sony 16-50 is a real treat. Sharp at wide open with true Sony colours...and build quality even better than my old 16-80 ZA.

    Hi Mark
the 16-50 is still very much NOT AVAILABLE over here . . . but the camera's working well, despite the 1.02 firmware - no hangs or problems.

    Great stuff Jono and Mark.

That 16-50 lens looks to be a corker Mark!

I was advised by Sony UK yesterday that there is a 4 day delay before they can despatch my A77 with the 16-50. I suspect that is a customs type bureaucratic delay! I should now have it delivered to my door next Tuesday 18th October, all being well.

So long as it is with me before I leave for India at the end of October, preferably with a bit of time left to get used to the viewfinder!

Re: Share Your A77 Images Here

It's arrived complete with 16-50DT lens and firmware 1.03.

the weather had just turned horribly dark and cloudy as I had finished unpacking and gawping at it! First impressions, much lighter than the A700 and the lens is really neat. Menu system is slightly different to A900/A700 but instantly recognisable to users of those cameras, so easily set up.

Just a few images where I unpacked it, so first up is my A700 with 70-400 lens. Focus is on the SONY letters on the camera body. ISO 200. I wanted to learn just how close this 16-50 lens would focus! In fact today was all about just that really.

The second is just a yew berry with focus on the berry at ISO3200 just to see how noisy the images were at ISO 3200! second and third are the last greenhouse tomatoes focus on the nearest red tomato at ISO 3200 to check noise in a lighter scene. All at very close focus the toms were focused using the articulated LCD.....very useful indeed!

Re: Share Your A77 Images Here

Jono, Looks like it will be quite awhile longer before USA photographers will be able to post on this thread. The warehouse notified Sony Style customer service today at noon that the estimated new ship date for a77's will be 11/4/11 instead of 10/21/11. The ship date for the NEX 7 is still 11/9/11 so now I am rethinking getting the a77 being as one of the reasons I went for the a77 instead of the NEX 7 was a timing issue to get fall color shots and mating pair eagle photo's. By the second week in November I have missed those event windows anyway.

I use my Nex5 with legacy glass far more than my a33 (like 90% to 10% more) for my style of outdoor shots so I may just sell off the new sony wall chargers and new Sony batteries I got for the a77 and cancel the a77 order and go for the NEX 7 instead. It's date is only 5 days later here in the USA than the new a77 ship date

Here is one of my NEX5 shots from last Saturday...... I do like that combo of NEX and Contax G

NEVERMIND Jono...... I am totally convinced one hand does not know what the other is doing.

After two phone calls to Sony style and them assuring me the date was moved back to 11/4 my bank account just got charged by SS and the status was changed to ready to ship 10/18.

    It's coming............
