    Re: Speed booster for NEX

All this talk of customs really sucks. I ordered mine and it was here in just a few days.

Some warnings about the SB on the phoblographer site.
Jared Abrams Offers Warning to Metabones SpeedBooster Users Via Twitter

Guess this was inevitable for somebody. One of the reason I wanted a simple SB with no electric contacts.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

It's fairly easy to determine if there is a physical conflict, without going so far that the lens becomes trashed...and considering how many lenses exist, it's not realistic to expect Metabones to have tested every single one...

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Nikon made a special converter to take Nikon F mount lenses: FC-1. This was in Arri mount. 0.6X conversion factor, IIRC. Special order optics, about 10cm long and costs >US $8,000. Has this been done before? Yes. Would many afford to buy one? No.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Well, I tried my hand at something different today. All these street photos have prompted me to shoot something other then macro. So I headed to downtown Sacramento today and gave it a whirl.

All photos with NEX-7, speedbooster, and Yashica ML 28/2.8. (After sending the other ML 28mm back I finally got another one. This one is much nicer to use.)

f/otographer-I have a Yashica 28/2.8 DSB Is that about the same lens? A little newer, I believe.

Here are some from yesterday with the zoom. Nice for framing!

The Yashica ML series were the last and probably best. The YUS and DSB preceded the ML. I have the ML 24, 28, 35, 50, 28-50 and 35-70mm f3.5 one touch, fixed aperture. The 28, 35 and 50s are excellent. I am anxious to try all of them on the SB that I received this morning.

Hello Paul, long time no see
Thanks for the clarification on this! I never looked into yashica lenses that much. Which SB did you buy? For M4/3 I suppose.

    kind regards, Michiel

I haven't been able to contribute much lately as I been confined to bed for almost 8 months with a Staph infection that resulted from knee replacements. After 7 surgeries I am finally on the mend.

I bought the C/Y SB for NEX. The late version of Yashica ML 50mm f1.7 I have and tested extensively appears to be as sharp, even wide open, as the Zeiss Planar. The 50mm f1.4 is also superb. I suspect the ML 35-70mm f3.5 was the predecessor to the Vario-Sonnar f3.4. My research revealed 4 versions of the ML 35-70mm with only one being a single touch fixed aperture zoom. One of the two touch variable aperture seems to have been built by Cosina and all others by Kyocera.

I am anxious to run some trials on the ML 35-70mm and the ML 28-50mm. I suspect both will perform quite well.

I always enjoy your images; keep them coming.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Turbines beat me to it Michiel. The ML line was Yashicas top notch lenses (not counting Zeiss) while the DSB and YUS lines were a budget option. They only has a single coating whereas the ML were multicoated. You can see from the following Yashica lens list that they had different optical formulas as well.

My NEX 7 should be thanking its lucky SB stars. It was getting packed up and ready to be put on the trading block when the Speedbooster shots started showing up here.

So......thank you Vivek, f/ototgrapher, Michiel, et al, mine gets here in a few days and a certain Yashica 21/3.5 ML is getting quivery with excitement.

(and the NEX thanks you too.....)

Rich, dont sell your NEX 7! Its a great camera, especially with the SB. And like turbines I cant wait to see your results with the ML 21. I would love to have one but they are pretty pricey right now. Making do with my 28 instead. Post pics when you get them please.

Michiel, wonderful bokeh from that Meyer. I know many might say its to 'busy' but I love it when old lenses render like this. Absolutely stunning results sir.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

On a side note, the SB is now available in the Contarex mount. With Leica R, Alpa and now Contarex they are really covering the pseudo-esoteric side of lens mounts. I am somewhat surprised they released this mount instead of Minolta SR, Canon FD, Olympus OM and any number of others. They would probably sell more of those then Contarex.

These Meyer lenses are M42. Most Meyer lenses also exist in Exakta mount.

I on waffling on whether to get a Flektogon ken, mainly due to being unable to find a M42 to C/Y adapter that fits in my SB without wobbling around. I am very picky about any play in the lens area and both my old M42 adapter and a new one I ordered from the auction site are both slightly loose. Enough to annoy me anyway. The search continues and if I can find a snug adapter I will start using M42 glass again. I really love old screwmounts and I would like to get some results from my 1959 Zeiss Biotar and my Mamiya Sekor 55/1.8, both really nice lenses. If I can find an adapter that works I will look for a decent Flektogon.

I have a request. Does anyone have any of the Voigtlander SL I lenses to try on the SB? I have only just discovered these lenses and they seem to be very well made. I would like to see how the optical quality translates to the SB. Specifically the 40mm and 75mm.

Mine is slightly loose with one lens and tight with the other. So in my case it also differs per lens. Did you give all your lenses a try if they wobble around or not?

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Unfortunately Michiel my adapter is slightly loose on all my M42's. Its loose on the C/Y side and moves slightly withing the Speedbooster. Having said that, I mounted up the Biotar on the tighter of the two (which happens to be my old one) and made a few shots outside the front door. I will post those below.

Turbines, I havent used any Kipons, but they appear to be of the same Chinese stock as most of the others. Just upsold a little bit. For instance, some of their adapters look remarkably similar to the German made Novoflex adapters. I would like to know as well if anyone has used them however.

The same little guy I have been shooting for a couple of weeks now. He was much more agitated today as I was getting the camera close. I am probably going to get stung soon. All photos with the Zeiss Biotar 58/2, 1959 M42 model, with a Minolta Close Up lens No.2 attached.

    gonna get stung

    nissen bokeh?

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

The SB C/Y to NEX arrived and today was the first few hours to play. Nothing to post yet but, the Contax lenses appear more saturated and contrasty than I recall.....BUT, I have NEVER (except once or twice on my 5Dii) really shot them at their true (more or less) focal length. They have sat on m4/3 cameras.....the NEX 7......a Fuji X-Pro1.

It is really wonderful to have, in essence, a full frame lens presenting itself in full frame in its "true" focal length.

    How cool is that???

Took the SB C/Y out for a spin with the Yashica 21ML.

It's like...."Wow....I have to go back to ultra-wide school." So....if any of these really look "off".....blame the photographer.

First impressions.....center sharpness is outstanding. Shot at f/3.5-f/8. Unless indicated all images are uncroppped.

The big "phew" is that I don't have to cave in and buy the Contax 21/2.8 (yet )
Good to see you everywhere where the fun is, Rich

Does the Contax 21/2.8 not potrude to much into the adapter? I was wondering.

    Michiel,

I don't know about the Contax 21/2.8.......but the Contax 100-300mm would need some surgery in order to use it.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

I took my new Tamron SP 90/2.5 out yesterday after work and to make a long story short I am not happy with the results. Its not the lens mind you, which is in great shape and actually a wonderful piece of glass. I am very impressed with the construction and functionality of the old Adaptall macro lens. But I think it was my technique yesterday that set me off. A combination of being tired from work and not being used to using a 90mm macro lens (which is a little heavier and longer, which pushes me back further from my subject) resulted in a much lower then normal keeper rate. I salvaged a couple of shots from the whole thing and will post those below. I plan on taking the lens out again today to give it a more proper thrashing and see what results I may get.

I think both of these were shot with a 27mm extension tube. Not sure how close to 1:1 that gets me since the native macro of the lens is 1:2.

fanning to keep cool (yes, its this little guy again)

to be regarded (this might not have the tube, if so I was zoomed out)

And while dorking around outside I tried out the Biotar again in a macro setting. Salvaged a couple of shots from that one as well. I really think I was just tired.

i lost it in a dream

Not being an expert macro shooter, I can say that trying to get 1:1 with extension tubes, handheld is a challenge. The plane of focus is extremely thin and the slightest movement, either wind movement or subtle body shifts, throws it off.

The pictures you posted have an ethereal quality. Keep shooting.
