Michiel, nice work with the mirror lens. I actually have a soft spot for catadioptric lenses. This is a little off the speedbooster subject, but I was wondering if you might test your mirror lens to see if it produces the same effect as in this photo.

I have an old Makinon 500/8 and I have noticed that if I purposely de-focus tree limbs they take on an interesting hollow look. Im sure they all do it, but it would be nice to have it confirmed. It is an interesting effect and I like it quite a bit.

Back on speedboosters, I havent had much time to try out my ML Macro 55/1.4 that came in today. Just a couple of quick ones around the house. Both are straight out of the camera. So far Im liking what I see. I will have to test it in depth next week.

They all do it f/otographer and other lenses as well, I believe. Most mirror lenses are not very sharp but this Kaleinar lens is and teh 250 Rokkor mirror is as well. I had a 500 Tokina once but it had no sharpness.

Here is one with the Mirror Rokkor from the M4/3 Bokeh thread, where you can find loads of bokeh shots of mine from the past and others as well of course.
actually I am not so much into bokeh anymore these days but the Speedbooster brings it up again.

These are straight lines but with branches it will look the same.

(BTW on page 39 you can find a Biometar image of a poppy and Flektogon as well. It was part of a Lens every day project I did at the time)

And here a simular effect with an Isco lens.

Hope I did not go to far

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

I just bought an SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4 for a great price. Since I use an EF mount SB, I'll need an M42-EF adapter. Reading the reviews of some adapters on Amazon, it seems that some of them have trouble with the Tak 50 in particular. For those of you who have used this lens with an EF adapter, which specific adapter do you have?

And f/otographer, most of the times when I make posts with links to my flickr photos, I get a message saying that the post will be visible after approval from an admin. That's why the images don't show up. I'm guessing that's because I'm new to the forum.

Just a curious question. Does anyone think Metabones will update their speedbooster firmware so that Canon EF Lens can AF using the hybrid PDAF and CDAF found in the Nex 6 and 5r?

Has anyone actually used the speedbooster AF capabilities on their Nex?

On the EF17-40/4 the AF works but I don't use it as it hunts. It's not usable unless you have good contrast.

I have an EF 100mm 2.8 Macro, and AF does work with the speedbooster. However, it's probably quicker, easier, and more reliable to use peaking and/or magnification. When using AF with the speed booster, the lens will rack focus back and forth a few times, similar to using CDAF on a Canon DSLR. It takes maybe 3 seconds to lock on, so it's not all that useful.

Queen's night here. Took the NEX-6 + SB plus 2 OM lenses.

For this shot, accidentally the aperture was left at f16!

A few from the delightful OM 50/1.2. Effective f/0.9 with the superb SB. This is a stunning combo.

Nothing special, Paul. It is the cheapest EOS -> OM adapter I could find (it is made of brass) from PRC, found on eBay.

    Thanks, Slingers.

What is even more special is the OM 50/1.2. Wide open with the SB, it is just incredibly sharp. It is difficult to explain. One has to experience the shocking sharpness themselves. It is hard to believe the effective aperture is f/0.9.

These were done very fast and hand held so I dont even know if it could be considered a comparison. I will try to do something more elaborate next weekend.

    Canon 5D MarkII + Canon 28mm f1.8 @ 1.8

    Nex7 + speedbooster + Canon 28mm f1.8 @ 1.3

    Canon 5D MarkII + Canon 50mm f1.4 @ 1.4

    Nex7 + speedbooster + Canon 50mm f1.4 @ 1.0

    Canon 5D MarkII + Canon 80mm f1.8 @ 1.8

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

I had hoped to have more time to shoot today. But I had to stay at work later then planned and then I received notice my Flektagon was being held at the post office and would be available for pickup later. So I rushed out when I got home and shot some with my new ML Macro 55/4 and then made it over to the post office to pick up the Flek before they closed. I sample some shots from the Flektagon in a nearby parking lot before rushing off to get dinner.

I am very impressed with the build quality on the ML Macro 55/4. Almost all metal and it is solidly put together. The only disappointment is the 5 bladed aperture. It did cause some distracting bokeh with my normal shooting style but I will keep at it with some more outings and see how it works. Overall though it is a great lens, acceptably sharp for the most part. For the budget macro lens in the ML lineup I think it is a neat little lens. Here are some of the keepers from todays outing.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

On the other hand, I am not terribly impressed with the build quality of the Zebra Flektogon. It seems to be made mostly of plastic. Having said that, I freaking love the lens. This copy seems to be in remarkable shape for its age and even came in its original box with a matching pentacon hood, also in the original box. As I said, I didnt have a lot of time to really play with it and the conditions today were quite windy which always makes macro a chore. Thats why you wont see many up close critter shots from either this lens or the ML today. But from what I can see so far the Flektogon definitely has that special Zeiss rendering and I cant wait to use it in better conditions. Its close focus ability is amazing. I could easily see this lens staying on my camera most of the time.

As with the ML the aperture is a bit of a downer, it being 5 bladed as well. Those pentagon highlights have to be well thought out and controlled, not something I normally like to do. Hmmmmm, there is the older version of this lens with up to 12 blades. Might have to look into that. As it is, here are some of the Flektogon keepers for today. This one plays a little strange with the speedbooster in regards to bokeh. More testing needed.

    I've tried two m42 to C/Y adapters......one a $5 no-name from Chine (terrible) and a Fotodiox.....both wobble.....the Fotodiox won't even lock into the SB.

Just bought a Kipon.......lots more money.....I hope I get lucky.

    The ZS works nice though

If you do decide on a Flektogon I recommend either the original silver bodies or the later 3rd version. The Zebra (which is the second series) I purchased is a great lens but I think the 5 blades are going to drive me crazy. Just my style of shooting and all. The earlier aluminum bodied lens can possibly have the same issues all the early Zeiss aluminum bodies had, namely oil on blades and shoddy construction. But you do get many, many blades. My aluminum Biotar has oil on the blades and the focus can be stiff but it takes great photos, and thats what its all about.

The later third version (2.4) is the most sought after. Mainly due to it clearing the Canon 5D's mirror where the other two Fleks dont. Also, the 2.4 has a different optical scheme then the 2.8's, but I couldnt tell you what they changed. If you do go for a series 3 flek dont get caught up in the red MC white MC hype. My research points to the fact that there is NO difference in any of the series 3 Flektogons (the 2.4's), be it with a red MC or white MC or with chunky letters or with Electric or whatever. They are all the same lens. Just buy the cleanest one you can find.

I did find one reference that pointed to the fact that the later series 3 may actually have slightly inferior glass then the first two series. This was due to the whole Communist block thing being in full swing when the third flek came out and Zeiss had some issues getting high quality glass during this time. But having said that, if you look at photos from the series 3 there is nothing that would suggest this. Any of the Flektogons will take damn fine photographs.

And this may all be redundant if you already know all this.

Thats really weird Rich. I bought a fotodiox and it was so tight it wouldnt even go all the way on and got stuck. Luckily it has the little indentations on the side so I could put in the spanner my old adapter came with and get it back off. It was so tight that if I didnt have the spanner I dont think I could have removed it.

Just shows the tolerances on all these adapters. I am just going to keep ordering them until I find a good one. My old original one that I complained about is still the best I have found.

BTW, thanks for all the back to back shots Rawfa. Seems like the NEX/SB combo is a little less contrasty sometimes.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

After I looked at a small youtube tutorial how to change an adaptell mount on Tamron lenses
Just couldn't get the Minolta one off to put the C/Y on my just received Tamron 24/2.5

Love these two, Rich. Im a guy who does mostly color photos, but I have you thought about trying out a B&W treatment for these pictures? The color of the grass generates a great contrast with the clouds in color, but I think it could be a power photo in B&W too.

Rawfa.....that's a great suggestion. Getting late here....I'll give it a try tomorrow.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Ok, so Ive finally found some time to spend with the SB. I left home at around 6:30 am and arrived back at around 10:30am. I took the NEX7 with me along with a Canon 28mm 1.8 and a Canon 85mm 1.8 (I was using a sling pocket and by the end my back hurt from the weight). I have to say that the SB is amazing, but I would think twice about taking it to a trip that required fast shooting. Focusing with lenses that are already fast takes time and a steady hand. Enough talking now....here is my series for the day:

Nice series Rawfa! Your photographs always look like old postcards to me.

Michiel, that is a great compliment, as I always try to go for a "filmy retro organic look" (which many times turns out borderline HDRish...which most people hate).

Michiel, super nice work with that Tamron. That lens was on a list of possibles for me, and still is from your lovely shots. Nicely done. And btw, thanks for all the info on the mirror lenses. Very informative.

Rich, excellent work as well. Im with Rawfa as well, black and white would have suited that shot. I would have loved to have seen it in the High Contrast B&W mode. But as it is the colors and composition are simply wonderful. Really nice work.

Rawfa...wow. I swear to god Im gonna hack into your computer and find out your processing method. Wonderful images all around. I especially like the trees lining the road. Crazy good composition and perfect focus drawing the eye inward. I can also feel the energy from the two elderly ladies doing Tai Chi. Excellent and admirable work.

A couple of snaps from a local parade today. Flektogon zebra on SB.

"I took the time to put all this crap on, Im gonna ham it up a bit." His exact words to me after taking his photo.
