    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Not much love for the speedbooster at all recently huh. Oh well, mine is basically glued to my camera.

On a postive note, the speedbooster was mentioned as one of the innovative products of the year over at The Carmera Store in their yearly best and worst video. Check it out, some fun stuff.

Here are some recent samples. Enjoy.

    Haha, who needs an A7??

So, the A7 bug is biting after all. Went to a shop and checked it out. Very nice images from my old glass. But the new Fuji X-T1 is pushing ALL the right buttons. And I can mount up a speedbooster to it and gain that extra stop of glass that I have become very used to having.

Anyway, here are some more shots from the CY SB on my trusty NEX 7. All Yashica glass.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Hi all, took the plunge and got myself a EF to E-mount speed booster, guess it has been out for about a year now, so I managed to buy one second hand

Here it is captured with my trusty Nokia 808

Now here is it compared to my EF- emount standard metabones mark 1 adapter

As you can see the speedbooster is a thinner adapter compared to the non speedbooster EF- e-mount adapter.

The autofocus is indeed slow and very unusable for any subject movement what so ever, but if you are capturing a static subject, eg product photography, the speedbooster will accurately focus some EF Lens.

Extremely excited I take the speed booster with 24-105L IS USM for a spin on the NEX in a local park.

This is how one can mimic A7, but with a smaller footprint than an A7.

Your shots look good. The speedbooster changes the f stop by 0.72 so your effective f stop at f/1.2 should be f/0.90 but your camera may report f/1 as not all NEX's are able to display an f stop lower than one.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Thanks Slingers, I tested out my Nikkor 50mm AIS f1.4, against the Canon 50mm f1.2L and sure enough as you said the shutter speed required for the Canon was higher than what was required for the Nikkor to achieve the same exposure.

The Nikkor f1.4 will behave like a f1.0 with speedbooster, and the Canon f1.2L although displaying f1.0 as maximum aperture really is like you said f0.9.

not exactly the save FOV, but here is a shot I took with the Nikkor 85mm f1.4 AIS using speedbooster on NEX.

I think the bokeh from the Canon 50mm f1.2L is better, what do you think?

Haha, I know how you feel. The thread has pretty much died down. Shame since the product itself is great and a godsend for APSC cameras. Like I have said before the SB pretty much stays on my NEX 7.

Having said that, I will probably be adding an A7 to my stable pretty soon. I was going to go with the X-T1 but testing the two cameras has shown me that the files from the A7 are just better. At least for me. The plus side is that I can swap batteries between the A7 and NEX 7 and I think they will make a nice pair. All my E mount adapter will work on both as well.

BTW mazor thats some lovely L glass you have there.

Here are a few more SB examples from the NEX 7 and Yashica ML 28/2.8. This is from a trip last weekend to the coast with my daughter.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Here is more Camera comparisons showing a 1D2, an E-M1 and the Nex 5r with speed booster.

Truth be told although the NEX is by far the smallest body of the lot, the E-M1 although larger is lighter with the 12-40mm 2.8 pro lens attached. The Canon 50mm f1.2L and vertical grip makes the NEX into a very solid heavy piece of kit. The 1D2 by far is the heaviest, but the lovely Canon ergonomics makes it a pleasure to use.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

thanks, it is my mates new lens! Tried it out on the speed booster on NEX, and it works exceptionally well. Possibly too well, as the focus sharpness can be a little too good, and the oft holga effect may be lost.

NB if anyone gets a Petzval and mounts it onto an electronic adapter, it will short out the contacts!, which in this case prevented the shutter from releasing. Putting a bit of insulating tape resolves this issue.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

as ken_vs_ryu said, and remember you will lose any kind of infinite focus by using this type of macro adapter.

Basically using this adapter is the same as trying to mount M glass onto a DSLR. The same limitation applies, except when used on a Speed booster adapter, you will get 1 stop extra light advantage.

The disadvantage is you can only do macro (closeup) shots.
You won't even get close to infinity focus.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Recently I acquired a Metabones speedbooster for my Olympus OM lenses.

Today I took it for a spin with my Zuiko 24/2.8 and can say I'm very happy with the performance. I tested some of the same scenes vs. my Minolta MC 17/4 and both center as well as corner sharpness is better. Even comparing wide open it still shows better center sharpness and contrast, so that's comparing f2.0 with the speedbooster to f4.0 of the Minolta lens. So I'm a happy camper, and the MC 17 will probably see little use until I get a FF E-mount camera.

    1: Water lilies and reflection

    2: Yellow meadow

    3: Fishing pond

All at f5.6 setting on the lens, which makes it f4.0 with the speed booster.

How many SB users have checked infinity focus at larger apertures? I have four Metabones boosters and all of them required a good deal of adjustment to get right.

None needed in my case. As I might have mentioned here earlier, I was shocked to find out that EOS lenses are much faster than any other. For example, the Canon EF 50/1.8 is faster than the Planar ZM 50/1.4 or the Olympus OM 50/1.2 (all "mint" samples- all with the speed booster).

How do you measure "faster" ? By using fixed ISO, or fixed shutter speed and considering the variation of the other parameter at max aperture ?

In this case, depending on the metering mode the importance of vignetting could explain part of the variation ? For instance, center weighted or spot metering in the center of the frame could change the results of a strong vignetting lens..

Manufacturers could use spot metering in the center to measure the max aperture when they know that their lens exhibits strong vignetting (are there any guidelines the manufacturers have to apply when evaluating how fast one lens is ? )

    Which metering mode ?

Could vignetting play a role, supposing that you aren't using spot metering in the center ?

Is the Canon exhibiting a particularly low vignetting at max aperture ?

NB : it is not new that manufacturers are cheating somewhat when it comes to focal length or max aperture.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

In the lenses mentioned, the ZF 50/1.4 and the OM 50/1.2 have more fall off than the EF 50/1.8. I did not say that Zeiss or Oly cheated w.r.t the apertures. Rather, the Canon EF lenses have higher transmission- f/1.8 is even faster than the f/1.2 from another maker. May be they calibrate their meters differently.

    No spot metering.

Yes about 3/4 turn CCW was about what each of mine required. Took a good bit of trial and error testing to get each one exactly right.

I only had to fine tune the EF-Emount speedbooster for my Elmarit R 19mm. The rest of my Canon, Olympus OM, and nikkors all could focus to infinite without adjustment.

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

pegelli, the Metabones speedbooster works particularly well with Olympus OM lenses. Infact, I found the peformance of OM lenses better using speedbooster on my 5r than using them on an A7s!!

I too have the 24mm f2.8, and that lens is a very good performer wide open. Lately I acquired a OM 35mm f2.0. It is my current favorite lens

    Re: Speed booster for NEX

Thanks Mazor, so far I've been very happy with my speedbooster for OM lenses.

Yesterday I did a little testing of my OM Zuiko 50/1.4 + SB vs. the Voigtlander Nokton 35/1.2 II. Exposure wise the difference between the (theoretical 35/1.0) of the boosted Olympus and the Nokton is negligible, for IQ aspects see below.

Here's the comparison (unedited in Lightroom, only WB set the same for all shots), both wide open at 50 cm distance (MFD for the Nokton, very close to MFD for the Olympus)

Olympus 50/1.4 + Speedbooster at f1.4 on the lens (so effective f1.0)

    Nokton 35/1.2 II @ f1.2

Here the main flower looks a bit sharper, but that's mainly because the plane of focus is slightly deeper into the petals vs. the boosted Olympus version)

    And a slightly different view
Olympus 50/1.4 + Speedbooster at f1.4 on the lens (so effective f1.0)

    Nokton 35/1.2 II @ f1.2

Conclusion is that there is very little difference between the sharpness of the speedboosted Olympus and the Nokton, but that the bokeh of the Nokton is slightly smoother. Also the Nokton has slightly more contrast "out of the box", but nothing a little PP can't solve.

And just for fun, here's a shot with the 24/2.8 + SB wide open at MFD (25 cm). Amazing sharpness, contrast and bokeh not even too bad (considering the very busy buxus hedge background).

I've borrowed a Zuiko 35/2 once and liked it a lot, but since I already have 4 good 35's I didn't want to add a 5th to my collection. However if I ever run across one at a good price I'll probably cave in
