I was shooting some test shots (sturdy tripod, self-timer, fast shutter speed), and f/5.6 seemed like the best performance overall for this lens on the A7R.

For an oddball comparison, here is the Olympus E-M1 and Oly 17/1.8 at f/4, which seemed like the best aperture overall for that lens.

Interested to hear everyone's thoughts about the level of performance from the Sony lens here.

Interesting, Amin. Thanks for sharing.

The A7r shows incredible detail in the high frequency wooded areas, but interestingly it gets pretty soft in the upper-right corner. The lower corners appear to fall off a bit as well, but not as much (although it's hard to tell on lower-right). EDIT to add: Lower-right corner does look rather softer than lower-left (in jpeg). It generally seems to be a bit soft on the entire right side. I have a Mamiya 45mm that does that on the left side at anything wider than about f/8.

The Oly looks a little more consistent across the frame, better in the lower corners, but obviously not as much information in the detailed areas.

I've only looked at the jpegs, haven't downloaded the RAWs yet.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your thoughts, Dale.

I thought the Sony delivered a pretty stunning level of detail thoughout most of the frame, especially in the center but not bad at the edges either.

The top right corner is as you point out much softer, which is probably decentering for my lens but hard to say when the top left corner doesn't contain much detail.

Overall I came away thinking the lens is a very good performer and that this sensor will expose any weaknesses in lens performance.

I was surprised the Sony had this much light falloff at f/5.6.

The Olympus turns in a better extreme corner (based on the one corner we have to evaluate here), but it can't keep up in most of the frame.

I didn't compare the near/lower corners because there's not too much detail there, and Olympus has more DOF at f/4 than the Sony at f/5.6.

Amin, I agree. The detail recorded/communicated by the Sony is quite remarkable. I noticed the light fall-off as well, but wasn't certain of the scene. One sample isn't a lot to go on. :)

DoF was a consideration on the foreground (lower corners) as well with an aperture of f/5.6. My thoughts were "indeterminate" there.
