    28mm for Sony A7S

Hello to all and greetings from Finland!

I've been following this excellent forum for a long time, but only today I decided to join myself

I bought myself a Sony A7S few weeks ago and so far I have only two lenses, both "normal": The superb Sony 55mm 1.8 and a Helios 44/3 with some funky swirly bokeh.

Now I'm after a 28mm lens and after reading various threads from various forums I'm almost certain that my next lens will be Contax zeiss 28mm 2.8 MM or Zuiko 28mm 2.0 MC, but...WHICH ONE? With Nikon D700 I had Zeiss ZF 28mm 2.0 which was a nice lens, but I have zero experience of Zuiko lenses.

I would love to hear an opinion from someone who owns or have owned both these lenses. I'm open to other suggestions as well. Of course there's the Sony Vario-Tessar 16-35mm but right now it's too expensive option for me.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best regards, Jyrki

    Re: 28mm for Sony A7S

    Hello Jyrki:
I'm not sure how soon you wanted to buy this new lens, but Sony stated that they wanted to release for purchase in March 2015 an FE 28 f/2 lens. that would probably be your best bet for an A7/R/S camera. At least that's what I hope to use.

    Regards,
    John

I have been using M Rokkor 28/2.8 (on an A7r). It should do better on the A7s.

Normally the Zuiko's are pretty good.

    I don't have experience with a 28, but the 24/2.8, 35/2, 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 85/2 and 135/1.8 are all wonderful little and sharp lenses..

I also have the M-rokkor 28/2.8 which performs well on the A7s even though it suffers from the white spot issue around the edge of the front lens element.

I have the OM 28/2.8 and the 28/3.5. The M-Rokkor 28/2.8 still has a edge over these.

Since price does not appear to be a consideration (where the OM 28/2.8 or the f3.5 win hands down) here, I would prefer the Rokkor.

Don't count out the native Sony options! The 28-70mm is an excellent kit lens, and quite affordable. Also, if you can wait, Sony will be producing a 28/2 sometime early next year.

    Re: 28mm for Sony A7S

I just brought out the old CY 28/2.8 Distagon. It is a nice manual focus lens, with beautiful bokeh (when you focus close enough for there to be a lot of bokeh at 28mm, some CA at the edges (corrected easily in LR or C1), but it's not as sharp at the edges and corners as the 21/2.8, as the Zeiss mtf charts suggest and examples demonstrate. I bet it would work well on the A7. Here's a quick snap wide open (mounted on a Canon 1DsII) at the near focus distance of 10":

I keep waiting for there to be a 28 that works on the Sonys that matches the Summicron. (I know, I keep saying that...)

    Best,

Like most recommend there are a plethora of adaptable options. Most SLR lenses work as intended. Your best bet is to wait on the native 28/2 as you will have two teleconverter options to obtain the 21mm focal length or a 16mm fisheye look... if you can holdout until spring. If not then there's the wider native zooms that all cover 28mm. Any of the mentioned options will work for most people.

Thanks Vivek - the price differential does seem dramatic - I just found the first version (£299) and the second (£1099)

Second version is the benchmark for 28mm, Jono. The price you got, if the lens is in good conditions, seems good. But... yesterday I made a fast test against the 16-35, it is more brilliant, but the zoom is very near.

Hi Sergio - thank you - I haven't bought either (I actually thought that the 24-70 was reasonable at 28mm too).

    Hi Jono,
The 16-35mm FE zoom is really pretty good, in fact I now prefer it to my Contax C/Y 28mm Distagon, after I re-did my wall test at 28mm F8.
(I have no experience with the Leica 28mm)..Cheers Barry

You might also consider the Leica R 28mm. You can pick them up for about $500, and they work great on the a7S. Here's shot on another thread

I have the V1 28mm Elmarit R and it produces soft edges and corners on the A7r. My tiny 28mm M-Rokkor is in perfect condition (no white spot disease) and is also the best performing 28mm in my arsenal. Sharp across the frame with no smeary edges and corners. Contrast is a bit on the low side but I like the look.

Jyrki, I own the Contax Zeiss 28mm f/2 Distagon and love it on my A7S.

This is a lens well worth your time to consider also when making your choice. I've got a short Video using this lens, and more image samples here, for those interested:

The one stop faster Hollywood version definitely has merit over my F2.8 version.
A pretty hard to find lens nowadays...It renders rather nicely wide open.

    Re: 28mm for Sony A7S

Wow. Thanks a a lot guys! That gave me plenty to think about. M-Rokkor might obviously be something to consider as well.

Hollywood Distagon would be nice, but quite big even without an adapter and not so cheap either -there is one for sale at Ebay Italy for 660 euros which is the cheapest offer I found.

Maybe -as some of you suggested- I should hold on and wait for the native E-mount option. I didn't know it's going to be released in march already and that's why I've been looking for other options. I just feel so limited without a 28mm lens Maybe I should get some real cheap manual lens (Zuiko 28 F3.5 maybe) and use it until the Sony arrives.

Anyways, many thanks to you all!

    With kind regards, Jyrki

Not sure if it caught your attention but the Minolta AF 28/2 is really excellent and gives you fast AF with the LAEA adapter. I'm doubtful whether the new Sony is going to render as beautifully as the Minolta does. I'm putting mine up on the sale block only because I decided to go smaller with the Contax G 28mm on TechArt. I just can't justify two 28mm lenses.

    I own 3 Zuiko lenses.
    2.0/24mm, 2.8/28mm and 3.5/135mm
All are good, but don´t have a modern look.
The focus adjustment is very short, too short for me personally.
But, it's a matter of personal taste.
I Like it more like my Nocitlux or 1,4 / 75mm

-> Open each pic (a7r) in a own tab for higher resolution.
The 24mm is open very soft, but has a nice bokeh.

    Stopped down to f8

The 28mm is good, cheap and compact. I use it not so often.

The 135 is very compact and the imaging performance is similar to Leica M 2,8 / 135mm.

Hi and happy new year from the OP!

After a long consideration I decided to purchase a Zuiko 28mm F2 and have been very happy with the lens so far. It's not tack sharp wide open (with a little glow also) but I like the look WO and it is plenty sharp after stopping down.

While searching information about the Zuiko 28 I stumbled upon a review of the Zuiko 100mm F2. After reading more and seeing sample pictures taken with the lens I just had to buy it and what a lens it is!

Plenty sharp WO with just beautiful bokeh -It's the best portrait lens I have ever had. Well the 75mm summilux M was magical also and I still regret selling it, but I like the 100mm focal length better for my style of shooting. Zuiko also balances perfectly with A7S.

Hi. Yes, I'm sure those minolta lenses are great, but for an autofocus 28mm I decided to wait for a native E-mount Sony lens, which should be released in march. Zuiko 28mm was also a much cheaper option because with Minolta I should have bought a Sony LAEA3 adapter also.

It is a biogon design and at least my copies perform poorly in the corners and edges on both my A7r and A7II. I have both the original that was used on a TechArt AF adapter and a modified M mount version used with the Phigment adapter. Very sharp on center but smeary edges and corners. Too bad because I love the small size.

I have the the Leica R PC 28 2.8SA that I used on my A7r and will soon use on the A7II once I get it. Superb lens and as a PC lens has shift function.

    Re: 28mm for Sony A7S

Quite a few 28s are decent when focus is closer. Very very few perform as they should at infinity with distant objects to compare center to edge. A7s is better, but seems still to have some issues this way.

These issues made me buy an M9, which I love, and now I plan to send in my A7 to have the sensor stack replaced with a thinner one.

I'm still looking for a nice one.

While waiting for the new Sony 28/2 lens, which shouldn't be to expensive, you could try the Konica AR 28/3.5. It is not fast but very sharp, great colors and not expensive.
The last 7 element variation is considered to be the best variation of the Hexanon AR 28 mm / F3.5. A metal lens just before they went to the plastic 5 element version.

How do i find out if it is the 7 element, Michiel (apart from trying count the reflections)? Serial numbers? I have a 28/3.5 Konica (55mm filter thread) somewhere.

I haven't read the posts above here, but my experiences with the Nikkor 28mm f/2.0 have been great lately, even wide open (I use it on a D810). The OM Zuiko 28mm f/2.8 is also good, as is the f/3.5 version.

Of course, if size isn't a problem, there are other 28 mm lenses available....

Thanks Bill. Which lens is this? How does it perform?

    With best regards, K-H.

On this page under you see three in a row. It is the one on the left. That's the one I have.

It's a Mamiya 28 mm f4.5. medium format lens I normally use on my Phase One camera. But as I have a Fotodiox adapter I can use any of my MF lenses on the A7 series cameras.

The good news is that on the a7 you're only using the centre "sweet spot", but the bad news is that as it's an electronic aperture, you can only use it wide open! In practice I don't use it on the a7 because I find the FE 24-70 OSS perfectly adequate at 28 mm for my purposes. I just posted the pic for fun.

However, I do use the Mamiya 150 mm f2.8 on the a7 and the results are stellar - it's my sharpest MF lens and using the centre alone makes it flawless.

    Cheers,
    Bill

    Re: 28mm for Sony A7S

One of the best 28mm you could buy today is still the Nikon 28mm 2.8 AIS. Superb lens which is hard to beat. Even Zeiss can't touch it!

Jyrki, why is CZ 28/2 ZF no longer on your radar? It's great performer right from f/2.0.

Hi. Yes, it is a great lens (I had it at some point with my D700), but as the Sony native mount 28mm is to be released soon I didn't want to spend so much money on a manual 28mm and therefore bought the Zuiko 28mm 2.0.

    Best regards, Jyrki
