    Guy,

That picture is sacrilegious ! I had a Steinway AIII 1927 and if anyone put anything on top of it I would have killed them.

My friend who sells pianos and quite often to people just looking for decoration jokingly asks if they want the strings or not

I did buy from Amazon actually. Biggest reason, easier return policy. But than I bought my 16-35 from B&H . No tax

    I use both

Well, you pick your battles. My wife insists on putting family photographs on top of our 1898 Steinway D . Given that she didn't complain (much) about me buying the monster, I let it go. Yes, it gets played every day. (A big A from 1927 sounds like a lovely piano! What happened to it?)

OK, it's an A7II thread. Mine is arriving today and I plan to do a 28mm FoV shootout comparing the A7II with the 16-35/4, kit zoom, and CY 28/2.8 (and 24-70/4 when it arrives), E-M5 with Panasonic 12-35/2.8, M9 with 28 Cron, and IQ140 with SK35XL. Stay tuned. Heck, might throw in the Canon 24-105/4L for fun.

    Stay tuned,

    HI Matt
If you still have your A7 I'd be fascinated to see a comparison between it and the A7ii for trickier lenses.

My 16-35 arrives today as well. Planning a full test on it. Good luck Matt

I bought it mostly for PR work and the A7II but if it plays well than it will get more serious workouts with the A7r

    Re: New A7II Users Reports

    Jono,

Sorry, I never had an A7. I handled one at the 2013? NY Photo Expo and it jumped right out of my hands. I'm happy to try the A7II with a bunch of M glass - I have the CV15, Zeiss 21, Zeiss 25, 28 Elmar(it?) (old), 28 Cron, OLD 35 Cron (original equipment on an M2), CV 40, a bunch of 50s (V2 Lux, pre-Asph Lux, Cron Asph) and a 75 Cron, but you probably have those covered and an A7II as well.

I fear the 28mm FoV is the weak spot in most modern systems, and it's my favorite, so I'm checking it first. The next shootout will be the portrait range - 75 Cron vs. Canon 85/1.2L.. I could never focus the 75 Cron on the M9, so looking forward to the A7II in that regard.

    Best,

    Matt

    Hi Matt
I'll be interested, especially in the dreaded 28 ' cron ( I don't have one of those). It looks to me like it might have improved since the A7 (which was why I asked). I've tested the 35 ' Ron and the WATE. I thought I might give it a spin with the 28 elmarit Asph and the 35 FLE today.

    Re: New A7II Users Reports

    Jono,

Sure, I'll try the 28 Cron on the A7II, but I'm not expecting much joy there. Ron Scheffler has a pretty thorough set of examples showing how badly it does on an A7s.

I'll bring you my 28 Cron to try for yourself, along with that lovely 21mm pre-asph beast

(would love to try out the 21mm SA as well, but scared to mount it, lol)

I would dump all the over priced and underwhelming Leica M lenses before the bubble bursts.

AF sucks with all them as well.

    Hi Matt,
I will talk to you later, for your test you can use my A7, I also have the minolta 28 mm f2 which is supposed to be one of the best lenses Minolta ever made. I also have the A toE adapter.

Leica M lens aficionados, the M-Rokkor 28/2.8 performs the best and beats the 28/2 summicron hands down. No smearing and no corner issues.

    Hi Manouch!

Another fine 28 would be welcome! I've never been quite happy with the CY 28/2.8, but perhaps that's just in comparison with the other lenses in that lineup.

Is that the MF 28/2 Minolta or the later AF Alpha mount 28/2?

    Best,

The CY 28 2.8 was really never the best one the F2 was but it has some field curvature to it. But it was called Hollywood because of the fall off.

There are people waxing lyrics about it.

There seems to be a new E mount 21mm lens: First images of the FE 21mm f/2.8 lens made by Zhongyi. | sonyalpharumors

Michiel's photos with the Contax 24-85 are also compelling. Of course, we're all making a lot of judgements based on (very good) web resolution samples.

Matt, There were many lines of Contax. Contax G, C/Y Contax and Contax N (excluding the Medium Format Contax lenses).

The Hollywood classic belongs to the C/Y category.

The 24-85 Zoom is from Contax N line. Michiel is a good photographer, has a steady pair of hands and does not mind the rain to capture all those wonderful images (I live here and I know how the weather is).

    Vivek,

Thank you. I'm aware of the different lines, but (possibly incorrectly) don't associate them with quality differences.

I understand that the equipment only gets one so far (and not very far, at that).

I to have this lens but I wouldn't say it doesn't suffer from smearing on the A7 or A7II especially wide open. It is quite a lot better on the A7s especially wide open but is quite low contrast and certainly doesn't have the same 'look' as the 28 summicron asph which on the leica M is just wonderful but unfortunately is just awful on all A7 A7II and the A7s

No smearing. Check the adapter you are using.

FWIW, I have compared the M 28/2 and the M Rokkor 28/2.8 side by side on the MM. No differences to report!

"Hollywood" f/2 looks like a short tele. Super cool lens, but I sold it for some reason.

    Anytime, Lou!

BTW, you are one of the people I keep at a high esteem. Because of loyal supporters like you, Leica is in business and I get to enjoy the MM.

FWIW, I have compared the M 28/2 and the M Rokkor 28/2.8 side by side on the MM. No differences to report!
I'm using the Voigtlander close focus adaptor and another Chinese one and all other leica lenses work as expected so I really don't feel this is question of the adaptor but I will test again

I have the Contax 28-85 f3.3-4 Vario Sonnar: the poor man's Leica 28-90. I haven't tried on the Sony yet (it does well on the M 240), I shall have to dig through my Adapter chest and see if I've got the right one.

    Just this guy you know

David, If the Leica M lenses (wide ones, especially) smear then the adapter makes no difference. In case of the M Rokkor 28/2.8 (also the 40/2), the close focus adapters pose real problems. Some of the cheap Chinese adapters (they have become really excellent of late!) do wonderfully well. Maximum clearance at the end of the adapter is the one to look out for. Also, let me add here that when looked at from the rear (what the sensor sees), my adapter mounted M Rokkor shows no shiny bits. This helps with the contrast and unexpected flares.

BTW, what is the preferred adapter for Leica and/or Canon lenses for the a7II?

    Re: New A7II Users Reports

More worryingly the IBIS mechanism has appeared to stop working all the time on mine. I thought this was a problem on Sunday and took the camera back to the store but of course it worked fine again when there. It is when using the adaptor that it doesn't seem to kick in all the time. If I mount the FE55 or 35 it works OK but not all the time with the adaptor. I can here it kicking in at start up and if I hold the camera to my ear I can hear a slight whirring but turning it on and off in the menus makes no difference to the visible camera shake.

Did you enter the focal length?

Have tried with my Chinese adaptor which is pretty well blacked out but can't really see any difference. Thanks

Well, intermittent problems are the hardest.
Can you exchange the camera for a new one?

That's one reason I prefer to buy from amazon.
It's easy with them to exchange an iten.
    With best regards, K-H.

I was going to on Sunday but it had started working again and I had it all set up with a GGS screen protector as well so was hoping for the best. Anyway I certain they will but will they have another one? Of course it seems to have woken up again!!

Clean all your electronics contacts. Which adapter are we talking about
Photography is all about experimentation and without it you will never learn art.

It's funny: I've often avoided 28mm EFoV for one reason or another, but I did some testing with the Color Skopar 28mm f/3.5 on the M9 (using lens code 11606) and A7 recently. I found that I liked how it rendered quite a lot. There is a small amount of color shifting visible, sometimes (can't remember which camera...), but otherwise it hits the numbers for me.

But I remain more of a 35mm EFoV person. :-)
