    25mm E-mount lens for $15 (it's a Holga!)

I was looking at pinhole offerings and stumbled across this on eBay. I think I'll invest the fifteen dollars to see what it can do.

Post up some examples. I am not too hopeful, but I usually lose a lot more money on my ideas.

Indeed! I've had lens caps that cost significantly more than that.

Had a look at his listing. He sells in many categories. Radios, fashion and sex toys to name a few. Too bad you already spent all your money on that expensive lens.

One of those in mFT mount came with the Olympus E-PL1 I bought for about a hundred dollars the year before last. My only problem with it is that it's too sharp... !

    Re: 25mm E-mount lens for $15 (it's a Holga!)

So a Sony body cap is cheaper by $10: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Body_Lens.html

But I figure this is at least a $10 more useful body cap One upside for us on the lens above is it's designed for M4/3 sensor E mount, not the full-frame. So it will prolly have significant falloff and loss of resolution, and being a decent wide focal should crop nicely to square for a vintage vignette look

And no way I'm getting rid of the Mitakon. It performs SUPERBLY well on the Sony wide open in the typical light and shooting distances I will be using it at thank you very much!!! Taking the thread a bit off topic, but not all lenses work well when adapted to the Sony -- some M lenses come to mind, ahem -- but this one is designed for it, and works very well!

Some examples of the Holga 25mm toy/pinhole lens, taken with E-PL1 (no cropping, no alterations, straight from JPEGs, all at ISO 1600, etc):

Above photo flipped right to left for correct orientation...

    A fun little thing.

Godfrey, that is the same lens we ordered, but I don't think we can call it a "pinhole" if it has glass But regardless, I do like the look (and your images!), and imagine the look on full frame cropped square -- to your full width in both directions -- and I think it could be cool!

And then I just bought some other weird stuff to mount to the A7r too, cost a little bit more than the Holga lenscap though -- stay tuned

Absolutely true ... It's essentially a zone plate with a large diameter central pinhole behind a single element, plastic lens. Pretty clever way to make a "fast" lens that performs remarkably well for almost nothing. :-)

It's fun, but don't expect top notch quality on the mount... !

The super-elastic-bubble-plastic Holga 25mm lens arrived today. It's everything you might expect for US $15.

These are from the A7R, set to APS-C crop mode. (maximum vignette correction applied in LR, but it didn't help much.)

    Re: 25mm E-mount lens for $15 (it's a Holga!)

Godfrey's right -- it's too sharp. We need to figure out how to decenter the lens and add some light leaks

Maybe a very slight Scotchbright scrub pass on the plastic element? Or a spritz of hairspray?? Or maybe a dab from Q-tip soaked with acetone???

I feel your pain! Then I thought how bad could it be? It's less than $20 and I just spent that at lunch. So I broke down and ordered one; still don't have the guts to tell Sandy

I bought one. It was a bit too late to realise that it was for APS-C (NEX). No harm done, I will give it to my son for his NEX-5N.

While being awestruck by this (and the mistake with the formats), I discovered that none other than Nikon has a fantastic product that will turn any lens into a Holga, namely the D750.

[Google D750 spits out fantastic Holgaish images]

A bit pricey (2099 Euros) but I am going to get one soon (they are threatening a fix, so I need hurry before they mess it up), seriously!

Aren't you the guy who, just three days ago in the 'A9: Coming Soon to You' thread, posted that you were going to take a break from the forum for a few months because of all the troll posts?
    Just curious.

A quote from elsewhere about the D750 flare from a Nikonista changed my perspective:

In the past, consumers simply learned the limitations of the goods that they bought and devised ways to get around them – now we seem to see an increasing bunch of litigious cry-babies!

When the NEX-5 came out, I fashioned this "thing". Fixed aperture and can be focused from infinity to ~10cm. Vignetting and color drift are plenty (it got spoiled with the later generation NEX', unfortunately). FWIW, it does very well in IR.

Mike, From a Rollei 110 (Rollei 110 Variations).

[The bits needed: A NEX to C-mount adapter, a C mount extension ring, a C-mount to M10 adapter.]

That will cover the whole frame.

35mm and up (for a Tessar) would cover the FF. I have a prewar, uncoated 3cm f/2.8 Tessar (from a Robot camera) that almost covers at infinity.

I mounted an 18/2.8 in C mount (for tiny format, G1) a while ago and have posted about it there. That one illuminates APS-C. The 50/2.8 might also do that. There is even an adapter available for them now!

My Robot Tessar 3cm f/2.8 with a proper adapter:

Actually illuminates the whole frame at infinity, wide open and covers it when stopped down.

That sounds like a fun little diversion. I'll have to get one of those adapters. (I've got a couple of the Pentax 110 lenses in the 'museum'.)

Thanks for the idea! I picked up the Fotasy adapter. Frankly amazed at how good these minuscule lenses are.

My pleasure, Mike. . Perhaps, an A6000 is on your radar now?

No, I prefer full-frame cameras. Maybe an A9 though!?

    Re: 25mm E-mount lens for $15 (it's a Holga!)

Okay. My lens arrived today and I just had time to play around with it. It's late, and so the only light I have is in my house, and I just took this snap in the TV room. And as you can see, I can happily say my lens is not like yours . It's not sharp, it does not have that massive vignette, and it renders a lot like I hoped it would!

This shot is handheld at 1/8th, ISO 6400. There's more to the story that will come tomorrow after I've had time to shoot it in daylight, but I wanted to get this up tonight so all you that rise so much earlier than I do on the West coast can have time to noodle over it a bit. Here is a biggish tidbit for you:

This image is FULL FRAME from the A7r, as shot except for converting it to monochrome since color was all squarked by artificial light:

And here is another FULL FRAME A7r shot into a mirror. I am about 2 feet from the mirror, so net of me 4 feet from the camera. It is about a 25 or maybe a tad wider... This is an in-cam A7r jpeg, only downsized to 1200 px for web:

Yes, it's got a wee bit of pincushion. And I love that too! Heck, I may enjoy this lens more than the Mitakon!

Okay, one more tidbit for you -- I did do a teensy-weensy modification to the lens

Just for giggles, here are the above images cropped square -- which is how I planned to use it, emulating the 120 square Holga look. Well okay, 24MP of Holga-esque look I might need to actually add a bit of vignette for the final effect I'm after, but it is surprisingly close as is! I need to shoot it more in real light and situations, but I am pretty stoked on the possibilities it's showing here. More tomorrow!

It's a grand little plastic, fantastic picture machine.
Did you excise the diffusion plate?

I got a new el cheapo lens today too: an Olympus 9mm f/8 Fish-eye Body Cap Lens for the E-PL1 and E-PL7. But it's a wee, five-element lens with real optical glass... :-)

This image is FULL FRAME from the A7r
How can there be so much difference in frame coverage? What did you do to yours? Did you take out the zone plate?

    You guys nailed it.

Carefully remove the little plastic aperture plate over the rear element. It is thin plastic and glued in. I used a small spring hook threaded carefully into the main aperture hole and pulled it out. A hook made from a paper-clip should do it.

Presto, now all of the lens aberrations can get through to the sensor, as well as the full image circle. And we perhaps also gain another stop in the process.

Just checked the tracking on mine, looks like it could be here sometime within the next 4-days. Then I'll have to confess to the boss I bought another lens. Wish me luck.

Jack, so you're saying to remove the plastic plate on the rear? Again, what does that do to improve the quality (I'm dense this morning). Also I guess it voids the $15.00 warranty...

    Don,

If you look at Mike's pics above, you'll see a very heavy vignette and relatively sharp performance, and he posted those from APS-C format crop in his A7r. If you look at mine, they are FULL frame 35 from the A7r, show less vignette than APS-C and then a sharpness and falloff performance are visible, more gradual, and what we generally associate more with Holga/Lomo optics. The lens comes with a plastic rear aperture plate with "sink strainer" soft holes around the center aperture. The only difference in Mike's shots and mine are I removed that aperture plate to get the full image circle (and all optical aberrations) to the full frame sensor. And yes, I'm certain it voided the warranty, but OTOH I saved the aperture disc and could glue it back in at any time -- though my guess is I won't be doing that ever

    Hope that clarifies,
    Jack
