    I'm waiting for "the one" super camera:
    - 50MP
    - IBIS
    - built-in 8K recording
    - better than A7s level ISO range

    ;-)

    It's the slow season over at SAR. He needs to fill up the empty space with something that looks like a rumor. Personally, a full frame AX camera that has extremely good AF would be interesting. But 18 megapixels would be plenty. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who would love the 50 megapixel camera but after owning the A7S for a while now I realize that the cameras are plenty good enough for pictures of static objects taken by me.

    Regards,
    John

    Just give me a A7II with either a 36mpx or 50mpx and I'm won and done. I'm EXTREMELY happy with this A7II know just give one with a bigger sensor and uncompressed raw files.

    Whatever comes from Sony, it will have only a tiny affect on the quality of our work, if any.

    A monochrome sensor from Sony would be an incredible turn of events and, for me, would be far more exciting that a crazy pixel count. Better still, they should develop a 50MP sensor for Leica M so we can hook up those incredible wide angles to it

    Oh goody, the A7r will drop in price.

    The problem with all this resolution is I will have to lose weight.
    At 50 Mpickles here is too much detail of the photog in reflections.

    BTW: I wonder what lenses users will plan to use on this.

    Crap, now we'll have to wait longer for more primes for the first gen A7! Seriously, tech is cool, but Sony needs to get more FE primes that can supplement the already outdated A7, instead of releasing so many similar cameras.

    I suspect the 55FE will be up to the task as well as the Sigma Art's, A-mount Zeiss lenses, and A-mount Sony G's. Perhaps the Loxia's, the new 35 Distagon, Sony G 90 Macro, and 28/2 will as well.

    Results will tell with the rest of FE lenses but most of the zooms seem to struggle on the A7r now.

    It's a bigger jump from 24 to 36 but a smaller one from 36 to 50. Not sure how that works but something I read from some internet pontif mouthpiece. Lol

    Okay, I've been cleaning out the liquor cabinet of the minimally filled bottles this evening, so my thinking may be slightly impaired. But that aside, what lenses will one utilize on a 50MP sensor? I can think of like 2...

    Probably the Otus', the Sigma Art's, the new Tamron wide zoom, the 55FE, and more than likely the 135/1.8 Zeiss lenses in A mount are capable... I'd assume.

    I'm hoping for 50mp with a6000 (or better) AF. Also, the extra resolution would be quite welcomed by long lens sports/wildlife shooters, who often go with aps-c bodies to get enough resolution for distant subjects.

    Quite a few. Let us not forget the pixel sizes of the NEX'. I find the A7r's larger pixels (compared to a NEX) easier on the lenses. Extreme corners are another issue but those shooting landscapes and such always stop down, most of the time beyond diffraction limits.

    Also, frankly, i have not seen any pictorial demonstration of the Otii doing anything extraordinary (except those discussing charts and such, of course) that can not be done by any other lens.

    The A7R II would need about 57 MP to match the NEX-7 in resolution.
    50 MP is almost there.
    With best regards, K-H.

    Don't forget a whole new computer to process those monster files in Lightroom.
    Good chance your current setup won't cope well, unless you are already processing D800/A7r level photos with plenty of horsepower to spare!

    Re: A7r Successor Coming Soon

    Nah, they won't be monster files due to mandatory lossy compression!

    I agree with most of the above: we need excellent lenses (in particular 16-24mm primes and a 85mm portrait lens). I have a feeling Zeiss will eventually deliver, but I am losing faith that Sony recognises the importance of high-end wide angle primes. Considering the application of such cameras, these should have come early, not at the tail end of the lens rollout.

    There is only one lens in the Sony lineup that really is going to impress on 50MP and it is the 55mm. The 35mm will do on centre, but we will get nothing extra towards the edges. The lens is already the limiting factor. We will, however, get less moire and we may get slightly better tonality.

    I took a chance on the system and I am very pleased with what it can do for me with what has been released, but I will not be investing a penny more in the system until I see prime lenses wide than 28mm that really can do the sensor justice. Simple.

    My hands up for a 21mm f2.8 prime that's not too big. Notice I give up a bit on max aperture to help reduce size/weight. Something akin to that lovely Fuji APSC 14mm (21 equiv).

    Re: A7r Successor Coming Soon

    * 50MP sensor
    * Uncompressed raw files
    * A7II body
    * IBIS stabilisation
    * Electronic shutter
    * better EVF (color/contrast)
    * Better AF
    * and, why not, binning option to get clean, A7s like, high iso 12MP files

    That's my wish list but I'm pretty sure that Sony will distil them with parcimony in the next to come 50MP.
    We will have to wait for the next generation in 18 months to get our dream cam.
    But within 18 months from now we will have even higher expectations, fed by new 'must have' options that won't be present in this dream cam but in the next to come...
    If this business scenario shows up, I'll buy a D810 an stick with it for 3 years at least, hopefully

    My Metabones + ZEiss APO Sonnar ZE 135/2 combo is having sleepless nights waiting for features listed above materialize in a camera. I'd even be happy with a 36 MP sensor if there is EFCS, IBIS and lossless (compression is ok, just like Nikon NEF, lossy compression is not) RAW.

    I would take all this in a heart beat even at 36mpx, 50 mpx is a bonus sort of with glass I figure we can at least squeeze 42mpx out our current glass for the most part. Ill take that too. Not kidding as much as I hate being first in line, I will this time if it has the A7II attributes.

    This would be an interesting development if it aids in Sony getting more accurate AF into their bodies. This could potentially be huge to have 5-Axis and pro level AF response with the best 35mm sensors.

    Possibly but a lot of what he says comes to fruition. Some of the other stuff may get locked away in some R&D department though as well.

    SAR does rather well as a clearing house to keep up with the myriad pieces of information out there, much of that can be hard to find. Interviews with designers and developers, snippets and links to product reviews all are of value. I am interested in the 'behind the scenes' people, for example. And yes, he will have the story first and cover it best.

    I'm all for higher-res sensors - this forces lens makers to shape up, so eventually we'll get better lenses across the board. More is better.

    Where do I place my order? A 50mp camera like this is the end game for me. I have a monster computer used to processing Hassy 200MS 6 shot files, so no worries on the processing front. Bring it on.

    IF TRUE, then this was a very smart move from Canon. Having both DualPixel and Exmor tech will put Canon ahead of Nikon for a few years. Years that can be used to keep looking for ways to keep up with Sony and Samsung sensor technologies. Canon bought time.

    You know folks I just did a 3 day event like I have been doing for years but I have to say I am worn out. The weight and bulk do get to you after you get over the hill age. So I look forward to more mirror less type systems from Sony and I'm all for advancement in technology. I'm never going back to a DSLR so here I am at that line in the sand and I'm staying mirror less.

    If the AF is good and I can use the A mount lenses with a good adapter that won't take away from the speed of the AF, I may be all in, depending upon the price.

    I like SAR but find that the comment section is sometimes far more accurate than the blogger himself.

    Good chance your current setup won't cope well, unless you are already processing D800/A7r level photos with plenty of horsepower to spare!
    No problem for me - my primary system is an IQ180 MFDB which gives 80 megabyte raw files....!

    And much as I love my a7r/a7II, they ain't no match for MFDB for landscape pix printed large.

    Bill, how would a 50.6Mp DSLR camera go for enlargement comparisons?

    (CW5) Image and Specs of Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R leaked (50MP sensor) - CanonWatch

    I'd find it hard to resist more high res crack cocaine now the a7r has been with me awhile.. ;-)

    This makes it more exciting:

    (CW5) Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Image and Specs Leaked - CanonWatch

    As all EOS lenses are usable with the FE bodies, it is awesome!

    Some months ago I published tests of the a7r/FE55 against IQ180/SK 80.
    24 inch prints were virtually indistinguishable for resolution but the MF held better tonality. At 36 or 48 inches there was no competition.

    Having said that, the remarkable definition of the FE55 is not shared by the other Sony lenses, whereas most of my MFDB lenses are the equal - or even better - than the SK 80mm.

    Of course the a7r is 36 mpix, less than half the IQ180; a 50 mpix sensor would likely be much closer to the MFDB.

    We'll have to see - meanwhile portability means the Sony is getting more use than the MFDB unless I'm on a photo-specific venture where ultimate quality (short of a tech cam) is needed.

    Ta, Bill, I do recall your very informative posts; not many people get to see these kinds of real world comparisons. There is a kind of air of incredulity about the 50Mp rumors right now, some say the Canon will be very restricted in ISO and have a thick CFA for better color, others say it's all nonsense. Might be an interesting next couple of months, and Sony - what will you do? ;-)

    It all depends on Canon. If the new camera has the expected improves in DR and it sports an articulated screen, definetely I'm buying. If it fails to come witih either of these personal wants, who knows then.
    On the other hand, the new Sony will come with a Sony sensor of course and that means the DR I want and probably improved upon. The tilt screen is a given.

    So, it still looks like Sony will get my money. Hopefully a few more days to know if otherwise
