Sony travel the world kit

Thanks that's good info and agree the zoom at the long end is good but below 35 is stellar, why I want a 35 prime. Have to see what's announced next week on the 1.4. Very little info on both lenses right now on how they perform but yes I want a more organic looking lens.
I have a feeling the 35 Distagon will be great. I could be wrong but I think it may be the no nonsense sense that doesn't have to compromise between size, speed, and IQ.

If it's good enough I may sell my Sigma Art for it (mostly for expanded AF points when needed) although I do love it to be honest. I've also thought about just adding the Loxia for a lighter MF option because I prefer MF most of the time on these cameras for candid shots and critical focus.

Yes you have my Sigma Art 35 and I loved it but I'm still in a lot of debate on the 35 as for me its my most favorite general focal length. I know a couple things right now the 16-35, Minolta 200mm are my serious keepers. The Mitikon and the ZA 85 1.4 are my second tier favorites. The canon 24TSE as well but I have this hole at fast 35mm prime I want to fill

My other biggest issue is the PR lens 24-70 and until something is better than the current one I have shot the last three gigs this week in crop mode with the 16-35. The files are big enough and it focuses far better in low light than the 24-70. It's called cheat when you have too. Lol

Would the Sigma Art 18-35/1.8 be a better cheat lens in crop mode?

Yeah I'm debating on the prospect of the new 35 Distagon or just picking up the Loxia 35. I'm still looking for that "true" 35 Cron replacement for what was probably a toss up for my most used lens with the ZM50 on the M9. Optically the Sigma Art matches/exceeds it. The 35FE didn't let enough light in or have enough character for me although it's technically a very good lens as well. Ultimately I liked it but didn't love it so it needed to go.

OK, Matt, where are the pictures? That's the problem with equipment. You have to actually use it, dammit. :cussing: Pictures, soon. I promise.
I hope one of these days you will get to a stage where you would realize that the time wasted on looking for, testing and evaluating gear is quite boring than the real thing (photos). It is a very personal thing.

BTW, why delete posts a minute after posting? The most important thing about photography is confidence.

Everythng else is secondary. :)

Right on both counts.

Well no because it already cropped and can't get past 35. Great lens though but it won't give me the 24-70 . I don't think you can throw it in crop mode.

Ricoh GR Digital: Sharp 28mm equivalent lens, APS-C sensor and wonderful snapshot-mode focusing, what's not to like? Okay not my favorite focal length, nor my most heavily-used camera, but I seem to get an exceptional percentage of "keepers" with it and my gripes are quickly forgotten as I peruse it's output. Good combo of stealth, speed and pure image quality. I also like Sony's RX100, but will give the nod to the GR. GR is also my top choice for food pics.

Although I own and enjoy using Sony's A7, I think I'd leave it home in favor of an A6000 or NEX7, SELP1650 and SEL35F28Z. Power zoom has copious amounts of barrel distortion, CA and coma, but it's also very very handy. The 35 mm prime meanwhile really makes the most of all those pixels.

Tripod: Vanguard Alta 225CT carbon fiber / magnesium + Joby Ballhead X

But simply being there with a camera is more important!

Crop mode digital gives us more options than we had in film days. Obvious statement, sorry  :p

To explain, I can take my GR and it has 28mm native, and 35 and 47mm using the crop setting.

Additionally I could take an A7 with a Loxia 35mm and use it in APS-C mode to get 50mm. Or take a A6000 body with the Loxia 35mm to gain 50mm.
One lens, two cameras = two focal lengths.
A spare camera might be wise on Guy's trip. You don't want to have one break and nothing to show when you return.

Of course you could just crop in post. Not quite the same though when you are framing up ready to take a pic.

I have a good start on the camera & lenses.
I'd take my A7R, 24-70 & 70-200.
For this trip I would purchase an A7 MkII and the 16-35 and leave my NEX-7 and 10-18 at home.

I'd take my Lowe Pro Urban Photo Sling 150 most everywhere. I can (just barely) get my iPad Air in the tablet compartment along with one or two lenses and a camera body. If I stuck with the NEX-7 and the 10-18 those would fit along with the A7R and 24-70. I don't think I could get two A7x bodies in it with lenses mounted. Guess I'll need to bring my Tamrac Rally 5 as well...

I really like the Markins Q10i ballhead. It mates perfectly with the Acratech leveling base.
I'd downsize from my Gitzo 3540 to something like the Feisol Tournament CT-3442 Rapid for this trip.

I am heading to Spain with the family in June and I am planning to take the following:

Sony A7 II
Sony FE 24-70 f/4 ZA
Sony FE 70-200 f/4 G
HVL-F43M Flash (because I don't have an A7s II yet)

Have to make a decision on the following:
Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 (under consideration)
Sony FE 16-35 f/4 (under consideration)
CV 21mm Ultron f/1.8 + CV VM-E Helicoid Adapter (under consideration)
CV 35mm Ultron f/1.7 II + CV VM-E Helicoid Adapter (under consideration)
CV 50mm Nokton f/1.5 + CV VM-E Helicoid Adapter (under consideration)

I am still researching the performance of these primes on the A7 II, but I would take them instead of the 24-70, if I got them. Might go 21-35-50 as the 15 may be a titch too wide.

All this packed into a Lowepro AW200 Sling bag. For a tripod, I would take a Giottos YTL8354 + Vanguard GH-300T Pistol Grip ballhead. For storage, I will take a WD My Passport Wireless 2TB Drive with SD Card Reader and an HP Stream 7 tablet with card reader so I can also FTP a copy of the images home when I encounter WiFi.

Glad this is all in our heads as I will have to rob a bank to afford all of this...

If it was mainly a Sony only kit I would take A7II (when Sony finally give me a new one) with the FE16-35, A7s with FE24-70, FE 35 (would replace this with the FE 28 when it comes out), FE55 and finally leica APO-telyt 135, This plus iPad air would all fit in my Billingham Hadley pro and I could cover pretty much any situation with it. If I wanted to travel lighter I would probably go with the Leica M240 (plus Olympus EVF) with WATE and summicron 28 asph and the A7s with the FE35 and FE55. In either scenario I would also take the most excellent RX100 III which is so small that it fits in my trousers front pocket and can be with me at anytime.
I wouldn't take a tripod

I see Sony is expected to release 2 new cameras. I suspect one is a 4k RX10 replacement. I noticed though no one had the rx10 in their lists. There's also very few images from it on here but have seen a lot of video from it elsewhere. I know of people raving about it like the rx1 but is it thought of as too big to be a second travel camera and not be considered at all?

Just came back from a trip around the world. We were in asia, our flights circumnavigated the globe. :p

Nex-7 + touit 12mm (18mm)
a7r + 40mm m-rokkor
Contax G 90mm
Sigma 19mm DN (28mm) - this wasn't on the trip but I'll add it for handing off the camera for other people to use.

No Sony, but I'm visiting Istanbul in a few weeks with just my Fuji X100T. Been doing this for years and I'm tired of all the gear lugging. If I'm not completely satisfied with the Fuji, I'll switch it for a Sony A7ll with the 35mm Zeiss.

Travel is a bit like weddings - some want the full monty treatment for total coverage recall decades later, others are happy with a handful of fine art images. Travel invites the full range from a few snapshots of the key sights and selfies (can't forget them) for the world weary, to something more significant but with limited time/will to carry and care for gear (backup, charging, etc); out to semi-pro or advanced documentary work - the real full monty, which is very different indeed to 'travel lite' or travel medium', in terms of logistics and itinerary planning.

I advise looking with a steely eye at your travel plans and circumstances, then match them with your gear needs - needs, not desires. The more important it is to you, the more time to allocate to it and plan for it in your itinerary, and the better the equipment should be.

Better is not bigger here, otherwise you would not be reading a Sony forum would you? ;-) Better is a better match. Make every piece earn its place, be ruthless. Gear forums are full of people who just love the equipment, often for its own sake - hence camera porn. Be prepared to walk away from the one percent shots you need that exotic lens for, for example. Consider what you want to see as your 'trip portfolio' when you return home. The more you know the more prepared you are.

Consider the wastes of precious shoot time devoted to lens changes, adapters, filters, and all the fussy stuff like stitching, tripods, etc. It's all going to destroy spontaneity, exact an opportunity cost, including the next great image you cannot find the time or energy, or the approval of impatient significant others, to take.

Final word goes to Steve McCurry:

"I don't want to get too technical. I hate all of that. In the end it just depends on what your picture looks like. You print it out and put it on the table and that's proof right there. Everything else goes away."

Oh, probably more than good enough but what's the fun of a complete one-piece solution that doesn't involve endless configuration decisions
