Your wish list for A7r II or A9

Those who are likely to buy one and actually use it ( ), please list what you want based on your experience with the A7r/A7 and the like.

    Mine are simple:

    1. Global shutter.
    2. Much thinner filter stack on the sensor with minimal epoxy in the optical path.
    3. A non plastic, durable mount.
    3. Pricing just like in the Japanese market with no price fixing.

    1) raw file not 11-bit
    2) quiet, vibration-less EFC shutter
    3) in-body image-stabilization
    4) multi-shot capability similar to Olympus EM-5 II

Just like a A7II with bigger sensor and uncompressed raw.

This pretty much covers it. I'd welcome any other like AF improvements, better EVF, but those would be just icing on the cake.

    Lighter than the a7r
A bit larger than the a7r
    nex-7 evf placement
    mount further away from grip

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

    1) Quiet, vibration-free shutter (EFC?)
    2) Better AF in low light
    3) Uncompressed raw file; no in-camera "secret sauce"
    4) Better ergonomics (like the a7II grip, shutter release button, etc.)
    5) IBIS
    6) Simplified menu system
    7) Better weather sealing
    8) Better battery life

The little tiny customizable buttons on the a7R disturb me. Coming from a DSLR world, it's toy-like. Man up!

What Guy said. Fix camera mount to all metal. Shutter vibration problem fixed. Plus a few ergonomic tweaks: a larger grip that allows holding camera with gloves on. Currently the grip is too close to the lens for gloved fingers to fit in between. Maybe the A7II already takes care of that, I haven't used one yet. Bigger C1 button, again for manual focus when using gloves. I'm evaluating camera systems to use on a possible Antarctica project, so usability with gloves is important for me. Not to mention in this never ending record breaking cold winter we are having here in New England.

You meant more pixels than the A7 II (24mp), I presume?

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

    - losless compressed RAW (why uncompressed?)
    - keep the 36 MP (I don't see much value in 50+ MP in 35mm format)
    - electronic first curtain
    - image stabilisation
    - tethered live view in Capture One
    - less shutter noise
    - shutter button placed more ergonimically

    EFC shutter
    IBIS
    A6000 type autofocus
    50+ MP sensor
Ergonomics and layout like the A7II
Excellent trade-in program for old A7r

I'm seriously been thinking of selling the A7r and get a second A7II while I wait for the A7r replacement. The A7II is a real pleasure to shoot over the A7r.

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

My list is completely directed towards a higher end A9 model which I'm hoping is released.

I actually wouldn't mind a slightly larger and more robust body that gives a similar balance as the current models with the grip attached.

Electronic shutter option for silent shooting up to 1/64,000 because it's all the rage now and if your camera doesn't have it then it sucks apparently.

Increased battery capacity to get maybe up to 500+ shots per battery (this would cover more than a day of shooting for me but maybe not others.)

Increased resolution if it doesn't take away from overall IQ.

More accurate AF and IBIS that performs well in lower light (the A77II and A6000 are a great starting point regarding speed.)

Improved/more accurate focus peaking (although I don't use it much because it's ever so slightly off unless you're on low and sometimes it's hard to see depending on the contrast/highlights of the scene.)

Lossless compressed and uncompressed RAW options (so that I won't have to read about the lack of it anymore.)

A monochrome version because many of us want one but don't want to pay $6-8K for one.

A lowlight version (similar to the A7s) with resolution in the 16-24 megapixel range and comparable/better performance.

Metal lens mounts on all bodies.

A sub $3-4K price for each body or variant.

More fast prime lenses with character (so I can buy them in peace and without judgement.)

More medium speed MF Zeiss Loxia's (or is that Cosina? Who really cares if it performs in a desirable manner?)

More slow prime lenses (so I can stop reading about the lack of them and how owners/ non-owners alike feel cheated/slighted.)

Lastly I want Sony and Zeiss to issue an official statement naming Tamron as majority owner of both... I'm kidding about parts of my list but that's my list and direction I'd like to see the FE system continue to go.

Convert it to FS or IR after the upgraded body is released. It's a great bed for that duty where you probably wouldn't want another IR body anytime soon if ever based on IQ.

Tre, if we could stick to the topic on hand (and not monochrome, lenses, etc, etc), it would be great.

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

    Mine is largely a cut and paste from some already posted;

    raw file not 11-bit
    quiet, vibration-less EFC shutter
    in-body image-stabilization
Much thinner filter stack on the sensor (similar or better to the mod)
    A non plastic, durable mount.
Better ergonomics (like the a7II grip, shutter release button, etc.)
    Better weather sealing

I'm a bit conflicted about batteries. While I'd like a 2-3x higher capacity battery I would NOT want it if it adds to the overall size of the camera. As I have about a dozen NEX/A7 batteries it's easy to take extra and it's only seconds to switch them out.

Lastly, 36MP or higher, but only if performance matches or exceeds the A7r for DR and noise at low ISO

I don mind the batteries as they are small and light. I have 8 of them and depending on job I carry what I need plus 2.

Yes its really just self drying rubber and it stays on until you pull it. No damage at all. Love it

I put a dot on all my small buttons on my A7r and it helps a lot

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

What I'd like with the A9 is ...
    1, A7II styled body
2, Separately purchasable plug & play sensors which just drop in, High Res, Low Light, B&W ... future developments.
    3, Uncompressed raw.
4, No rolling shutter (I don't know what that is yet .. but it's there and people don't like it apparently.
5, Full weather sealing .. I'm really paranoid after reading of ingress into the rear LCD.
    6, Quiet, vibration-less EFC shutter.
    7, In-body image-stabilization.
8, €1500 price point for body and 1 sensor.

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

I'm using the A7 right now, so my wishlist of improvements is already halfway covered by the A7ii. Must-haves for me on my next camera:

    - 5-axis IBIS
    - Silent shutter
    - A6000-like autofocus, focus tracking, and FPS
    - Better low-light AF

Ergonomically, I had a couple of wishlist items:
    - Move the shutter button further forward on the grip (like A7ii or A6000 is good)
    - Move the menu button to the right side of the camera
    - Rangefinder-style body like the A6000 would be better than the hump
    - Built-in flash

Nice to have, but not critical features for me:
    - Uncompressed RAW
    - 4K video recording
    - Live composite/bulb modes like Olympus has
    - High-res sensor shift mode like E-M5ii
    - Faster startup
    - Better battery life

somebody must make a full size (= including grip area) base plate for mark II bodies, just like for mark I... not that castrated abomination that RRS for example sells for A7 II vs even their own version for A7/A7r/A7s

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

The A7 series can benefit from all of these welcome improvements. From my point of view the only area where these cameras are truly deficient is in the quality of the auto-focus. I may be tempted by a high res that avoids the shutter problems of the A7R or a high sensitivity camera with 4 more mpix than the A7S but the one thing that will absolutely get my attention is an A7 model that can realistically compete with the Canon and Nikon professional level cameras (e.g. Nikon D4S) at the football stadium. When they produce one of these I'll sell my DSLR and all its lenses and have Sony tattooed on my forearm (well, maybe).

    OK :

    30 mpx Monochrome
    Quiet shutter
Menu designed by an adult not a gamer

    AND AND AND :

Matched 40mm Loxia killer lens at whatever aperture brings the optimal design.

    [Yeah right ........]

    ............. Chris

EDIT ..... Nearly forgot; a 6x7-ish sensor for those of us who find 2x3 a strained ratio.

    Hi,

Top priority for me are in order of importance:

    • Electronic First Shutter Curtain
    • Higher sensor resolution
    • At last three programable presets
    • Larger battery

If I was offered the choice, I would choose a camera with OLP filter and no IBIS.

    Best regards
    Erik

Re: Your wish list for A7r II or A9

First the silly list, I want -
    1. Face, smile and bad attire detection
    2. Body available in a range of colours, pastels and floral patterns
    3. A pop up flag to indicate photo taken

    Sorry

    Seriously though...
Now that the silly list is out the way, what I'd really, really like to see is a sensor that works well out of the box with Leica, Zeiss and CV M-Mount film lenses.
Is there is some way for Sony to fix at the sensor level the vignetting, smearing and CA in camera for all those FF M-Mount wonders we have available?
If Sony sorted that, they would resell all the A7 cameras again.

The M9 is a FF digital and it works?

Beside what have stated by everybody, I would like to see a real NORMAL ISO hotshoe mounting on all newer camera.
It's a shame to see a plastic base on a $550 flash which is the most venerable, wear and tear point.
If not, newer cameras better be fully functional with the HVL-60M

Beside all the good suggestions already offered, I would add:

    1) A video-less version with an accordingly (much) lower price tag
    2) A 24mm Tilt/Shift high quality lens (Zeiss?)

I would love to see a native 24mm shift lens too. Actually i own the first version of the Canon 24mm and i was wondering about updating it. But a native one would be even better. Although i fear that it may not occur soon.

As for video : i'm not so sure that doing without it would allow lower prices : with an EVF that function is also needed for live view.

    FF
    High FPS / large buffer
    Silent shutter
    Very quick AF

A mount or no loss of speed when an adapter is used when converting to A mount
    OVF

Usable high ISO and lowlight AF for shooting night swimming or water polo so not every shot is blurred by motion.

Beyond that, it is all dead weight.

Less computer game interface and novelty modes.

Menu organization that makes even a little bit of sense to real world photography applications.

(A7R) Lose the Medium Format mirror flap sound and vibration (not much to ask of a mirror-less camera :-)

Lose the lag for better decisive moment photography.

Better EVF refresh with less smearing when moving the camera in low light.

Full RAW file, or Lossless RAW compression, but only if it is truly lossless (which I still do not believe in).

Standard PC port so a TTL speed-light can be used in the hot-shoe for fill when shooting with strobes.

    And my biggest irritation:

Separate, instant LCD review without the last image shot also appearing in the EVF.

More auto-review options, down to say 0.1 sec duration.

Option to display finder data including histogram outside of the image area.

    Untethered firmware updates!!

Return to the rangefinder- style body (eyepiece on side, no "pentaprism")
