Hougemont is a sacred place to many true British people still,.....and not enhanced by the new 'politically correct' memorial which is also poorly researched and rather flamboyant, but lacking in the actual desperation and fury of the event. The gates were forced shut by the 2nd foot guards (Coldstream Regiment) whose simple and humbling memorial can be found on the wall of the farmhouse.

Waterloo was a ferocious battle with 20,000 casualties, however the defenders of the gates had the humanity to spare the French drummer boy who got thru the gates during the attack although none of his 30 comrades survived.
