    IMBY: 2 Mule Deer

Yesterday afternoon 2 Mule Deer visited our backyard.
They easily can jump our 5 foot high fence or gate.
We first saw them near the water dishes we set out for the birds.

    Re: A7r, A7r2 - and why I'm keeping both ...

    Trip Down Memory Lane 1

The Sony A7r, i.e. ILCE-7R was announced in October 2013 with availability that December.
    https://www.dpreview.com/articles/99...ras-a7-and-a7r
Indeed I got mine in early December 2013.

My reason for the A7r was so that I finally could shoot my Leica R lenses adapted on a Full Frame FF camera. Of course I also wanted to use my Leica M lenses on it.

The Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35mm F2. 8 ZA was also announced in October 2013 with availability that same month. I got my copy of that lens in December 2013, just a few days after my A7r had arrived.

One of the very first shots was with the Leica-M WATE 16-18-21/4.

    Sony ILCE-7R + Leica-M WATE 16-8-21/4 @ 16mm, f/?, 1/125 s, ISO 100, Date Taken 2013-12-05 16:18:21.

Now a couple of early shots with the Leica-R 280f4.0 APO lens.

    Sony ILCE-7R + Leica-R 280f4.0 APO @ 280mm, f/5.6?, 1/60 s, ISO 100, Date Taken 2013-12-17 17:10:41.

    Sony ILCE-7R + Leica-R 280f4.0 APO @ 280mm, f/5.6?, 1/10 s, ISO 100, Date Taken 2013-12-17 17:16:57.

I processed these images with Capture One 20 Pro to easily reveal the snow on the ground.

Now a couple images with the Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35 mm F2.8 ZA .

    Sony ILCE-7R + Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35 mm F2.8 ZA (SEL35F28Z) @
    35 mm, f/11, 1/90 s, ISO 100, Date Taken 2013-12-12 15:43:19.

    Sony ILCE-7R + Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35 mm F2.8 ZA (SEL35F28Z) @
    35 mm, f/13, 1/90 s, ISO 100, Date Taken 2013-12-12 15:39:08.

Of course then it was discovered that not all Leica M lenses worked well with the A7r and for certain tele lenses and exposure times the A7r could exhibit shutter shock. For example documented in this thread.

    Trip Down Memory Lane 2

The Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1. 8 ZA was announced by Sony on October 16, 2013.
    Mine arrived in June 2015.

    Sony A7r2, i.e. ILCE-7RM2, Date First Available, June 10, 2015.
Mine arrived in August 2015, so about 2 months after the FE 55.

The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8-22 Macro G OSS SEL90M28G, Date First Available, March 1, 2015.
Mine arrived in August 2015, same as the A7r2.

    The Sony FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS SEL70300G , Date First Available, March 31, 2016.
    Mine arrived in July 2016.

    Sony A9, i.e. ILCE-9, Date First Available, April 19, 2017.
    Mine arrived in May 2017.

The Sony FE 100-400mm F4.55.6 GM OSS, Date First Available, April 19, 2017.
Mine arrived in August 2017, 3 months after the A9.

The Sony FE 400mm F2. 8 GM OSS was expected to arrive in the USA in September 2018.
    Mine arrived in October 2019.

So, the gear arrived in this order at my place:

    2015-06: FE 55
    2015-08: A7r2
    2015-08: FE 90

    2016-07: FE 70-300

    2017-05: A9
    2017-08: FE 100-400

    2019-10: FE 400

Next, how did I initially use my new tools?
    With best regards, K-H.

    Trip Down Memory Lane 7

    Images from 2015.09.22 mostly shot with A7r + FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS .

Hummingbirds seem afraid of Ants, Bees, Yellowjackets, Hornets, and especially Praying Mantises. Avoiding those critters enables Hummingbirds to stay alive. I have a pretty large number of these almost 5 year old images that show the interaction of a Hummingbird and a Praying Mantis. With the exception of 1 or 2 images, the rest of them I never worked on and posted before. So here goes... .

    The Problem.

Karl-Heinz - If it's of interest for close focusing with the 100-400, try it with a Canon 500D 77mm close-ups lens. Seems to work very well. Just not as useful with the 1.4x converter on the FE lens though - depth of field is way too shallow. Sorry for the uninspiring subjects.

All 3 images below with Canon close-up lens, at closest focus distance and at 400mm focal setting. No cropping no sharpening.

    1) No 1.4X converter shot at f7.1

    2) with 1.4x converter shot at f10

    3) with 1.4x converter showinf shallow depth of field shot at f10

K-H - as you well know using a Achromatic close-up lens has the advantage of no light loss unlike extension tubes. Maybe not as "flat-field, but that doesn't often matter with many 3-D subjects.

Karl-Heinz - you're very welcome. However, using the 500D in the field with live subjects, seems to pose problems with autofocus and depth of field. I'm going to try some more tests when the rain stops using manual focus.
    Cheers

Focus Area Tracking: Flexible Spot L

So the Hummingbird feeder was swinging quite lively in the Wind. I used the above given focusing method and the Sony A9 had no problem keeping the Fly in sharp focus for about a second or two (25 frames) that I kept pressing down the shutter button, provided the initial focus was spot on.

Many thanks gandolfi for the feedback, much appreciated.

Yup, that was a rare event seeing that Praying Mantis climb down from the Acacia tree onto the Hummingbird feeder for several days in a row, waiting for its prey to get close enough, striking with lightning speed, consuming a Bee or feeding on a Hummingbird it had killed, and then climbing slowly back into the tree with rocking motion.

Amazing to watch from a distance. It would notice if one got too close and climb back into the tree right away and hide there among the leaves.

    Re: A7r, A7r2 - and why I'm keeping both ...

    Yup and overall speed!

The A9 line, including A9 II sensor, is now 3+ years old.
I would hope the new camera builds and improves on the A9 line and not the A7 (r,s) line. Those are really vastly different animals.

A global electronic shutter or close to it would be a really nice touch that hopefully could lead to the elimination of the need for a mechanical shutter. Blackout free EVF is another feature I would not be willing to give up. Surely IBIS and particularly AF should be possible to be improved even further. How about doubling or quadrupling high ISO performance?

Sony needs to raise the stacks by introducing new unique superior technical features nobody has offered so far.

That would also get them ready for the Olympics that have been delayed until next year.
