A7r, A7r2 - and why I'm keeping both ...

I am interested in the readout speed of electronic shutters - as it may lead to ROLLING SHUTTER EFFECTS IN ELECTRONIC SHUTTERS - for these cameras:

Olympus E-M1.1: ~1/13s (https://robinwong.blogspot.com/2016/11/olympus-om-d-e-m1-mark-ii-review_8.html, https://www.mu-43.com/threads/bizar...tion-photos-em1-with-40-150mm-pro-lens.82581/)
Olympus E-M5.2: ~1/13s (https://robinwong.blogspot.com/2016/11/olympus-om-d-e-m1-mark-ii-review_8.html)
Olympus E-M1.2: ~1/60s (https://robinwong.blogspot.com/2016/11/olympus-om-d-e-m1-mark-ii-review_8.html)

Sony A7r.2: 1/12 s in silent shutter mode (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3885998)
Sony A7r.2: 1/20 s in silent shutter mode when the image size is set to APS-C (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3885998)
Sony A7r.2: 1/300 s in mechanical shutter mode or electronic first curtain shutter mode (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3885998)

Sony A9: a lot faster than A7r.2 (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4145984, http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1486443)

What are you talking about? Are you sure the numbers you quote are for read out speeds?

1/300s for a 42mp file is just awesome!

What about the "ker-ching" A7r?

Why am I interested in the above sensor readout speeds?
Well, I would like to get a feel for how much the silent/electronic shutter in the A9 is improved over the one in the A7r.2.
Judging from my experience with the E-M1 and E-M1.2, the A9 silent shutter improvements should be substantial.

Of course, as demonstrated earlier in this thread
https://www.getdpi.com/forum/sony/56138-a7r-a7r2-why-im-keeping-both.html#post659835
the A7r.2 is quite capable of getting technically acceptable shots of Hummingbirds in flight using the mechanical shutter at 1/2000 s.

So the following images were shot with the A7r.2 and its silent/electronic shutter at 1/2000 s to possibly capture distorting rolling shutter effects,
ignoring the recommendations not to use EFCS or the silent/electronic shutter at exposure times faster than about 1/1000 s.
Having shot my E-M1.2 since December at 18 fps with the silent shutter and C-AF, I was reminded by my A7r.2 that it shoots only one frame at a time when using the silent shutter.
These are some of the A7r.2 images that look rather odd to me. I don't think that Hummingbirds are capable of these contortions, so I assume they were created by the A7r.2.

Of course, sometimes one gets lucky and gets a rather "normal" looking image like this one.

All images shot with A7r.2 + FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS.

Unfortunately the silent shutter in the E-M1.2 can still lead to rolling shutter distortions.

E-M1.2 + MMF-3 + EC-20 + big tuna 300/2.8 SHG @ 600 mm, ISO 6400, f/8, 1/2000 s.

So it will be interesting to see how the Sony A9 will perform in these situations. :facesmack:

What's your overall opinion of the 70-300? I've been looking at it for a "travel zoom" when desired after selling my old 70-200 in A-mount.

Thanks Tre, great question.

The Sony FE 28-135/4.0 PZ G OSS and the FE 70-300/4.5-5.6 G OSS are the only native zoom lenses I have.
As the lenses have image stabilization, I thought they would be great additions for my a6300 that doesn't have IBIS.
(I didn't expect Sony, just a few months after I bought the a6300, to come out with the a6500. I should have been more patient.
But now that I did buy the a6300, I will skip the a6500 and will get the A9 next, hopefully later this month.)
So far I have used the FE 70-300/4.5-5.6 G OSS on my A7r.2 and a6300, but I don't think I used that lens on my A7r, NEX-7, or NEX-5N. I should do that though. :facesmack:

What do you think? Is there a different answer for different distance to subject shots? Close, intermediate, far? TIA.

K-H.

K-H.,
IMHO, it is difficult to answer in those absolute terms. I am not making a habit of testing lenses, especially longer lenses, which this one belongs to. For wide angle lenses, I just test newly acquired lenses for decentering and not for actual sharpness. After that I just use it or "yes"t it for actual real-life shooting. For this and similar lenses I just took a few test shots of my book case at 15feet or so. Then a few outdoor images of some trees with needle-like trees and I just evaluate the sharpness from those shots. I care less for corner performance for longer lenses.

Let me be honest with you. The results of this lens are lagging slightly behind those of my Canon 400mm f/2.8 Mark II. But that's hardly a fair comparison as this one is a zoom lens and that Canon lens is probably the sharpest one out of Canon Mark II super tele lenses. I bet you anything, the results of the Canon EF 70-300mmL lens would fall in the same category, as well. For what the FE lens is designed for, it performs superbly.

In my experience in the last 2-3 months of owning this lens, the performance is approximately the same from MFD or close to it, to infinity. But again, I didn't specifically go out and test it as such. So, my opinion is strictly based on results of actual real life shooting. I hope this helps.

Joshua"

So there you have it! Frankly I bought the lens to tie me over until Sony comes up with a faster, longer and better tele lens.
The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS is certainly capable of getting great results in the hands of such an accomplished photographer as Joshua Ong alias AGeoJO.

Thanks for the feedback and I agree that a lens is either good enough for me or it isn't.

The only Sony FE lenses that I've purchased and would up disliking, returning, or selling were the Sony Zeiss 24-70/4 and the Sony Zeiss 35/2.8. Some like them... They weren't good enough for me and I refuse to do the constant "buying/returning dance myself." Essentially if there aren't any glaring optical faults and if I like the rendering then it's a keeper.

The 70-300 looks like a decent lens in the limited number of photos that I've seen but I'm debating between the 100-400 and this. I've tried the 70-300 on the A7R in store (because I was shooting IR and only had the A7R one me) but not the A7RII.

B&H shipped my A9. Scheduled to arrive next week Tuesday, the day after Memorial Day.
B&H shipped my A9 yesterday. Although I requested 3 day free delivery, my A9 is already on the truck "Out For Delivery".
I should have it later today!
It looks like B&H did ship by airplane after all - and not by boat! Yeah!!! :salute: Excellent customer service. Many thanks indeed!
So far UPS never delivered a damaged package to my house. Knock on wood! :facesmack:

Exciting news, K-H !
Did you order the new GM 100-400, too ?

All the best.
Thanks Bart. Exciting indeed!
I am under the impression the GM 100-400 is supposed to ship in July.
So I'll wait and see what the reviews have to say.

BTW I have the Nikkor AF-S 80-400/4.5-5.6 and Commlite AF adapter. I'll try that on the A9.

Did you also order fast SD cards?
Thanks Vivek.
I have Lexar 64GB 2000x and 1000x cards that initially failed in the E-M1.2 and E-M5.2.
They got replaced free of charge with REV B cards, that work fine in the OM-Ds' UHS-II and UHS-I slots.

UPS delivered my A9 around noon, battery charging now.
BTW Sony included a battery charger, as well as an adapter to charge via USB.
The A9 has 1 UHS-II and 1 UHS-I slot.
I stuck in one 2000x UHS-II and one 1000x UHS-I Lexar 64GB REV B card.
So far, so good!
Knock on wood! :watch:
