A7r, A7r2 - and why I'm keeping both ...

While wondering whether this company had a similar vehicle with the word Air instead of Ground on it ...

... and enjoying a coffee outdoors at a coffee shop, this gentleman stopped in his tracks, came over, ...

... when he noticed the camera on the table in front of me, and asked: "Is this an A9?"
Of course, I picked up my A9 with Batis 25 and took this one shot of him.
It turned out he is the proud owner of an a6000.

I took this shot of a reproduction of a painting by Secundino Sandoval ©'94 of Fuller Lodge, displayed in a Los Alamos waiting room.

A9 + Batis 25

Mr. Sandoval is a fairly well known local artist.
Fuller Lodge was housing the Ranch School before there was the Laboratory.
Please notice the word PEACE spelled out vertically on the tree to the right.

I assume you pointed him to this section of the GetDPI forum to share his work

Hmm interesting

https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Comp...-on-Nikon-D800E__1850_1035_1469_1009_1130_814.

I always thought my AF-S Nikkor 80-400 performed quite well on my D800E.
It seems the Sony FE 100-400 on A7r2 should do even better.
How will the 100-400 FE lens perform on the A9? :facesmack:

According to

FE 100-400 test with samples - FM Forums.

there seems to be some autofocus inconsistency, likely resolvable through FW updates. FE 100-400 test with samples - FM Forums, quote:

"Let me be perfectly clear.
As I wrote, I'm having focus inconsistency at long distances in AF mode with "my copy". It's different than saying this lens has focus issues.
Also, I only tried it on a A7RII.

I will be trying another copy next week."

Ghost Ranch (Georgia O‘Keeffe‘s Ghost Ranch in New Mexico http://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/okeefe-article-032002)

NEX-5N + Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35 mm F2.8 ZA (SEL35F28Z), FOCAL LENGTH 35.0 mm (52.0 mm in 35mm)

Back then the waiting times for the NEX-7 were too long for me as I needed a camera to finally be able to shoot my adapted Leica APO-Telyt-R 280/4. :)
So I bought the NEX-5N first to tie me over before i got the NEX-7, later followed by A7r, A7r2, a6300, and A9.
IMHO the NEX-5N was a better camera for me than the NEX-7, in particular for adapted Leica M lenses.
The above images were shot by various family members. Their request was for as small as possible a camera.
The NEX-5N + FE 35/2.8 fit the request perfectly and delivers the goodies. :)

Well K-H, is it any good ? As good as the Zuiko 300/4 ?
Thanks Bart. If used appropriately, both the
Olympus E-M1MarkII + M.300mm F4.0 + 1.4X Teleconverter MC-14 and the
Sony ILCE-9 + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS + 1.4X Teleconverter are exceptional and complementary tools.

Here are two Hummingbird shots with the Sony gear @ ISO 12,800 and ISO 25,600, as it was already getting pretty dark. :facesmack:

Sony ILCE-9 + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS + 1.4X Teleconverter @ ISO 12,800, FOCAL LENGTH 560.0 mm (560.0 mm in 35mm), APERTURE f/8, EXPOSURE TIME 0.0008s (1/1250), Exposure Bias Value: 1.7.

Sony ILCE-9 + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS + 1.4X Teleconverter @ ISO 25,600, FOCAL LENGTH 560.0 mm (560.0 mm in 35mm), APERTURE f/8, EXPOSURE TIME 0.0008s (1/1250), Exposure Bias Value: 2.

 smashing shots, K-H !
But I've got an assignment for you: try the 'same' shots with that 100-400 lens and your A7RII ...
Just wondering how the pixel surplus plays out here.

:salute:

Thanks Bart. As we all know the A7r.2 is a marvelous tool for stationary subjects.

For fast, erratically moving subjects it's the wrong tool -
noisy, excessively focus hunting, slooooow buffer emptying.

In short - one misses out on the Hummingbird action -
now that the Hummers. from as far north as Canada or even Alaska,
are traveling south through the Rocky Mountains,
enticed by the abundant wildflowers of late summer.

Using the A7r.2 for this is an exercise in futility and frustration, resulting in avoidable agony. :banghead:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In contrast the A9 • FE 100-400/4.5-5.6 GM OSS • 1.4x TC • 2x TC is such a stellar tool set for action photography!

A9 + 1.4x TC + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS

Sony ILCE-9 + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS + 1.4X Teleconverter @ ISO 1600, FOCAL LENGTH 560.0 mm (560.0 mm in 35mm), APERTURE f/8, EXPOSURE TIME 0.00063s (1/1600)

I find my a6300 works well with the FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS.
That's a great match with a 135 film equivalent FOV of 450 mm focal length.

Both my A7r.2 and a6300 do excessive focus hunting in available light with the FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS and Teleconverters. :facesmack:
The Sony ILCE-9 doesn't seem to have such issues.

Makes you wonder if a firmware update to improve performance on A7RII is coming eventually for the 100-400. I know many that are holding off on the A9 until they see what comes of the A7iii (plus the variants) and the A9 variants. I'm really am hoping that we see a higher megapixel version (in the 16-24 megapixel range) of the A7sII with PDAF added in the A9s. This would likely be the "perfect" all around camera for me when high megapixel isn't needed.

If there is a FW update, hopefully, sony will do away with their star eater "feature".

Maybe... It definitely isn't ideal for astrophotographers. I never run into the issue myself but it's a concern to see if they react progressively as they generally have in the recent past for high profile concerns.

Not just astro photography, it concerns terrestrial photography as well.

The biggest concern is that sony cameras are becoming way too much of a compromise just as we progressed from plastic mounts to metal mounts...
