Some Shots of Bits and Pieces of the Rio Grande with the
Sony ILCE-9 + FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS (SEL400F28GM)
Handheld

Black Mesa (White Patch in lower left quadrant is the Rio Grande)

Viewed from White Rock Overlook Point.

Handheld is fine with Birds.
Tripod use is better for landscapes with that fairly large and heavy lens.

Spotted Towhee

The A9 was set up to shoot something else, but what the heck, this opportunity was there for only a very brief moment. :facesmack:

Very nice pictures, but I keep forgetting that this is the A9 thread. Beautiful detail in the feathers.

Thanks Joel. I started this thread in September 2015 before there was an A9, or A7r.3, or A7r.4 or A9.2. I intended it as a reference thread for all things Sony E related. I even would include Sony APS-C gear here in this thread as well.

This thread is following an older thread, namely
A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...
https://www.getdpi.com/forum/sony/49470-a7r-why-im-keeping.html
from September 2013.
That was my response to jonoslack's thread A7r - and why I'm not keeping it ....

BTW, I still have and enjoy using NEX-5N, NEX-7, a6300, A7r, A7r.2 and A9.

Eye-AF for Animals?

I have switched on Eye-AF for Animals in my A9.
My eyes aren't good enough anymore to see in the EVF whether it's effective.
Looking at these images Eye-AF certainly doesn't seem to get in the way, it may actually doing its Job!

Sony ILCE-9 + FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS + 1.4X TC @ 560 mm, f/4.5, 1/640 s, ISO 4000.

Also these images are heavily cropped.
The A9 with 6,000x4,000 pixels seems to handle that well.
I used Focus Area Center or Flexible M.
These little birds move fast and erratically.
It's hard to predict where they will be next.
I either have my focus area on their head or I don't.
If I do the A9 focusses instantly and I get in this case an L burst of sharp images.
Of course, it would be doable but a bit harder with my A7r.2 or A7r. :facesmack:

Sony ILCE-9 + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS (SEL100400GM) @ 400 mm, f/5.6, 1/1000 s, ISO 200 or 250.

Under Metering Mode the A9 offers these choices:

• Multi
• Center
• Spot: Standard or Large
• Entire Screen Avg.
Highlight

Here I used Highlight.   :loco:
Seems very useful for certain situations. :facesmack: :salute:
