Cedar Waxwing (Back for the Winter)

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS + 1.4X TC @ 560 mm, f/4.5, 1/800 s, ISO 100, shot on tripod.

This was shot with the A7r.2 and not the A9.
PROS: A7r.2 (42 MP) has more resolution that the A9 (24 MP).
CONS: A7r.2 has slower focus speed, while buffer is emptying slowly it also blocks shooting new images, missed opportunities. An A7r.4 would be a definite improvement.

Sony ILCE-9 + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS + 2X TC @ 800 mm, f/11, 1/500 s, ISO 250, shot handheld.

Both images cropped to 2344x2344 pixels.
I was shooting both systems next to each other.

Using A9 + 400/2.8 FE + 2x TC on tripod should give much sharper images, especially with a faster shutter speed.

Comparing A9+2x TC+400/2.8 FE vs A7r.2+1.4x TC+400/2.8 FE
Max f/5.6 vs f/4, A9 syswtem has 9% higher resolution!

K_H , thanks for inviting all those bushtits to a grand dinner party.
Many Thanks B L, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Bushtits seem to stick together as a sizable group.
I have never seen just one show up by itself.

Before I put the feeder out I noticed them hurrying through our backyard trees, foraging. A Bushtit group shows up at the feeder hanging in the tree quite regularly, my guess every half hour or so and stays for 2 or 3 minutes. Then they leave the area.

When feeding there is a lot of flight activity to nearby branches and twigs as not all of them comfortably can hang on to the small green feeder cage. I also shot a few videos of their activity. When I had the feeder attached to a small pretty thin twig, their weight caused the twig to bend down quite a bit and the fixed camera couldn’t keep all the feeding activity in the frame. :facesmack:

They are really fun to watch.
‘Thanks again for your feedback, much appreciated!

Sandhills on 02022020 (Palindrome)

Yesterday we saw the first Sandhill cranes heading north, seems pretty early in the season. Today I managed to take a few images of them. Here you go.

Cedar Waxwings

For the last few weeks several times a day a flock of about one hundred or so Cedar Waxwings visits our backyard, first descending on a few trees, and then getting a drink from the water dishes we are setting out. It seems wave after wave of these birds is moving in, getting a drink of water, and making space for the next wave.

From year to year and season to season the bird population visiting our backyard changes quite a bit. Prior to this we have only seen very few Cedar Waxwings occasionally visiting us.

A few years back we had a sizable number of Evening Grosbeaks.

Even further back in one winter we were overrun by a very large number of American Robins.

Blue Birds have also been visiting us in the winter.

And now of course Hummingbirds are around.
