Sony sensors to be separate company

Sony has spun off its censors unit to constitute a separate company. I wonder if they will, thus, end their normal "time bans" for other companies (e.g., Nikon, Fuji) to use new sensors.

Sony's lucrative image sensor division is now a separate company

    Wow! Not entirely unexpected though!

Hopefully, it will lead to better EVIL cameras!

Can't say for sure about Sony or other Japanese companies but the logic for corporate separation is exactly that. By creating a separate company they are offering share holders access to profits without having to protect the interest of other divisions. i.e. There is now no competitive disadvantage for offering new sensor technology to all customers to maximize profit.

This makes sense - same situation as Asus/Pegatron, AMD/GlobalFoundries: Supplying components for the competition is lucrative but difficult to defend to exec management.

Any information who will hold the majority shares of the new company? In the case that it would be Sony Corp it might not get a complete free reign. If it's completely spun off and the stock traded on the open market it's a different story.

The way it's often done is the new company is "floated" to become a publicly traded entity on a stock market. This would (in theory) ensure that the sale price is correct. There will probably be long-term agreements in place to supply Sony with components, to reduce the temptation for competitors to acquire and control the new entity.

    There are several models.
One is for Sony to hold minority stake, independent Board of Directors, majority of stock granted to existing Sony shareholders and then have stock listed on an major exchange.
