Xperia 1, the XPan alternativ?

I always wanted an XPan, but when the prices were reasonable, I had no money, and now the prices are just going up, up...

However, Sony has launced a camera that may be an interesting alternative, the Xperia 1. The marketing focuses on its 21:9 video capabilities and all the cool tech handed down from the latest A7 models, but since the screen, effectively the viewfinder, is 21:9 too, it's an interesting wide format camera too.

The sensors are from what I can gather still 4:3 with a moderate 12MP resolution, so 21:9 is merely an 8MP crop. But 8MP is fine for most purposes, prints beautifully 40-60 cm wide, and the key here is the user experience using the wide viewfinder.

For video, 21:9 is a godsend. The wide format is close to Cinemascope (21.15:9) and perfect for story telling.

Oh... and it can make phone calls too :)

Go for it. I generally stick to the iPhone models. I pretty much only owned Android (and Black worry, Palm, and Windows smartphones in the past) until the iPhone 5s. I guess one can say that I converted but really it comes down to stability and the app ecosystem. Almost everything comes to iOS. Most things eventually come to Android but not everything.
