    Re: Fun With Sony Cameras

I am very intrigued by the new Tamron primes
Extremely light weight and inexpensive as well as the promise of excellent image quality
Particularly curious about the 20mm as I have the Tokina and may look to replace that with the Tamron
I have the 28-75 Tamron and find it produces 90% of the image quality of the much heavier and more expensive 24-70 GM for about 1/3 of the price
If you are looking for ultimate image quality w/o any compromise you will have to spend a lot and be willing to to put up w weight
Of course coming from MF that may not bother you in the slightest

    Re: Fun With Sony Cameras

I shot my Tamron 17-28/2.8 at an event alongside the 55/1.8 and Batis 85, and it was a great focal range complement to the two primes. I didn't need the wide angle all that much, so it was nice to have something small and flexible like this. Previously I was using the Voigtlander 15mm and 28/2 for these focal lengths, but the 17-28/2.8 is basically equivalent in size to the pair but with f2.8, the benefits of a zoom, and better image quality to boot. Tamron really made a smart set of compromises in this lens design.

The event was on the 61st floor of the Salesforce Tower in SF, here's a shot from the ground

    Hi Alan,

    It's unusual this year.
It's beautiful to watch but it's a little bit too cold to be outside.
Fortunately, we have 300 sunny days a year (more than Miami Beach) so the snow usually melts very fast.

    Re: Fun With Sony Cameras

Yesterday I visited Fort Breendonk. Built at the start of the 20th century to be part of the pre WW1 defense ring around Antwerp but most well known as a WWII prison camp of the Belgian branch of the Gestapo. It was used to round up dissidents, resistance fighters and Jews before deportation to the concentration camps in Germany and Poland.

These days it's a national memorial to commemorate the Belgian people killed in both wars. It's an impressive and sobering place.

    1: Entrance

2: With a "hot" welcome (as opposed to a warm welcome)

3: All guns are removed (already between the wars). The metal domes indicate where they were placed

4: This is the side the enemy saw whan approaching Antwerp from the South

Allthough at that time the fort was almost completely covered with a meters thick coat of sand

5: Inside corridor with the soldier quarters (WW1) / prison cells (WW2)

6: Looking into one of the cells

7: Gate to one of the inside courts

8: Unfortunately everybody knows what these were used for

    Thank you :-)
The lens is indeed an impressive piece of glass.
Here is the dropbox link to the RAW image, that I used in this particular instance (A7R4 + Sigma Art 35mm Metadata f/1.2 intact - Handheld 1/25th sec)....I will leave it up for 48 hours for you or anybody else that wants to download and have a play about with the image file.

Obviously f/1.2 has a shallow DoF as you would expect, so some aggressive downsizing sharpening was called for in-order to make the foreground and background look sharpish otherwise they would be soft and OoF.
PP in brief from memory (Warning the image is dark)...ACR (adjust exposure tonal range)/Level/Crop RH side, so that the moon is central/Cloud removed/Nik Colour Efex 4 Pro - Graduated ND filtration up and down to taste/Selective localized burning and dodging/ Noise removed with Nik Dfine 2/Downsized with Web Sharpener/ Border added.
    Have fun :-)

    Cheers Barry
