Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I was wondering just how much better the Leica 40/2 was than the 18-55 kit lens.
Looking at the corner shots from the kit lens the upper left looks okay - the lower right looks dreadful - decentered? That kit lens is a good lens, and I think it performs better than that at f5.6.

As for the relative sharpness of the NEX and X1 lenses . . . who cares - the IQ of both cameras is just fine, the purpose is surely completely different. . .

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I used 3 weeks for a japanese trip my NEX5 + FD85L1.2.. and little by little I gave up because MF was like a pain compared to my 5DMKII..
Results were almost acceptable, but without the new firmware I wouldn't recommend NEX5 .. and the zoom is really too weak compared to a samyang14F2.8+FD50F1.4+FD85L1.2 ..
Just some various samples from this trip.

and Wales to finish :D

I didn't try the new firmware.. but actually I won't recommend the NEX5 for travelling !!! MF is like a pain compare to MF with a 5DMKII and standard zoom is really to weak compared to MF lenses (Tokura, Canon FD, Samyang, etc etc)

Regardless of your disappointment with the camera, you certainly got some beautiful results with it! Very nice.

Some days ago I had some fun with my Nex-5 + Contax Lenses on the -Blind Guardian- Concert in Duesseldorf/Germany.

All pictures were taken wide open.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Two from the Yosemite workshop. NEX5 + 18-200. I've taken very few shots with the NEX as I've been working on my technique with medium format.

Very nice Terry ..... Is your medium format with a digital back or are you using film?

Nice shots. I was pleasantly surprised how clean and good concert shots were with the NEX5 when I took it to a concert out here last month.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Very nice Terry .... Back in the late 60's early 70's medium format was my camera format of choice. Smoked a bunch of film through them, used them to finance college and beer, and loved them.

Unfortunately, after college and Nam priorities changed. I got married and sold my medium format gear for the down payment on our first house. At the time it made sense ... A few years later I kicked myself for selling them.

Been eye balling recently that Mamiya 645 digital though but being retired in this economy makes it tough to justify that kind of expendature for a hobby. I surely do not wish to turn photography back into work instead of just pure enjoyment. I am as happy using a camera today as I was in the early 60's picking up my first camera. Life is good this way!!! At least for me ;)

Nice, Terry. I really like the first shot with the golden Aspens.

Ingo, Your concert photos with the Contax lenses are stunning .

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I just received an old Vivitar macro TC2X made for Canon FD50F1.4, but I prefered to test it on a FD85L1.2 ..

I would say, that the look is something like monstrous.
I usually never do any macro pictures, but it was nice to discover such type of pictures after half of an hour of tests in the garden during a sad and rainy Saturday .....

FullHD size by clicking on pictures ..

Actually, even if I was a bit disappointed with using an NEX5 during my trip in Japan, It was really a great pleasure on a tripod with an orientable screen. I am not a real specialist of macro, but it was fun to discover my own garden like that.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Those are nice shots 666 and the shots from your trip were really good. I would be worried about hanging that big lens off of the NEX mount. I'm not sure it is specked for that weight hanging on it.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Terry, I just did some more homework on medium format with digital backs ........ whew, they sure are not bashful at applying the prices! Camera and lens prices are high but not ridiculous considering how everything has jumped in prices. The digital backs are flat crazy in costs ...... one would have to have a very remarkable client base who has very deep pockets to justify the cost of a medium format body, lenses, and digital back. I added up the 645 Mamiya with a 80mm leaf and a Mamiya digital back ....... my first house cost less. One sure could not pay this setup off selling pictures to Arizona Highways ;)

You and the others on that workshop (which I will add, from the posted pics here on the forum are fantastic) must really like photography to pay those kind of prices ......... a Sinar 4x5 and color positive sheet film is still the value cost winner for IQ even today, IMO. Might be heavier and slower with less lens options but the price is right and within most peoples budgets and can do things that are difficult to accomplish with any other format.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Terry, Without a doubt the images from a 40+ or 65+ are awesome to say the least ..... I can see the draw to them. That is one "GAS" that for me will have to go unobtained .... I like a roof over my head and food on the table too much ;)

I truly wish you all the best on this move ...... I can't see you using a NEX or any smaller sensor camera much longer once you get used to that kind of IQ. Unbelievably awesome equipment!
