Wait -- are you saying KEEP the gear you own and take the trip, or are you saying you'd sell the gear to take the trip?

I'd do whatever I needed to do to take the trip WITH my cameras! Forget the expensive lens -- it's not a need, just lust.

    Helen,
Cynthia and I would be glad to escort you and show you the sights.
    Shoot your brains out IMO.
    Forget the Nocti
bring a body, a 50 a 35, and a bunch of film. Or if one lens, maybe the 35 lux

Definitely option #2. Irrespective of cost, 95% of the time I'd rather use your 1973 50mm blk Lux than a 1978 Noctilux 1.0, so for me it is a no brainer. Like getting a 35 lux, cash, and trip for free .

Option 2 every time. I find f2 or f1.4 works for me just about 100% of the time, especially since I sold my Noctilux a good while ago...

I'd add my suggestion, but it looks pretty unanimous without my input.

(Enjoy your trip and post pics when you return. )

    Helen,
Take the trip!!! When I first read your post and how you were wondering which choice to make, I almost wanted to send you my 2007 Noctilux to use just so you would not entertain anything but travel thoughts ;-) Take what you have and shoot all you can.

Au contraire.....the Noctilux feeds a real need for many In Helen's case, it seems that the trip to Japan should far exceed the Noctilux need

Helen -- Just make sure to get an aisle seat. I once had the misfortune of getting the middle seat of five on a return flight from Tokyo Narita. ACK!

Re: Helen Hill with a Question.....

    Helen,

The older Oly Stylus 35 was a cheap $89 camera with an unbelievably sharp 4 element lens with asph element in a plastic body....

Don Chatterton, who sold me my first three Leica Ms, carried one when he traveled and recommended it to me. No manual focus but great autofocus small built in flash and no pride of ownership. But the pictures out of the camera were wonderfully sharp. Don was a West Coast Leica dealer who could have carried any M camera he wanted.

When I am in the don't want to think about the camera mode when traveling but do want to shoot film I carry one. I have a couple left as I tend to give them away.

My earlier post was a reflection on the value of seeing Kyoto Tokyo over an extended period month vs week....some pictures we carry in our heads and they tend to be the ones that sustain us.

Sounds like a great plan under any circumstance...I know that you will treasure the memories.

Re: Helen Hill with a Question.....

Obviously, the trip, Helen. The memories of a trip remain with you forever. We made our first trip to Japan in '06 with 14 fountain pen enthusiasts. Since my Helen and I eat virtually anything put in front of us and enjoy 95% of it, we had a ball! While some of our compadres were busy hunting up western food, we were loving "going native".

But, if you can do both without going into hock, do it while the dollar will still buy as much as it does. I fear for its future. Am I the only one here that remembers the German Reichmark during WW II? (Probably the only one here, old enough to remember it. )

Definitely Japan! Make sure when in Kyoto to go to the Fushimi Inari complex of thousands of Tori gates spread over the hillsides. Kyoto is a dream.

Re: Helen Hill with a Question.....

Take it from a person who had to fly for a living. Get to the airport as early as you can and beg for the emergency row; plenty of legroom and you don't feel as packed in as with the other seats.

Enjoy Japan I was there for a month back in 1995 and got to visit the entire country; rode everything from taxis to bullet trains; had a blast when work didn't interfere.
