    Impressive iPhone postcard Application

Last week Luminous Landscape reviewed (highlighted is a better description) Bill Atkinson's new Photo Card iPhone app.

It allows you to send a hardcopy postcard to someone through the regular mail straight from your iPhone. You can also send an electronic version that includes the ability to add a voice message.

I bought the App and gave the hard copy mailed postcard a try. Sent one to me and one to my mother. She called me today and said wow, wow, wow this is fantastic. I also got the one I sent to myself. If you are sending them by mail, you buy credits and it takes 2 credits to send within the US and I believe 3 credits to anyplace else in the world. Two credits is about $1.50 to $2.00 (if you buy more credits they get less expensive). Considering the postage and you would be buying a postcard, this cost doesn't seem bad to me.

The cards are approximately 5 1/2" by 8" (much larger than I expected).
You can use photos that you shot directly on your iPhone or other photos in one of your picture galleries on the iPhone. The tip given at LuLa was to email yourself the picture and save the emailed files to your iphone - which apparently gives you higher resolution. The cards are also laminated.

In this age of electronic everything, I still find it nice when I get a real postcard in the mail from friends when they travel - now it can be your picture. Think about it, this way is completely hassle free, no need to find stamps (you actually pick your own stamp design), especially when traveling abroad. The addresses are automatically linked from your iPhone address book.

All in all, I am very impressed and glad I bought the app ($4.99) - it wasn't noted when I bought the app but my first printed postcard was free as a trial effectively cutting the cost of the App. I will definitely use it not only when I travel but even just to say hello to friends with an interesting shot that they can touch and feel.

Here is the link back to LuLa with screen shots

Ahh, that's nothin' when you can send an image from any cellphone camera, anywhere, directly to a picture frame sitting at home on the mantle, or on a loved one's desk at work.

No idea how it all works, or how much it costs -- the pic frame is a product of DoCoMo (NTT) Japan's largest cellphone company. I'm guessing there are basic cellphone intestines embedded in the thing so you basically send your pic from a cellphone to a cellphone. Who knows?!? I'd be a little concerned about about my picture frame address getting onto a porn list somewhere. Maybe the postcard isn't such a bad idea after all.

It sounds great , but let me bring to your attention a new application called RealPostcard available on App Store . With this application you maintain the feeling of the hard copy post card , you flip from photo side to the text side and back with your finger moving on screen . You save the RealPostcard on photo library as a regular photo . You don't have the expenses of sending a post card each time , it is immediate , and the feeling is maintained . I will be glad to hear your impression .

Arthur, this post causes me to wonder if you have any vested interest in ReadPostcard since it is not a free app, this is your first post, and you only joined yesterday. Your review here would mean more to me if this is not the situation.

Terry, that looks like a really fun app. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

    Re: Impressive iPhone postcard Application

I specifically liked Bill Atkinson's App because it was a real printed postcard that could be sent through the mail to someone. I enjoy getting real mail (that isn't junk or bills) and my friends do as well. This is a simple great way to make and send my own postcards to friends and family which feels like a little "present" instead of an electronic card.

From all photography aspects the hard copy professional photo is more impressive than the electronic one . How this fact is going to influence the photography applications for iPhone .
