Sally Mann: What Remains

johnastovall

Deceased, but remembered fondly here...
Finished Sally Mann's 'What Remains' for a second time. I had not cared for her early work but here she taps deep into the psyche. Death and time acting on the dead is the common theme. One section is on she reclaiming the bones of her dead gray hound (think Stan Breakage's 'Sirius') another a visit to a forensic farm ...where bodies are exposed for study, the battle field at Antietam, and the location on her property where an armed fugitive died. It is her consummate skill with the collodion process which gives this body of work its aetherial power and darkness. This a work to be returned many times and makes great demand on the viewer. There are no pretty pictures but rather thoughtful ones.
