The "new style" of photos in periodicals

Has anyone else noticed the recent style of photos in some publications? The New Yorker is the most striking example that I have seen. I'm referring to the post processing, not the composition. The pictures seem to have the color and contrast pumped up and generally seem overexposed. It's a striking look, but not a natural style. It causes me to pay more attention to the style than the content.

Is this the new, "in" style for photojournalism?

I'd hardly consider The New Yorker to be an archetypical model of photojournalism content, but yes: current vogue in magazine photos used in general editorial works is very fashion/style oriented, not particularly content/documentarian.

Most photojournalistic work is more 'normal' still, however.
