Okay i guess i need to address the new rules that where implemented the other day. So lets go over them so we all are clear on these types of postings . Just FYI this thread start is against the new rules as we really don't want to start threads with Hey look at my new blog type post. After 500 of them it will get old real quick.

We basically have three distinct rules implemented and if you read them real careful you can understand them better. I am going separate them by double spacing

5) Pointing to services or products on your own site are considered in the same light as SPAM by many, so we do not want direct linking inside posts at GetDPI.

You may post links to third-party articles, posts or even products that you feel are relevant to the GetDPI community.

You may place information about your own site and/or products and services in your signature.

We realize this is a "gray area," and while we believe the majority of our members will not abuse this, the moderators have full discretion to delete, edit or ban as they deem appropriate.

I think this one is obvious. Basically commercial venture and right inside a post or thread where it should not be.

This one is like we do today . Hey look at this new article written by so and so. We are always about good data being brought to our members to educate them more.

This one is the I do not want threads started and in a open post about your blog. I can see 500 posts on this and frankly we are not here to advertise everybody's personal blogs.

This thread is exactly the issue that we want to avoid is 500 posts like this. It's going to get out of hand and we have run into this already.

Please you got a blog just put it in your signature and leave it at that. We are all very interested in your work and we will hit your link to look.

Lastly and we certainly recognize the grey area but we have to start following the rules as if we don't things will not be GetDPI friendly and it can get certainly out of hand. We take a lot of pride in making this a friendly place to hang out and one of the main reasons is our members follow the guidelines we provide. We are some of the friendliest people on earth but we have to have these guidelines in place. So i do hope you all understand we are just trying to make this a place you WANT to be.

Thanks Jack, Guy and the crew at GetDPI

To clarify what would be okay here: If for example you had a specific technique that you used to generate an image that you share here, and made a post that gives the basic details about how you made it, then it would be okay to link back to your blog article that explained the process in more detail.

What we're trying to avoid is having hundreds of posts with just links in them --- IOW we want content posted first.

Thanks,

On my website you will see for sale, one left hand and wrist. Only one broken bone in the wrist and a lack of feeling in the little finger. Has been proven to be strong enough to photograph weddings with. See my website for more details, my blog for pictures, my facebook for the history, etc. Will trade for Jack's entire secret hideout warehouse & his P65+.

:p

Sorry guys, wanted to be the first to break the rules...

I was not aware of new - or any rules for that matter regarding this policy. As there is no way to delete a posting after a few minutes, I can't remove this, so you will have to do it for me. I do want to thank Steve for the compliment, it is appreciated.

Yes Aboudd no worries as you did not know and it was a good place for me to let folks know about the new rules in place now. Your thread start just happened to be a perfect example of the new rule so sorry I interjected it here as we all know folks don't always read the rules. BTW your blog looks nice and images as well. So if you could please put this in your signature that would be great. If you need help doing that or anyone else does i can fully explain how to go about that but it is in your User Control Panel under Signatures. Thanks Guy

When this blew up, I was tempted to add a post recommending Aboub's new blog site, but thought that wouldn't be the mature thing to do.

So I'll do it now. It's worth a look.

Well I hope it was not taken as a blow up. Surely not meant too just a chance for me to explain the new rule. Sorry if taken differently. As most know i am not the most eloquent writer by far. LOL

Hey Aboudd,

Don't feel badly, its an honest mistake. I made the same one a few months back by posting my blog with a lens review on the forum.

Since I always look for reviews and there were no commercial interest in the review (aka I did not get paid to review, make no money from the sale, and would not see any fiscal benefit from the sale of a used lens) I figured it would be something people would love to read. Especially when you consider how many Threads start with "Which lens should I get..." I think reviews are preemptive gifts to people who have that question. Not everyone agrees with me on this point.

Jack gave me quite a lashing for the whole thing. One of the other members from Leica Camera Forum stuck up for me though, which was nice. Because for an honest mistake the reception was a lot harsher than the one you got.

What really bothered me was a few days later another member here posted his "new blog" and no comment was ever made. I felt really singled out, especially because he is a commercial photographer and said the blog was created to attract new clients.

Somehow this one was missed, while I had a letter written to me that was very harsh, even my supporting member said it was a bit much. I was insulted and told that what I did was in "poor form" and a bunch of other unneeded comments. We are all capable of following instructions, I don't think they need to come with a bunch of insults. To me, that is destructive.

I understand, as I am sure you do, that the forum is not a advertising platform. In comparison the re-posting of rules for you to read, is the right way to correct a post. It is much better than what I received.

Just wanted to let you know that I empathize with your position and am happy to see Jack has changed the way he responds to this issue.

I love how things get left out of these comments. Fact Adam your FIRST post was directed right to your blog. Adoudd is a long time member here and certainly not his first post directing a link to his blog and we are simply explaining the rules.

Old thread is now locked.

Hey Guy,
Yes a number of things were left out.
I would have preferred an explanation
too, minus the insults.
My first post was intended as an introduction
for people because I was new. It was not
an advertisement. I did the similar thing
on L forum and did not get any angry
feedback or advertising complaint.
On the tail end of it, when another forum
member here posted his blog and even
announced his commercial interests, with
no backlash, I felt very singled out.
I understand the site needs to be moderated
but I felt like the tone was overly aggressive.

But it's over and done with. I just find it
disheartening to have been met with hostility
for a forum post whether it's post 1 or 1000.

The web is a tricky place for dialogue because
I can't imagine we would interact like this in person.
We both obviously like to discuss photography
but the intro seemed to go very wrong from both
sides.

As I said before, I enjoy dpi, respect your efforts,
and enjoy the site. Just wish the tone of your
comments was kinder.

Best Adam

I have to admit that I rarely read the rules. I think I've broken them on occasions myself. For the most part, I tend to follow my gut and allow the overwhelmingly good natured discussions that happen in this forum to be my guide when posting.

However, whenever I see a first post that's selling cell phones, porn, cameras, or directing me to another site/blog, I am immediately suspicious and assume that individual is attempting to take advantage.

Perhaps your intentions were pure. And maybe the response you received felt over the top. But you must admit that perhaps a simple "hello, my name is..." might have been more appropriate for a first post.

Adam,

I know just where you're coming from. Jack is really an asshole sometimes. Even though he appears to be a helpful and generous and supportive person, I'm sure that he regularly abuses members in private messages.

If he ever did that to me I'd whine about it too.

Steve
